  • Melbourne is the betting favorite to win the 2022 AFL Premiership.
  • Western Bulldogs and Brisbane are also among the bookmakers’ frontrunners.
  • The 2022 AFL season kicks off on Wednesday, March 16.

After nearly six months without any footy, the long wait is almost over. The 2022 AFL season kicks off on Wednesday, March 16, meaning we are now just a week away.

Melbourne crushed the Western Bulldogs in last season’s grand final. Naturally, the Demons are favored to defend their crown this year. But the bookmakers also view the Dogs, Brisbane, and Port Adelaide as genuine premiership contenders.

Since Round 1 is right around the corner, it’s time to discuss the opening odds for the 2022 AFL premiership season.

Western Bulldogs6.00
Port Adelaide9.50

Fresh from clinching their first flag since 1964, the Demons (4.33) head into the new campaign as the bookies’ favorites. Let’s not forget that Melbourne also secured the minor premiership last season.

After winning the premiership in 2016, the Bulldogs (6.00) finished as runners-up last year. Their consistency makes them very realistic challengers in 2022, alongside Brisbane (6.50).

Port Adelaide (9.50), the 2020 minor premier, is also in the mix. The Power finished second on the ladder last season after picking up the same number of home-and-away wins as Melbourne.

Geelong (10.00) and Richmond (10.00) are also expected to compete for the flag this year, along with Sydney (11.00). GWS (15.00) and Essendon (15.00) round out the top nine.

Can the Demons Defend Their Crown?

The Demons completed a memorable double last season, clinching their first minor premiership since 1964 before ending their 57-year premiership drought in style. Who could forget their 74-point thrashing of the Dogs in the grand final?

Although Christian Petracca picked up the Norm Smith Medal following a standout display in the showpiece, any number of players could have scooped the prize. Guys like Max Gawn, Clayton Oliver, and Bayley Fritsch starred throughout the campaign.

Melbourne’s exciting young team is stacked with talent in every department. Having dominated both the home-and-away season and finals series in 2021, it is no wonder the Dees are favored to go all the way once again this year.

Who Are Melbourne’s Main Challengers?

Understandably, the Western Bulldogs are viewed as Melbourne’s biggest threat. Not only have the Dogs reached two of the last six grand finals, but they have also finished inside the top seven in each of the previous three seasons.

The Brisbane Lions will be eager to go the distance this season. The Queenslanders sealed back-to-back second-place finishes in 2019 and 2020 before finishing fourth last year. Still, they haven’t reached the grand final since 2004.

Led by Ollie Wines, the 2021 Brownlow winner, Port Adelaide will also be confident of going all the way this year. You probably won’t be surprised to learn that Wines tops the 2022 Brownlow Medal odds.

Could an Outsider Win the 2022 AFL Premiership?

Priced at 11.00, Sydney is something of an outsider. However, the Swans have been one of the most consistent teams in recent years. They have reached three of the past ten grand finals, triumphing in 2012.

Outside the top nine, Carlton looks like a solid outside bet at 26.00. Not only do the Blues have Sam Walsh in their ranks, but they also have Harry McKay, who leads the betting favorites for the 2022 Coleman Medal.
