Early 2023 NFL Draft Odds Have CJ Stroud as #1 Pick

The 2022 NFL draft is officially in the books. It was a historically weak quarterback class, but that won’t be the case in 2023.

Early mock drafts have three or four quarterbacks in the top 15. Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud opens as the favorite to be the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL draft. We know he’ll have competition from a pair of Alabama players.

Who else is in contention to be the No. 1 pick? Here are the 2023 NFL draft odds.

2023 NFL Draft No. 1 Pick Odds

CJ Stroud+200
Bryce Young+250
Will Anderson+300
Paris Johnson+900
Jaxon Smith-Njigba+1600
Phil Jurkovec +1600
Tyler Van Dyke+1600
Spencer Rattler+1800

CJ Stroud and Bryce Young open as the top contenders to be the #1 pick in the 2023 NFL draft. We could see many NFL teams’ tanks for the quarterbacks.

Alabama linebacker Will Anderson is the best chance for a non-offensive player to be the number one NFL Draft pick for 2023‪. Anderson had an outstanding 2021 season and should lead Alabama to another CFP appearance.

Three more quarterbacks round out the list, including Spencer Rattler. At this time last season, Rattler was one of the favorites to be the No. 1 pick. He had a disappointing season, but he’ll aim to build his draft stock at South Carolina.

Why is Stroud the Favorite To Go No. 1 Overall?

CJ Stroud entered the 2021 season looking to replicate Justin Fields’ success with Ohio State. He had a tall task ahead of him, but Stroud was up for the challenge.

He passed for 484 yards and three touchdowns in his second career start against No. 12 Oregon. That was the start of a fantastic season. Stroud went on to clear 400 yards five times in 12 games.

Stroud annihilated Michigan State, going 32/35 with 432 yards and six touchdowns. I should note that 391 yards and all six touchdowns came in the first half. Somehow, that wasn’t his best performance of the season.

Check out what he did in the Rose Bowl.

  • 37/46
  • 573 yards
  • 6 touchdowns

Ohio State overcame an early 14-point deficit to win 48-45.

There may be some concerns surrounding Stroud after losing Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave, but he achieved those numbers without those players. Ohio State still has one of the best receiving cores in the country.

Stroud struggled early in the season with accuracy, but he made great strides. He is a pure pocket passer that can zip the ball into a tight window. Stroud isn’t as athletic as Bryce Young, but there isn’t a better passer in the 2023 NFL draft.

There’s a strong chance quarterback will be the first pick in the 2023 NFL draft. Stroud is likely at the top of teams’ early draft boards.

Will Alabama Have the No. 1 Pick?

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young and linebacker Will Anderson have the best chance to surpass CJ Stroud as the #1 pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

Young won the Heisman Trophy after passing for 4,872 yards, 47 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He had his best performance against Arkansas, passing for 559 yards and five touchdowns.

He isn’t a big running quarterback, but he has more athleticism than Stroud. That aspect could entice teams to select him over Stroud. The early 2022 Heisman Trophy odds have him as the favorite. Another great season could give him the edge in the 2023 NFL draft odds.

Anderson was an absolute force in his sophomore season with Alabama. Take a look at his numbers.

  • 101 tackles
  • 31 tackles for loss
  • 17.5 sacks
  • 3 passes defended

Quarterback is the most important position, so it’ll likely be the first pick in the 2023 NFL draft. However, I don’t think there’s a better player in the 2023 NFL draft than Anderson. I’m not sure if there’s a weakness in his game.

It’ll be interesting to see how the 2023 NFL draft odds change over the next year. We could see a surprise player at the top of the board in April 2023.
