World Series 2021 Odds Update Going into MLB Playoffs

| October 4, 2021 10:10 am PDT

There’s not a lot of better sports moments than playoff baseball, and here we are. It is good to be back to a full season after last year and this postseason is shaping up to be special.

We have new top contenders, sleeper teams, and more to bet on and it is going to be fun. If you want to take a look at the postseason bracket picture, you can do so here.

We also had updated World Series odds on your favorite betting websites, so make sure you place your bets while you still can!

Let’s take a look at which teams could be good bets in the 2021 MLB World Series.

Updated World Series Odds (Subject to Change)

Los Angeles Dodgers+375
Houston Astros+550
San Francisco Giants+550
Tampa Bay Rays+625
Chicago White Sox+750
Milwaukee Brewers+775
New York Yankees+1100
Atlanta Braves+1200
Louis Cardinals+1600

These odds are courtesy of BetOnline.

Coming into the postseason, the Los Angeles Dodgers have the top position on the odds charts. The Dodgers have held the top spot all year.

That gives the Giants, who come in at third, a bigger chip on their shoulder, as the Dodgers have been the favorites even though the Giants have been on top of the NL West for the majority of the year.

The Astros look to be the top powerhouse coming from the American League with the second shortest odds on the list. They have been incredibly offensively, and underrated defensively as well.

They will also probably break the internet if they win this year, considering their cheating scandal in the past couple years.

Top Contenders to Win in 2021

You may think the Dodgers look to be the pick here being the top team on the list, but I would caution against it.

They don’t offer the biggest upside odds-wise, and they also have to play a single Wild Card game against the St. Louis Cardinals, who have been on fire heading into the postseason.

They also look to be without Clayton Kershaw and Trevor Bauer still, which weakens their mighty pitching rotation that ranked best in the league in terms of ERA (2.94).

Houston Astros (+550)

I’m going to be honest here, I am not a huge fan of the Astros due to their cheating scandal and I don’t think they were punished enough.

That being said, they always say to bet with your head and not with your heart. Putting the cheating scandal behind us, this Astros team is more than good enough to win it all.

The 2017 World Series champions have a shot of winning it again in 2021, on the backs of their core.

George Springer went to Toronto, but Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, Alex Bregman, Michael Brantley, Kyle Tucker, Yordan Alvarez, and Yuli Gurriel are still in Houston, and they make for one of the most dangerous offenses in all of baseball.

They ranked best in the league in the following categories.

Batting Average wRC+ WAR K %
.266 115 32.8 (107.6 OFF) 19.5%

These main categories are crucial from an offensive standpoint, and the Astros were best in the league in all of them. That is the reason why they are one of the most, if not the most dangerous lineup of any postseason team in 2021.

Their collective ERA as a team ranks 7th in the league at a respectable 3.77, but their offense would be the reason why they could win the World Series this season.

San Francisco Giants (+550)

The Giants have been nothing short of incredible all season long. Like all the World Series winners, they seem to have a certain magic about them.

The Giants have that magic this season.

They are still underrated when it comes to the Dodgers being ranked above them. They have had a better season than the Dodgers and earned the top spot in the NL West and entire NL for that matter.

Their team is led by one of the most balanced lineups in all of baseball. They can hit the long ball, hit for average, hit righties and lefties, play defense, and pitch. They have the recipe for winning baseball, and they did it this season with an impressive record of 107-55.

Earning the first seed in the NL has given the Giants the winner of the Wild Card game. That means if the Dodgers win, they will have the ultimate NL West showdown and truly prove themselves against last year’s champs.

If the Cardinals win, they will be facing one of the hottest teams in baseball.

Just because they will be facing the Wild Card winner and in theory, the lowest seed in the NL bracket, does not mean it is going to be an easy series to win.

All the Giants have done all season is win. Everyone continues to doubt them, but they could make for a great World Series bet in 2021.

Tampa Bay Rays (+625)

You must give props to the Rays. They earned first place in one of the toughest divisions in all of baseball in the AL East, while having the 26th lowest payroll in the league.

They consistently find great value players and their farm system is churning out top tier players left and right. They have some of the best young talents in the league, highlighted by 20-year-old Wander Franco.

Like the Giants, the Rays can do many different things at a high level, which makes for a winning baseball team.

They have had one of the best bullpens in the league for a while now, and that didn’t change this year. Their bullpen ranks third in the league in ERA (3.24), but first in WAR (7.7)

The Rays have an incredible balance of lefties and righties in their lineup, which gives them an advantage over pitchers who can’t get both types of hitters out.

Typically, a righty pitcher does worse against lefties, and vice versa.

The Rays know exactly how to exploit that and it has allowed them to rank at the very top in the MLB in important categories.

  • wRC+ of 110 (second in MLB)
  • Runs Scored (857, first in MLB)
  • Baserunning WAR (13.2 second in MLB)

Their season long wRC+ is impressive, but since the trade deadline, it is even better. They rank as the best offense since August 1st with a wRC+ of 122, seven points higher than the next highest team (White Sox).

They also have a great defense on top of all of those categories. The Rays use analytics to win baseball games and it has worked out very well for them over the past couple years. They could prove the analytics to be the way of the future if they win the World Series.

Why the Yankees Could Be a Surprise

Now the Yankees could absolutely get eliminated in the Wild Card and ruin this completely, but they could also be a sneaky good option this year.

Out of all the updated World Series odds, I think the Yankees are the best sleeper team.

The reason why I think they could be a nice pick is because of the extremely profitable odds. They sit at +1100 going into the postseason, which means you could try and hedge your bets if they win a couple series.

Since the odds are so high, you can bet on the Yankees and wait until there are a couple of teams eliminated, and then place your bets on other teams in order to refund your bet if the Yankees ultimately lose.

The Yankees offense is a little inconsistent, but they have ranked 8th in wRC+ since the trade deadline.

The reason why the trade deadline is very significant for the Yankees is because of the acquisitions of Anthony Rizzo and Joey Gallo. Both of these big lefties balance out the big righty hitters, Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge.

If the opposing team does not have a top tier pitcher, the Yankees offense could put up big numbers.

Their toughest opponent before the World Series will likely be their second round one. The Rays earning the first seed means they play the winner of the Wild Card, which would be the Yankees in this case. The Rays have had their number recently, with a 22-11 record against the Yankees since 2020.

Now that doesn’t mean it is impossible and I am a big fan of the Rays this postseason, but the odds here are very profitable.

If they upset the Rays in the Divisional Round, you won’t be able to see their odds even close to what they are now.

Betting Tips for the 2021 World Series

The wait is finally over, postseason baseball is on for about a month.

It is important that you place your World Series bets as soon as possible, due to the changing of odds as the series goes on.

Once teams start getting eliminated, there will not be odds this good and it will be harder to make more money. This postseason should have a ton in store for us, considering that any team could win it all.

Make sure to keep an eye out for my post regarding the MLB postseason schedule as well!
