7 Winter Olympics Events Worth Betting on in 2022 – Bobsled, Curling, and More

| January 31, 2022 7:42 am PDT

The 2022 Winter Olympic Games get underway this Friday, February 4. Over the next fortnight, the greatest athletes on snow and ice will compete across 109 different events.

Those of you planning to bet on the Winter Olympics probably have a good idea about which events you want to target. But with so many sports and disciplines to choose from, finding the best events to bet on at Beijing 2022 is no easy task.

That’s exactly why I decided to compile a list of the top Winter Olympics events worth betting on in 2022. Let’s get the (snow)ball rolling!

Women’s Cross-Country Skiing

In total, there are 12 events spread over six cross-country skiing disciplines. With four distance disciplines (classical, skiathlon, freestyle, and relay) and two sprint disciplines (individual and team), there is no shortage of betting opportunities for this sport.

Naturally, the sheer volume of options makes cross-country skiing one of the best events to bet on at the Winter Olympics. But that is not the only reason.

While scouring the top-ranked Winter Olympics betting sites in search of wagers for Beijing 2022, one athlete in particular caught my eye. If the bookmakers’ odds for the women’s cross-country skiing are anything to go by, then Therese Johaug is destined for success in China.

The best Winter Olympics sportsbooks favor Johaug to win not one, not two, but THREE cross-country skiing events in China. That puts her among the most likely gold medal winners at Beijing 2022.

The Norwegian clinched a whopping four golds at the last FIS Nordic World Ski Championships – triumphing in the 10km freestyle, 15km skiathlon, 30km classical, and 4 x 5km relay. Pretty impressive, huh?

Johaug makes women’s cross-country skiing one of the top sports to bet on at Beijing 2022. If he lives up to expectations, she could make a lot of punters very happy.

Snowboarding – Men’s/Women’s Halfpipe

Why are the men’s and women’s halfpipe competitions among the best Winter Olympics events to bet on this year? Because you get to witness multiple world-class athletes going head-to-head with one another for the medals – that’s why!

In the men’s event, Shaun White will be competing in his fourth and final Games. Having won halfpipe gold at each of the previous three Winter Olympics, the 35-year-old will be desperate go out on a high note.

In the women’s event, Chloe Kim will be aiming to become the first-ever American woman to defend the Olympic halfpipe title. The Californian secured the gold medal at Pyeongchang 2018 when she was just 17.

If those two narratives aren’t enough to get your juices flowing, you should know that White isn’t favored to win gold in China. Japanese superstar Ayumu Hirano is the frontrunner, meaning the competition is destined to dish up a ton of drama.

Alpine Skiing – Men’s Super-G

From a betting perspective, the best thing about the men’s super-G (super giant slalom) at Beijing 2022 is the competitiveness of the event.

As the table below details, Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt and Norway’s Aleksander Aamodt Kilde are the bookmakers’ favorites to win gold. But when you assess the bigger picture, there is value everywhere you look.

MEN’S SUPER-G ODDS FOR BEIJING 2022
Athlete Gold Medal Odds Any Medal Odds
Marco Odermatt 2.20 1.30
Aleksander Aamodt Kilde 3.30 1.45
Matthias Mayer 8.00 3.00
Vincent Kriechmayr 10.00 3.50
Johan Clarey 17.00 5.00
Beat Feuz 19.00 5.00

First, minimum odds of 2.20 for a gold medal favorite in any event are very attractive. I mean, you will find dozens of events in which the favorite is priced at around 1.30 or under – making it difficult to generate a substantial profit.

It is also worth considering some of the outsiders in this event. For example, Austria’s Vincent Kriechmayr won both super-G and downhill title at last year’s FIS Alpine World Ski Championships – adding to his World Cup triumph in 2021.

In fact, when I put together my best bets for the 2022 Winter Olympics, I included Kriechmayr as one of my top picks for Beijing 2022.

Overall, there are 11 alpine skiing events across six disciplines. I’m not saying that you should ignore the combined, downhill, giant slalom, slalom, or team event, but the men’s super-G is definitely among the Winter Olympics events worth betting on in 2022.

Men’s Ice Hockey

The men’s ice hockey tournament is always one of the must-watch events at the Winter Games. The event first featured on the Olympic program all the way back in 1924 and has been a mainstay ever since.

It is no secret that Canada has completely dominated the event over the years. Indeed, the Canadian men’s team has won a whopping 16 ice hockey medals (9 gold, 4 silver, 3 bronze).

There was a time when NHL players were allowed to compete in the Winter Olympics. However, the league has banned its players from participating at Beijing 2022. While the absence of NHL players may disappoint some ice hockey fans, it does present better value for gamblers.

Before the announcement that NHL players will not travel to the Games, Canada was the out-and-out favorite to win the men’s ice hockey tournament, with the USA in second. Fast-forward to today – the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) is the bookies’ clear frontrunner.

The latest odds for the men’s ice hockey at Beijing 2022 have the ROC priced at around 2.30 to win gold. Finland (4.30) and Sweden (4.70) are favored to claim silver and bronze, respectively, with Canada (6.00) and the USA (11.00) much further down the pecking order.

The recent shake-up makes the men’s ice hockey one of the best events to bet on at Beijing 2022. Anything could happen when the teams take to the rink in China, meaning there is plenty of value to take advantage of.

Curling – Mixed Doubles

It wouldn’t be unfair to say that curling is not one of the most exhilarating and rip-roaring sports on the planet. Even the most die-hard curling fans will probably admit that there are many more compelling sports out there.

That said, one mixed doubles team has generated tons of interest in the lead-up to the Games. Alongside all the usual suspects like Canada, Great Britain, Norway, Sweden, and the United States, Australia has qualified for Beijing 2022.

No, not Austria – AUSTRALIA!

Despite boasting a land area of almost 3 million square miles, Australia doesn’t have a single professional curling rink. Yet, somehow, Tahli Gill and Dean Hewitt managed to qualify for the Games.

The Aussies’ inclusion in the mixed doubles curling automatically makes it one of the top events to bet on at the 2022 Winter Olympics. Sure, Gill and Hewitt are rank outsiders. But after coming this far, there is no reason why they can’t upset the odds again.

If you’re feeling lucky and looking for a fun longshot bet for Beijing 2022, look no further than Australia’s mixed doubles curling team. You don’t have to back them to win gold, of course. Simply backing them to get on to podium could land you a tasty profit.

The Aussies are not the only underdogs who could win a medal at the upcoming Games.

Bobsled – All Events

I could make up a bunch of random reasons why betting on the bobsled (or bobsleigh, depending on where you’re from) is a good idea. But I’m not going to.

That main reason why I recommend wagering on the Winter Olympics bobsled events is because it’s fun. Like, seriously fun. I mean, who doesn’t want to watch a sled full of humans hurtling down a narrow, winding ice track at 100mph?

If you don’t believe me, check out the highlights of the previous Games below.

This crazy sport has produced countless memorable moments over the years. Who could forget Jamaica’s iconic “Cool Runnings” team from 1988? They became unlikely Winter Olympics heroes when they crashed in Calgary before carrying their sled to the finish line.

Believe it or not, Jamaica has three bobsled teams heading to China this year. The four-man, two-man, and women’s monobob will all fancy their chances of upsetting the Winter Olympics odds.

Bobsledding has to be one of the most exiting sports to watch. So, why not make it even more exciting by betting on it?

Biathlon – Women’s 15km Individual

The women’s 15km individual biathlon event at Beijing 2022 is set to comprise more than 40 athletes. The sport combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting, just in case you’re wondering!

The three favorites to win the event – Elvira Oberg, Hanna Oberg, and Marte Olsbu Roiseland – are all priced at 7.00. At the opposite end of the spectrum, there are several outsiders priced as high as 301.00.

In my eyes, this is definitely one of the Winter Olympics events worth betting on in 2022. With a massive field of competitors and hugely generous odds, the chances of making a sizeable profit are pretty high.

Hanna Oberg won gold at Pyeongchang, so backing her to defend her crown is a smart move. It is also worth noting that both the silver and bronze medalists from the previous Games have retired, enabling more athletes to compete for a medal this time around.

I’m not saying that backing a 301.00 underdog is the right thing to do here. Still, the betting value on offer in this event is unrivalled. If you assess the field and research the athletes, you could win big.
