Will the Broncos Make the Playoffs in 2020?
Judging by how the Broncos finished the 2019 season, there’s a lot of hope brewing in Mile High. After several failed attempts at finding an adequate heir apparent for Peyton Manning, it appears that John Elway finally found himself a gem in Drew Lock.
The 23-year-old former Missouri QB didn’t knock anyone’s socks off once he got the chance, but a 4-1 record as a starter down the stretch has to count for something.
Elway has surrounded his second-year quarterback with a bunch of weapons, the offensive line was upgraded, and the defense got handed a gift on a silver platter thanks to a trade with the Tennessee Titans.
This organization is in a great spot to improve, but will the Broncos make the playoffs in 2020?
A case can be made for either side.
Denver Broncos Playoff Odds
For as much success as this franchise has sustained over the years, it has been a dry run in Denver over the last four years. Zero playoff appearances since winning Super Bowl 50 has a lot to do with the shortcomings under center, but the fact of the matter is this defense has fallen off substantially.
No longer an elite group, even their ability to get after the quarterback has taken hit. Case in point — 16 teams in the NFL surpassed 40 team sacks in 2019, and the Broncos weren’t one of them.
Bradley Chubb missed the final 12 games with a torn ACL, so there’s a bit of leeway there. However, Von Miller declined dramatically, and Derek Wolfe signed a deal with Baltimore. Throw in the fact that top corner Chris Harris Jr. bolted for the Chargers, and we could be looking at a very average defense in 2020.
Broncos Playoff Prediction and Pick
I’m torn here because I’m really excited about the offense in Denver. Not so much because they were able to lure Melvin Gordon from LA, although that helps, but because Drew Lock has everything in place to sincerely progress his game.
Lock’s arm strength is going to go a long way thanks to Jerry Jeudy joining Courtland Sutton on the outside, but don’t sleep on KJ Hamler being a stud from day 1. Given the slot WR’s attributes and what he can provide for Vic Fangio’s offense, I pegged Hamler as one of the six best picks in the 2020 NFL Draft.
All of this is exciting, but let’s pop back into the here and now and focus on what Denver is up against. A home opener against Tennessee will be far from a walk in the park, and expect the Broncos to be sizable underdogs when they travel to Pittsburgh in week 2 and host the Buccaneers in week 3.
A game at Gillette Stadium hangs in the balance, not to mention two contests versus the Chiefs are looming. While it may not be the hardest schedule league, quite a few roadblocks are standing in Denver’s way. A few too many to feel confident that the Broncos will make the playoffs.
Nonetheless, I don’t want to lay -200 that they miss the playoffs, either.
Perhaps attacking the Broncos’ win total is the best way to get in on the action.
