Who Should the Dallas Cowboys Draft First in 2020?

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the 2020 NFL Draft. It’s hard for that not to be the case when there are no active sports going on and it’s the only thing to talk about.

Once you start touching on a team as popular as the Dallas Cowboys, things really get crazy.

Dallas is a tough team to gauge, to be sure. Dak Prescott’s contract situation is something to monitor, while the Cowboys need to figure out a way to go from being 8-8 to contending for a title again.

One way to get better is the 2020 NFL Draft, and with a solid pick (17th overall), they actually have a good chance of drafting an impact player right away.

The question, of course, is who should the Dallas Cowboys draft first in the 2020 NFL Draft? I’m not here necessarily to hand out a Cowboys mock draft but rather to look at the most realistic options and offer my opinion as to who I think they should take.

Dallas Cowboys Biggest Draft Needs

  • EDGE
  • Safety
  • Cornerback

Dallas has some nice talent on defense, but they do have some problem areas. The team has had problems at safety for basically two decades, while losing star cornerback Byron Jones in free agency has to hurt.

The Cowboys also could look to improve their pass rush, as they don’t have a lot outside of DeMarcus Lawrence. The team could also try to bring in depth at wide receiver and target a tight end upgrade, but the defense is surely where they’ll focus most of their energy early in this draft.

K’Lavon Chaisson, EDGE, LSU

This is probably the player most frequently mocked to the Cowboys, and for good reason. Not only is the LSU stud pass rusher a great athlete, but he has the tools to be a force at the next level.

Dallas could use such a prospect, as they were just average in that department in 2019. After revamping the interior of their defensive line in free agency, they could land Chaisson as a long-term running mate across from DeMarcus Lawrence.

Grant Delpit, S, LSU

You can also look at Alabama safety Xavier McKinney here (specifically if you’re here for advice on props for your 2020 NFL Draft betting), but I like Delpit’s upside more.

Tackling issues are dropping Delpit’s stock, but he’s a great athlete that plays with strong instincts and delivers big hits. He’s fairly well-rounded and would address a safety issue Dallas has been slapping band-aids on for years.

CJ Henderson, CB, Florida

Dallas is pretty set on offense, so one more spot to look at besides their pass rush and safety could be a cover man. The Cowboys did bring in some corners in free agency, but losing a star like Byron Jones has to sting.

Landing more of a long-term solution that has upside like Henderson could make sense. Trevon Diggs and perhaps Christian Fulton are also in the mix at 17th overall, but Henderson’s combination of size, speed, and range might make him the #2 corner in this draft.

Who Will the Cowboys Draft First?

You can argue for any of the players or positions touched on above, while there are some Dallas Cowboys mocks out there that have them splurging at wide receiver.

Dallas seems pretty set offensively, so if you’re betting on who the Cowboys will pick first, I’d stay on the defensive side of things. They definitely need help at corner and safety when you look at the big picture, but for 2020, it’s not like they didn’t address those issues

Their pass rush could use a bit more juice, though. Bringing in a potential freak like Chaisson could greatly enhance that unit in 2020, while also possibly making their pass rush one to be feared for years to come.
