Which Teams Will Come Out of the NBA 2020 Draft as the Biggest Winners?

Who Will Be the Biggest Winners in the 2020 NBA Draft

The 2020 NBA Draft is almost here, and the internet is full of mock drafts, trade rumors, scouting reports, and all sorts of information about the big night. That’s to be expected just before the next generation of great basketball players enters the strongest league in the world.

Most experts believe that this draft class is relatively weak, but it will take time before we know for sure. We’ve seen many supposedly mediocre players redefine the expectations before, and others have failed to reach their exceptional potential.

You never know what’s going to happen and which teams will come out ahead. And yet, I have some predictions on who will be the biggest winners in the 2020 NBA Draft.

My thoughts here are based on my intuition, the draft order this year, the teams’ needs, and their history when it comes to selecting young talent in the past.

There’s a big chance for some of this to age like milk, so I’m taking a big risk here! With that in mind, let’s dive into it.

San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs didn’t qualify for the NBA playoffs last season, and many labeled this as a disaster. It’s hard to argue with that, but there is one silver lining that must be mentioned. The franchise will have its highest draft pick since getting Tim Duncan in 1997.

The Spurs never had the chance to select a young player as early as eleventh. The organization has one of the best development programs in the entire NBA and some of the most exceptional scouts out there.

The team has been able to find undrafted gems or turn second-round prospects into respectable NBA players consistently. Just imagine what could happen with a guy that’s close to the top talents from the upcoming draft class.

On top of that, we’ve seen many late lottery teams get excellent players in recent years. The following athletes have been selected 11th or later in the past 6 years: Zach LaVine, T. J. Warren, Devin Booker, Domantas Sabonis, Donovan Mitchell, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Bam Adebayo, Michael Porter Jr., and Tyler Herro.

All things considered, I feel pretty confident that the Spurs could make the best out of their 11th pick, and we might look at the guy they select as one of the potential steals of the 2020 draft class.

I’m not sure if we could expect much from the 41st pick that also belongs to the Spurs, but I wouldn’t underestimate the organization’s ability to find a useful player with this one either.

Golden State Warriors

When a franchise that managed to build a dynasty through the draft has the second pick, you always have to pay attention. The Golden State Warriors had multiple big hits over the past 12 years, and similarly to the San Antonio Spurs, they can develop players well.

The organization’s whole culture is built around that, and I’m sure that the Warriors can select the right guy. And that’s only one of the scenarios in which they will end up as one of the biggest winners of the 2020 NBA Draft!

There’s a genuine possibility of a trade that could strengthen the Warriors right now instead. Remember, this is a team that already has Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Andrew Wiggins.

Trading down in exchange for more players that could improve the roster instantly is certainly an option, as Noah Davis mentions in his burning questions for the 2020 NBA Draft.

The Warriors could easily build a nice package that could land them a player like Jrue Holiday, Victor Oladipo, or Buddy Hield. The other option would be to add depth to the team by acquiring several useful role players.

The point is that I trust the Warriors’ front office to make the best out of the second pick. On top of that, the franchise has two more selections in the second round. It can use them to find some prospects for the future or juice up a potential trade.

Charlotte Hornets

Some might be surprised by my selection of the Charlotte Hornets, but hear me out. The team has the third pick on November 18, and there are exactly three players in the NBA 2020 draft class that look like a good fit.

LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards could develop into franchise players and have enormous potential. Even if they are both drafted by the time it’s Charlotte’s turn, the team still can get James Wiseman.

He’s a phenomenal big man with an insane ceiling on both ends of the floor. The center is already an elite rim protector, and his offensive game is surprisingly versatile for his size. Wiseman could turn out to be a generational talent that could elevate the organization.

As it stands, it would be tough for the Charlotte Hornets to make a mistake. If you add the two second-round picks of the team, I certainly see them as some of the winners in 2020.

Boston Celtics

This one is based purely on numbers and history. The Boston Celtics don’t have a high draft pick, but they have the last selection in the lottery, another two first-round picks, and a second-round pick.

When a team with one of the best GMs in the league has so many assets, it’s only natural to expect a strong draft. The Celtics could easily make some trades to go up and there are reports they want the Hawks’ sixth pick already.

The other option is to exchange the picks for some role players for this season or use them to acquire talent that could secure the organization’s future.

I must admit I don’t have a crystal clear idea of what the Celtics intend to do in the 2020 NBA Draft, but my gut feeling is that the team will be much stronger when it’s all said and done.
