Ulsan Hyundai vs. Sangju Sangmu K-League 1

Ulsan failed to topple Jeonbuk as K-League 1 champions last year by a single goal on the last day of the season, so the Horangi will be keen to get off to the best possible start this year.

The much-changed army team is the opponent on matchday one, so it is not the easiest start to the campaign for one of South Korea’s biggest clubs.

Read on for the odds and my Ulsan Hyundai vs. Sangju Sangmu prediction.

Ulsan Hyundai vs. Sangju Sangmu Odds

Ulsan Hyundai to Win-173
The Draw+336
Sangju Sangmu to Win+440

Bookmaker BetOnline seems fairly confident that Ulsan will get off to a winning start this year, and I’m inclined to agree after the way it played last season and the level of talent it has brought in during the offseason. Due to South Korea’s military service laws, the Sangju Sangmu squad has changed greatly from last season, but there are some very good players for manager Kim Tae-hwan to choose from.

Match Preview

Hopefully, the Ulsan Hyundai players have used the extended offseason to get over the heartbreak of losing out on the title to Jeonbuk in such dramatic fashion. This is a club that should definitely challenge for honors again this year and should be able to pick up three points from this opening fixture.

Losing Kim Bo-kyung to its main rivals is a massive blow, due to his creative ability, but Norwegian striker Bjorn Johnsen could make a real impact on the K-League this year. There have also been some great signings to bolster the defensive line. Ulsan looks like it is ready to go again this year.

Sangju Sangmu’s players, on the other hand, go into this season in the strange position of knowing that their club will definitely be relegated. That’s because it is relocating for the 2021 campaign and will be starting off in K-League 2. Hopefully, that won’t affect the commitment shown by an interesting-looking squad.

There has been a massive turnaround in players, once again, so how the army team does this year will really be down to how quickly the manager can get them all playing as one team. Last season’s seventh-place finish might be hard to beat, but we will know more after this first game of the year.

Ulsan Hyundai vs. Sangju Sangmu Pick

  • Ulsan Hyundai to Win

Ulsan went undefeated in the three games between these two last season and will expect to keep that form going into this season. With Jeonbuk winning the title last year while losing just three games, the Horangi will know that it cannot afford to slip up, especially at home and at the start of the campaign. This should finish in a fairly comfortable home win.
