Top Sleeper Picks for the 2020 CMA Awards

2020 CMA Sleepers

The 2020 Country Music Association Awards are finally here this week, with the top artists in country music set to be honored.

There is a lot to get excited about for this year’s CMAs. Miranda Lambert leads the way with the most nominations, Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker host, and Charley Pride is being honored with the 2020 Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award.

On top of all of that, you can bet on this event before it goes live. If you plan on doing so, I have two suggestions. First, to check out my 2020 CMAs betting guide, and also to consider going against the grain a bit with your bets.

There will certainly be categories where you want to ride the favorites – particularly the nicely priced ones – but there may be room for some 2020 CMAs sleepers.

If you’re down for a little value – and some risk – join me as I break down the best Country Music Association Awards sleeper picks for 2020.

Eric Church to Win Entertainer of the Year

The 2020 Entertainer of the Year is admittedly up for grabs. It’s been a male-dominated award for some time now, as living legend Garth Brooks won in 2019, and has secured the hardware three times out of the last four years.

He bowed out due to controversy, though, so at least we know the title will change hands in 2020.

Brooks is just one of many men to take home the Entertainer of the Year award recently, too. Keith Urban won in 2018, and Luke Bryan has two wins dating back to 2014.

In fact, Taylor Swift is the last female country singer to win this award, and she did that back in 2011. You could obviously chase the value with Miranda Lambert here, and Carrie Underwood is among the favorites to win the 2020 Entertainer of the Year.

However, men keep winning this one for some reason, so if you want a CMAs sleeper to target, look no further than Eric Church. He’s been nominated thrice before, after all, so it could be his time to shine.

Carrie Underwood to Win Female Vocalist of the Year

Kasey Musgraves is back to defend her title, as she’s in the running to win the 2020 CMAs Female Vocalist of the Year after winning in 2019.

I don’t know how likely she is to win, of course, as repeat winner Miranda Lambert looks like the favorite. Lambert has seven wins under her belt, and she’s done nothing but wreck the country music industry over the past year, so she’d make total sense as the victor here.

You also have to consider Maren Morris, who is another superstar in country music that could take what is rightfully hers. Morris has one of the biggest hits of the year with “Bones” and has yet to be handed such an honor in her career.

She also won a similar award at the 2020 ACM awards, so if that holds up, she does make sense as one of the top favorites.

But could there be value in going with someone like Carrie Underwood?

It’s wild that Underwood could be a potential CMAs sleeper, but here we are. Lambert and Morris will be very tough singers to get past, but Underwood is in the running for numerous awards, and has won this exact one five times before.

Could Underwood kick Lambert and Morris to the side and return value for willing bettors? It’s not impossible. Underwood already locked up Entertainer of the Year at the ACM awards, and was in the mix for this award there, too.

It’s possible things get rotated a bit. If so, Underwood feels like a sneaky pick here.

Eric Church to Win Male Vocalist of the Year

Luke Combs is the logical favorite here, as his big hit “Forever After All” has dominated the charts, and puts him in position to win.

That wouldn’t shock anyone, either, as he’s really just keeping things going after a big win for this same award in 2019.

Looking at the 2020 ACM awards, you can start aligning the stars on your own when you note that Combs won there, too.

While Combs would be among the best 2020 CMAs bets, he won’t come at a great price. That should leave bettors thinking outside the box, and that’s a good reason why you’re here, reading about Country Music Association Awards sleepers.

Combs is the top pick, but it feels funny potentially getting Eric Church at a value (again).

Chris Stapleton has won four times before and could also be a fun singer to target at a discount, but Church is just as deserving, has been passed over the last six times he’s been nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year, and he’s slated to be a nice betting value.

Luke Combs to Win Song of the Year

There’s probably no way around the top two contenders for the 2020 CMAs Song of the Year, which are going to be Miranda Lambert’s “Bluebird” and Maren Morris’s “Bones”.

This is a heavyweight title bout here, and I highly doubt a winner beyond these two emerges this year.

That said, there’s no fun in only betting on the favorites, and big events like these always give way to surprises. Could a sleeper pick pop up that’s worth your while for Song of the Year? I think so, if only due to sheer volume.

Luke Combs is the sneaky play here. It’s up to you how to place that bet, though. Combs has two songs up for this award, with “Even Though I’m Leaving” and “I Hope You’re Happy Now” giving him a shot.

I wouldn’t necessarily list these two as his best songs, but when a singer this talented and this popular has two dogs in the race, bettors need to consider taking a shot.

Miranda Lambert to Win Album of the Year

Luke Combs’ name is littered all over my 2020 CMAs sleepers, but it isn’t because he’s an amazing value bet. It’s because he’s amazing in general, and he has a real shot at winning a lot of awards this year.

Combs won this same award at the 2020 ACM awards, so it’d only make sense.

He’s the likely favorite for this one, too, as he’s just had so many fantastic songs pop in 2020, and I don’t know if the competition beneath him is all that scary.

Of course, he’s not alone.

If you’re looking for a top contender, it has to be Miranda Lambert. She had “Bluebird” as the driving force behind a beautifully woven album in Wildcard, and it is a rather complete collection, from top to bottom.

There aren’t any 2020 CMAs odds out, so it’s possible she doesn’t fit true CMAs sleepers criteria. She should at least be available at a nice price, though, and she’s really the only other bet I’d be willing to make here.

There’s no getting around the obvious; this is going to be a really fun show, and a lot of these big names deserve the recognition they’ll be getting.

That, and it could be a blast betting on the Country Music Association Awards if any of these 2020 CMAs sleepers actually end up winning.

I wouldn’t bet strictly on sleepers, but it probably only takes one look at this year’s Emmy Awards to realize that things don’t always go quite as planned. There were more than a couple of upsets, and had you been on the right ones, you could have made bank.

The hope and the upside are certainly there. Just make sure you use the top entertainment betting sites if you do plan on targeting any value bets at the 2020 CMAs.
