Top DFS Picks for the 2021 Waste Management Phoenix Open With My Recommended Lineup

This is a fun week to make lineups in fantasy golf. From Rahm and Xander to JT and Rory, there are some serious heavy hitters at the top of the price sheet. However, the importance of differentiating your lineups in GPPs on DraftKings is immense.
You can still ride a few of the chalky plays but perhaps think about leaving a little salary on the table.
Check out my top DFS picks for the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and you’ll see exactly what I mean.
Webb Simpson – $10,100
Webb Simpson was due for a breakthrough performance in this event. That’s exactly what happened in 2020 when Webby birdied the final two holes in regulation and the first hole in the playoff to outlast Tony Finau.
Simpson’s now got a win, a runner-up, and three other top-10s during his last eight trips to Scottsdale. The world’s 9th-ranked player has made 12 straight cuts – 10 of which he’s landed 17th or better, thanks to getting it done in a variety of ways.
Daniel Berger – $9,600
Among my recommended Waste Management Phoenix Open DFS picks, Daniel Berger is the guy not to leave off your roster. Top 10s in each of his two starts in 2021 (Sentry TOC, Sony Open), Berger has been knocking on the door in Phoenix ever since he made his debut here in 2015.
To be more specific, “db_straitvibin” has tallied three tops 10s and an 11th-place finish at WMPO. The difference is now he’s a bonafide stud and a top-15 player in the world.

Billy Horschel – $8,400
Since 2015, Billy Horschel is a perfect 6-6 in Scottsdale with three top-25s. This includes registering a T9 last year after opening with 63-68 and playing in the final group on Saturday. The 5-time PGA Tour winner capped off 2020 by finishing 5th in Mayakoba, and a T7 at the Sony Open reaffirms his solid form.
While some will be hung up on the fact that Bill missed the cut last week at Torrey Pines, I say don’t let it slow you down. Horschel had a tough round Thursday but bounced back nicely with a bogey-free 69 on Friday.
Sam Burns – $7,700
Let me get this straight. Sam Burns cost $8,300 last week and played in the final group on Sunday, yet the oddsmakers on DK slashed his price tag to $7,700?
Sign me up as someone who endorses Burns as one of the best DFS picks for the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Sam struggled Sunday in San Diego, slipping back into a tie for 18th, but there’s no question this dude is trending toward being one of golf’s breakout stars in 2021.
Sam Burns – By the Numbers | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Season | Scoring Avg. | SG: Off-the-Tee | GIR | SG: Tee-to-Green | % of Cuts Made |
2019/20 | 70.78 | 16th | 98th | 122nd | 57.9% |
2020/21 | 70.28 | 3rd | 6th | 15th | 71.4% |
Michael Thompson – $7,200
I bragged about Michael Thompson when I was showcasing Phoenix Open sleepers. Lurking at just $7,200 on DraftKings, I feel obligated to tout him in fantasy golf as well.
With ideal weather forecasted this week at the WMPO, a putting contest could break out. In that case, give me all the exposure I can get to a dude who has made a living by pouring them in from mid-range (ranked 9th in conversion % from 15-20’).

The best part about rostering Thompson is his dependability as of late. Four consecutive top-25s, not to mention he’s shot 14-under-par or better in all three of his appearances in 2021.
Doc Redman – $6,600
Coming off a missed cut at the Farmers Insurance Open and nothing better than a T61 among his last four starts, Doc Redman’s ownership should be severely depressed. However, his boom or bust mentality makes him the perfect guy to plugin as one of your WMPO DFS picks.
Remember, Doc has logged four top-4s on the PGA Tour, and he actually hit the ball pretty well last week at Torrey. He just couldn’t get anything going with the putter and wound up making 30 pars (3 birdies, 3 bogeys), ultimately missing the cut by one.
The good news – both of Doc’s top-4 finishes in the fall came directly after missing the cut.

Final leaderboard…?
My 2021 Waste Management Phoenix Open DFS Lineup for GPPs
- Webb Simpson $10,100
- Daniel Berger $9,600
- Billy Horschel $8,400
- Sam Burns $7,700
- Michael Thompson $7,200
- Doc Redman $6,600
Of course, I like Jon Rahm and Xander Schauffele this week, and I fully expect JT and Rory to both be in contention. Unfortunately, anything short of those guys winning the golf tournament, and we’re back to square one – looking for value elsewhere.
That’s where these Waste Management Phoenix Open DFS picks come in. Webb Simpson and Daniel Berger have tremendous course history and can be relied on as anchors to your lineup.
Billy Horschel and Michael Thompson are each playing great golf, while Sam Burns and Doc Redman give you a couple of high-upside plays.
