Top Boxing Matches in May 2022 – 9 Fights You Can Place Bets On

| April 29, 2022 12:17 pm PDT
Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez to left, Dmitry Bivol and Gervonta Davis to right

What boxing matches in May 2022 are you most looking forward to?

For me, it must be Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol. That should be an incredible spectacle, and worth putting a few dollars down on. On the flipside, Floyd Mayweather’s exhibition fight with Don Moore will probably be about as exciting as low-fat porridge. Wagering on it? Well, that’s a different story.

There are some super-interesting matches set to grace our screens this month. But like the Mayweather fight, some that might stink but could make you some money.

With the likes of Gervonta Davis, Jermell Charlo, and Demetrius Andrade appearing this month, you won’t be short of big-name talent to watch and wager on.

I’ve handpicked the top 9 boxing matches in May 2022 that you can place bets on. Let’s start with the first of the month!

Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol

Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol
  • Date: Saturday, May 7th
  • Venue: T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas
  • Broadcaster: DAZN PPV

There are tons of things to do on Cinco de Mayo that go right through to the first weekend of May.

For me, nothing will top tuning in for Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol. Whether you are buying the scrap on TV or streaming the Canelo vs. Bivol fight online, do whatever you must. Providing it is legal, of course. What you don’t want to do is miss what is one of the best boxing matches in May 2022 that you can bet on.

Even if you’re not sure about placing bets on the Canelo vs. Bivol fight, this is arguably the biggest fight of the year. The Mexican is the pound-for-pound number one on the planet and is in search of yet another title to add to his burgeoning collection of belts.

Bivol is tasked with stopping the “Cinnamon” juggernaut. Undefeated in 19 fights, the WBA (Super) light heavyweight champion will be looking to hand the undisputed super-middleweight king the first (official) loss of his career since Mayweather beat him by decision in 2013. Can he get the job done?

Of all the top May 2022 boxing matches you can bet on, this must be the most attractive of them all. Feel free to check out my betting guide for Canelo vs. Bivol for advice on picking the right odds and bets.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol Betting Guide with Odds and Picks

It’s time to discuss betting on Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol. The big one, billed Legacy is Earned, goes down at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on May 7th. This Cinco de Mayo weekend spectacular is just about the most talked-about fight in boxing...

Floyd Mayweather vs. Don Moore

Floyd Mayweather vs. Don Moore
  • Date: Saturday, May 14th
  • Venue: Burj Al Arab Helipad, Dubai
  • Broadcaster: LIVENow PPV

The odds for Floyd Mayweather vs. Don Moore are available on the best boxing betting sites.

If you are one of the countless bettors who have won money on “Money” over the years, that might be music to your ears. Although this is a bit of a strange one, the fact that you can gamble on Mayweather means it makes my list of the top boxing matches to bet on in May 2022.

Again, I’m not sure it’s going to be the most exciting fight of all time. In fact, I would place bets on Mayweather vs. Moore being a snooze fest. Even if it is being staged on top of the world-famous Burj Al Arab hotel — with just twenty tickets on sale for around $187,000 a pop — it’s still a Mayweather exhibition.

Although Floyd Mayweather’s odds for the Don Moore fight suggest that he will win, there will be other wagers to target.

Given the crazy surroundings and the nature of the event, you will find tons of proposition bets for the Mayweather match. That should make what is unlikely to be among the best boxing matches in May 2022 a little more exciting.

I mean, it’s certainly something to consider. I’m not sure if you will be too stoked about paying $14.99 to watch the aging great slipping shots for 30 mins. That’s not a bad price for a Mayweather fight in all fairness. Especially with Badou Jack and Anderson Silva also fighting on the card.

Who knows, maybe this could end up being one of the best boxing matches in May 2022?  Hmmm. I doubt it. But one of May’s best boxing matches to bet on? That seems more likely.

Jermell Charlo vs. Brian Castano 2

Jermell Charlo vs. Brian Castano
  • Date: Saturday, May 14th
  • Venue: Dignity Health Sports Park, California
  • Broadcaster: SHOWTIME

Following a split draw in their first fight back in July 2021, Charlo and Castano will run it back.

One of the very best boxing matches to watch in May 2022, it’s also got that double appeal of being one of the top boxing matches to bet on this month. Both guys are looking to unify the division and will be desperate to get one over on the other.

It’s quite an interesting scenario we have with these two. It’s almost certain that a trilogy bout will happen, despite who wins. The only things stopping that from happening would be either a brutal beatdown on one side or someone sneaking past the other and refusing to engage in fight number three.

The WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, and The Ring light middleweight champ is looking to unify the 154-pound division. The last man to do so was Winky Wright, but it has never been accomplished in the four-belt era.

Charlo comes into this one with a record of 34-1. The only loss on his record came against Tony Harrison in December 2018.

Suffice to say, the last piece of the puzzle for the American is Castano’s WBO strap. But if the Argentine wins on May 14, he will make history. With a record of 17-0-2, “Ray Sugar” is hoping to join the likes of Carlos Monzon, Niccolino Locche, and Pasqual Perez in being remembered as a great fighting man from his homeland.

Becoming the first man to unify all belts at 154 would help him move closer to that dream. He has a lot of work to do before he could ever be considered even close to those aforementioned warriors. But this May, a new Argentinian boxing icon could very well be made.

Kubrat Pulev vs. Andrey Fedosov

Kubrat Pulev vs. Andrey Fedosov
  • Date: Saturday, May 14th
  • Venue: Forum, California
  • Broadcaster: Fite.tv PPV US

Bulgaria’s Pulev returns to professional boxing for the first time since being knocked out by Anthony Joshua in December 2020.

The former heavyweight title challenger squares off with Andrey Fedosov in a ten-round bout at the Forum in California. This is also the first time we have seen anything of Pulev this year, who fights in the co-main slot at the TrillerVerse 5 event. Hip-hop legends Cyprus Hill and Onyx will also be performing on the night.

Please Note

The last appearance Pulev made in a fighting capacity resulted in a first-round knockout of former UFC heavyweight champion, Frank Mir, back in November 2021. The 40-year-old stopped Mir at the inaugural Triad Combat event in Texas.

Although Fedesov should present a much tougher test than Mir, he is not exactly on par with the only men to have beaten Pulev in the squared circle. Before his KO loss to Joshua, Wladimir Klitschko’s stoppage win over “The Cobra” was the last time he tasted defeat.

Fedesov comes into this fight with a record of 32-3 and is on a seven-fight win streak. However, his caliber of opponents has not been all that great. Still, I think it should be a good scrap. Thus, why Pulev vs. Fedesov makes it onto my list of the best boxing matches in May 2022 to bet on.

Oh, and did I mention his brother is also appearing on this card?
  • Sergey Kovalev vs. Tervel Pulev
  • Kubrat Pulev vs. Andrey Fedosov
  • Evan Holyfield vs. Maurice Williams
  • Amado Vargas vs. Anel Dudo
  • Emiliano Vargas vs. Cmaje Ramseur

Legendary boxers Evander Holyfield and Fernando Vargas will be watching their sons — in Vargas’ case two of them — on the night.

Emiliano Vargas will be making his professional debut before this next one.

Sergey Kovalev vs. Tervel Pulev

Sergey Kovalev vs. Tervel Pulev
  • Date: Saturday, May 14th
  • Venue: Forum, California
  • Broadcaster: Fite.tv PPV US

Sergey Kovalev is back in action in what should be one of the best boxing matches to bet on in May 2022.

The fight serves as the main event for Pulev-Fedesov on May 14. And although Kovalev is a good few years past his best, it should be a pretty entertaining match. WBA International cruiserweight champion, Pulev, will not be a walkover.

Kovalev has been inactive for some time now. In fact, he hasn’t competed since being stopped by Canelo Alvarez in November 2019. That’s just six months shy of three years for the “Krusher,” who once reigned supreme over the light heavyweight division.

Famous for his victories over Bernard Hopkins, Jean-Pascal, and Eleider Alvarez, the Russian came close to becoming the first man to beat the great Andre Ward back in November 2016. Despite dropping the “Son of God,” Ward’s late rally earned him a unanimous decision. In highly controversial circumstances, I might add. A second fight saw Ward stop the former champ.

Olympic gold medalist, Pulev, last competed against Vikapita Meroro in  July 2021. He won that fight by knockout to advance his professional record to 16-0 with 13 KOs.

A win over Kovalev would represent the most significant victory of the 39-year-old’s career, and he could be in for just that.

Joshua Buatsi vs. Craig Richards

Joshua Buatsi vs. Craig Richards
  • Date: Saturday, May 21st
  • Venue: The O2 Arena, London
  • Broadcaster: DAZN PPV

Joshua Buatsi squares off with former title challenger Craig Richards at The O2 London on Saturday, May 21.

This light heavyweight contest makes my list of boxing’s top fights in May 2022 to bet on, and it should be a decent watch. Both native Londoners, Buatsi and Richards will go toe-to-toe in front of a packed crowd in the southeast of the city, and you can watch it on DAZN.

Buatsi improved to 15-0 with his tenth straight stoppage win in August 2021. The Englishman knocked out Ricards Bolotniks in a WBA light heavyweight world title eliminator and was set to test himself against Maxim Vlasov in December before suffering an injury. Buatsi claims that this fight, however, should get pulses racing.

“Two London boys coming together, it’s going to be a huge night. The Light-Heavyweight scene in this country is thriving and I’m glad that we can get one of the biggest fights made. The crowd is going to be in for a treat.

“I am coming to win and nothing else; I am sure Richards is doing the same. He had a close fight with Bivol so will want to make things straight, but I have other plans. Win well and then push onto the World Title by any means necessary.”

Richards is coming off a career-best performance against WBA titlist Dmitry Bivol in May 2021. Although “Spider” failed to win that night, he got a lot of respect for his efforts. Should Bivol beat Canelo Alvarez, that’s going to bode well for his prospects.

While that might be the case, he will only be focusing on what is ahead of him. One of the best boxing matches you can bet on in May 2022, Buatsi vs. Richards should be a great tear up in one of the world’s most revered boxing cities.

Demetrius Andrade vs. Zach Parker

Demetrius Andrade vs. Zach Parker
  • Date: Saturday, May 21st
  • Venue: Pride Park Stadium – Derby, England
  • Broadcaster: TBC

Andrade’s next fight is, well, underwhelming.

Despite “Boo Boo” calling out the big names in the middleweight division, the caliber of his opponents continues to disappoint. Now, while Parker might not be a Golovkin, Benavidez, Charlo, Canelo — or any of the other champs that Andrade has called out in recent times — the WBO International super-middleweight champ is 20-0 and looks a solid boy.

Andrade has put together five defenses of his WBO middleweight crown since beating Walter Kautondokwa to win the vacant strap. But if anyone was expecting him to be ambitious in adding to his collection, well, those wins aren’t exactly a glowing reference to his intentions.

Opponent Result Method Round Date
Jason Quigley Win TKO Round 2 Nov 19th, 2021
Liam Williams Win UD Points Apr 17th, 2021
Luke Keeler Win TKO Round 9 Jan 30th, 2020
Maciej Sulęcki Win UD Points Jun 29th, 2019
Artur Akavov Win TKO Round 12 Jan 18th, 2019

If it sounds like I’m crapping on Andrade, it’s because I kind of…am.

That’s not because I despise the guy or anything like that. I guess I’m just a little frustrated at seeing yet another world champion refusing to fight the best out there. Parker is not, at least not yet, at that level. But could he upset Andrade?

There must be reasons why Andrade vs. Parker has made it on my list of May 2022’s top boxing matches to bet on. And there are.

This fight will be competitive for the first nine or ten rounds, with Andrade doing what he does best. Predictability is a great trait for boxing bettors to use to their advantage. And the American’s style is just that.

David Benavidez vs. David Lemieux

David Benavidez vs. David Lemieux
  • Date: Saturday, May 21st
  • Venue: TBC
  • Broadcaster: TBC

One of the best boxing matches of May 2022, I’m looking forward to this one.

Among the rising stars of boxing, Benavidez is backing himself to rule the 168-pound division. He will take one step closer to accomplishing that goal when he goes toe-to-toe with former IBF middleweight king, Lemiuez, on May 21.

The details of the fight have yet to be finalized, with a venue still not nailed down. Regardless, it’s difficult not to get stoked for this one. Lemieux is a warrior and will be game to attempt to derail the freight train that is Benavidez.

Now at 43-4, the Canadian has seen better days but he is a fighter to underestimate at your peril. Benavidez, who won the WBC super-middleweight title by stopping Anthony Dirrell in 2019, is unlikely to make such a grave error.

I rank this one among the top boxing matches to bet on in May 2022 as well as a fight that should deliver in terms of quality. It should be a good old classic tear-up, so make sure to put a big, red circle around this in May’s boxing calendar.

Gervonta Davis vs. Rolly Romero

Gervonta Davis vs. Rolly Romero
  • Date: Saturday, May 28th
  • Venue: Barclays Center, New York
  • Broadcaster: SHOWTIME PPV

Finally, Davis vs. Romero makes my list of the best boxing matches in May 2022 you can bet on.

Davis puts his WBA (Regular) lightweight title on against Rolly Romero at the Barclays Center on May 28. The man known to fans as “Tank” is looking for the 27th straight win of his career. The protege of Floyd Mayweather Jr. is coming over a less than impressive win over Isaac Cruz and will be looking to do much better this time around.

Romero enters the fight with a record of 14-0 and 12 KOs.

This is a huge opportunity for the 26-year-old native of Las Vegas to show what he is made of. Not everyone is impressed with Davis fighting Romero, which should give you some indication of the perceived gulf in class here.

With that being said, I still think this could be an interesting bout. As far as the best fights in boxing to bet in May 2022, I have no problem adding this one to the list. If you’re indeed looking to place bets on the fights this month, here’s a little bit of advice before I close the curtains on this piece.

How to Choose the Top Boxing Bets in May 2022

Floyd Mayweather

I’ve covered the best boxing matches in May 2022 to bet on. But of course, our views could conflict.

While I don’t think there is anyone out there who would dispute that at least most of the fights above are the best of the bunch, we’re all entitled to our opinions. That is if you have something substantial to counter with.

In other words, name me some better boxing fights to bet on this month. Without knowing what boxing matches are happening in May 2022, then your opinion is not valid. I’m not looking to argue here. Instead, I’m illustrating a point.

Here’s some free boxing betting advice for you this month — be judicious with choosing what bets to take. Wager on fights that you think you have a good chance of predicting the outcome of. Or at least, look for the best odds and markets on offer. Don’t bet on matches just for the sake of it!

If it comes to it, sign-up with one of the top boxing betting apps and makes use of live betting. That way, you can get a feel for the fight before placing your wagers in play.

I’ll leave you with some boxing betting tips for picking the winner. These should come in handy when you’re looking to win some money. Oh, and don’t forget, I’ll be back with previews, odds, and recommended bets for the big fights set to go down this month. Hit up our boxing blog for those!

Good luck!
