Tevin Farmer vs. Joseph Diaz Betting Odds with Pick

The upcoming Jake Paul vs. AnEsonGib showdown has a serious headline bout in Tevin Farmer vs. Joseph Diaz.

Farmer, the IBF junior lightweight champion, will be looking to secure his fifth consecutive title defense with a win over Diaz.

Our recommended boxing betting sites have some nice odds on Farmer vs. Diaz, with the champ coming in as the favorite.

Diaz is no chump, however. He has lost just one fight in his professional career — other than a loss in 2012’s World Series of Boxing — and enters the ring with an official record of 30-1.

The fight is scheduled for 12 rounds at the Meridian at Island Gardens in Miami, Florida, on January 30. And, in my opinion, this is a fight no boxing betting fan should sleep on.

So what should you know if you’re betting on Tevin Farmer vs. Joseph Diaz? Let’s get into it.

Tevin Farmer Breakdown

A win here for the slick Tevin Farmer could see the champ move up to 135 pounds in search of new challenges.

But I believe that this could be the toughest challenge that he has faced to date.

Farmer’s last loss came back in 2012, but he has admitted several times in the past that he was far from serious about his pro career back then. Since that last loss, the Philadelphian southpaw has put together a run of 24 wins.

Ranked as the 82nd-best pound for pound fighter on the planet, the 29-year-old “American Idol” has huge marketing potential and is looking to capitalize on this in front of a new crowd of fans on January 30.

Farmer has made it clear in the past that he wants to fight the best out there. Opting for Diaz is certainly the right move to make to prove this.

Gervonta Davis, who held the WBA title before moving up in weight, was reportedly offered a chance to fight Farmer but declined.

Joseph Diaz Breakdown

Diaz enters this contest with a huge chance of getting his hand on the IBF title.

The 27-year-old was part of the United States team at the 2012 Olympic Games in London but lost in round two at the hands of Lazaro Alvarez.

Diaz has never shied away from fighting the biggest names in the division. His only loss came to WBC champion Gary Russell Jr. in May 2018, so this will be his second attempt at a world title.

There is no doubt that Diaz is a major threat to Farmer’s reign as a champ. If he takes the Golden Boy fighter for granted, we could see an upset on the cards.

That said, the odds of Diaz beating Farmer are hardly astronomical. This one should be close.

Who Wins?

As mentioned earlier, Farmer is the favorite to beat Diaz at odds of -185.

These are the lowest odds he has faced in his professional career, and Diaz’s caliber has everything to do with that. Diaz, on the other hand, will be an underdog for just the second time in his career, following his bout against Russell in May 2018.

You would have to applaud the matchmakers for this one, as it is refreshing to see a fight as close as this — especially a world title fight — so early in the year. Sure, we have Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury 2 coming up, but that is an exceptional bout.

Anyway, back to the matter at hand.

In order to figure out who wins this one, we have to look closely at how Farmer and Diaz’s styles will potentially negate one another.

When it comes to Farmer, he has an excellent skill set that is based on defense and speed. With lightning-fast reflexes, sweet movement, and a high fight IQ, he has pretty much done as he has pleased against his opposition since losing his last fight.

Farmer’s ability to see shots coming and put himself in the right position to counter is excellent to watch. Given he is so adept at avoiding shots, he tends to take minimal damage in fights and frustrate his opponents into overreaching and making mistakes.

He is a very difficult guy to catch, so Diaz will have his work cut out. If you miss, he will make you pay. He tends to throw bursts of combinations to the head and body, but he is far from being a one-punch knockout artist.

If he had more power, I believe Farmer would be considered among the very best in boxing.

The challenger, Diaz, has a much better KO ratio than the champ. His style is based on catching his opponents napping before unloading with weighty hooks. Like Farmer, he is not known to be a fighter that can ends contests with one shot, but he is definitely the more powerful of the two.

Defensively, Diaz is sound. His footwork and overall movement allow him to fight in range and chip away at his opponent until he sees an opening that he can capitalize on.

Betting on Farmer vs. Diaz

Farmer has a three-inch reach advantage over Diaz, and this could certainly play a part in the fight.

He is faster and undoubtedly a better boxer, so he will be looking to establish his dominance from the get-go. I’m not entirely convinced that there is a lot between these two, but the advantages that Farmer has should see him come out on top.

The Philadelphian is aiming to close out his time at 130 pounds with a dominant performance. Expect him to fight in the pocket and make every use of his speed and reflexes to land on Diaz.

I see Diaz getting frustrated and making mistakes, ultimately giving Farmer the opportunity to build up a commanding lead on the scorecards.
