Which Team Is Likely to Sign Logan Ryan in 2020?

Logan Ryan 2020 NFL

Logan Ryan is a two-time Super Bowl champion. Coming off a season in which he intercepted four passes and forced four fumbles, it’s a bit baffling that he’s still unsigned as we head into the 2020 NFL Draft. Remember, Ryan’s consistent play was a big reason the Titans advanced to the AFC Championship.

Tennessee opted not to extend Logan’s contract after paying him $10 million in 2019, but that’s not to say that he doesn’t have a lot left in the tank. The 29-year-old is motivated to prove that he’s still a top-tier corner, and it’s only a matter of time until he finds what he thinks is the right opportunity.

Where Logan Ryan will sign isn’t a question I anticipated having to answer 20+ days into April, but here we are. I’ll highlight four teams that make sense as a landing spot.

New York Jets

We’ll likely see Joe Douglas spend his early picks on a wide receiver and an offensive tackle. Simply put, New York’s main priority during the draft is to boost the talent around Sam Darnold. This is why signing Logan Ryan to a contract would make so much sense.

Rumors that the Jets have been targeting Ryan seem to be genuine, especially if Jamal Adams is moved prior to or on the Day 1 of the draft. Brian Poole was resigned, and Pierre Desir was acquired in March, but Ryan could come in and immediately be a leader in Gregg Williams’ secondary.

After spending his first four years as a professional in Foxborough, it’s safe to say Logan knows a thing or two about winning games in the AFC East.

San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco currently owns two picks in the first round, and it’s possible one is utilized on a future replacement for Richard Sherman. Then again, if John Lynch signs Logan Ryan, he can zero in on a wide receiver and a defensive tackle.

Think about how good this squad was a season ago, and now imagine if Henry Ruggs III and Ross Blacklock came on board. Inking Ryan to even a short-term deal would afford the Niners enough confidence in their secondary to go full steam ahead addressing other needs.

Logan certainly wants to land with a contender, and he may not have any other choices that even compare. Unless, of course, the following team comes calling.

Kansas City Chiefs

When assessing the Chiefs roster, the cornerback position is the only area you can say needs to be improved. The offense remains intact and will once again be dominant, but the defense lost a key piece in the back end. Kendall Fuller’s four-year/$40 million deal with the Redskins has the Chiefs in line to draft a cornerback with their first pick in the draft, but why not add a proven commodity as well?

If Brett Veach went after Logan Ryan and snagged someone like A.J. Terrell in the draft, suddenly Steve Spagnuolo’s secondary isn’t so whack. How much money he could offer Ryan is where things get tricky.

Logan has gone on record stating he doesn’t want to take a pay cut, even if that means waiting this out and potentially remaining unsigned. However, an opportunity to play with Patrick Mahomes and chase Super Bowls for the next few years wouldn’t sound so bad.

Detroit Lions

With as many former Patriots as Matt Patricia has latched onto, a reunion with his former DC in New England could be in Logan Ryan’s future. Trading Darius Slay to Philadelphia has paved the way for the Lions to pursue a cornerback in the draft, but picking Jeffrey Okudah at #3 is far from a done deal.

Detroit could select Isaiah Simmons, or perhaps Bob Quin decides to trade back.

If the Lions decided to sign Logan Ryan, it would allow them to go all-in on Simmons at #3, a guy who ESPN’s Jeff Legwold has ranked as the top prospect in this class.

Prediction – Who Will Sign Logan Ryan?

If the Lions draft Isaiah Simmons third overall, that’s your first sign that Logan Ryan could be nearing a deal to come to Detroit. Matt Patricia knows how effective of a CB Logan is, and the numbers don’t lie.

I alluded to Ryan’s four interceptions and four forced fumbles in 2019, but I failed to mention his career-high 120 tackles, 4.5 sacks, or 19 passes defended.

The laundry list of Patriots players to make their way over to Motor City over the last couple of years is continually growing. Let’s add one more to the archives in the form of Logan Ryan.
