There may not be many sports tournaments and competitions running at the moment, but the Belarusian Premier League has just kicked off, and all eyes are on players and teams that not many knew much about not too long ago.
BATE Borisov is one of the powerhouses of Belarusian soccer, but it lost its grip on the Premier League last season as former power Dinamo Brest ended an incredible 13-year run of consecutive titles. Head coach Kirill Alshevsky will be hoping that his side can reclaim that crown this year.
Slavia Mozyr is the team aiming to stop BATE Borisov this weekend. I’ll break down this game for you in this betting preview which includes my Slavia Mozyr vs. BATE Borisov pick.
Latest Betting Odds for Slavia Mozyr vs. BATE
Slavia Mozyr to Win+766
BATE Borisov to Win-283
This should be a fairly one-sided game with BATE Borisov the big favorites to come away with the three points. That thinking is shown in the latest odds from BetOnline, which fancies the former champions to easily win and look to challenge Dinamo Brest right from the start this season.
Slavia Mozyr vs. BATE Match Preview
BATE Borisov surprisingly lost its season opener against Energetik-BGU last weekend. But the 2-0 reverse may not have too much of an effect as its main rivals for the Premier League title, Dinamo Brest, could only manage a draw at home to Smolevichi.
That gives the nation’s really big club a very good chance of getting going this week.
It doesn’t seem likely that BATE will come away from the first two games of the season without any points, so even a long trip down to the southeastern corner of the country should not stop Alshevsky’s team from recording its first win of the campaign.
Slavia Mozyr began its season in fine form by opening the scoring away from against Slutsk but had Igor Tymonyuk sent off 20 minutes from time, and the whole look of the game changed. Slutsk had already equalized just before half time and capitalized on having the extra man as the game drew to a close.
The home side took the lead with 15 minutes to go and added another penalty five minutes later to kill off any faint hopes of a point for Slavia.
Slavia’s mid-table finish last season was a distinct improvement on the last few years, but any team will find it tough when they are forced to play with a depleted team. This may be the first home game of the season for Slavia, but BATE is the far better side and is out for points after the disappointment of last week.
Betting Pick for Slavia Mozyr vs. BATE Borisov
BATE to Win
The odds may not be that attractive, but I can’t see BATE making the same mistakes as last week and losing to a Slavia side that threw away the chances of a win, or even a draw, last weekend.
There are not that many times that the big teams can afford to lose games and still expect to be competing at the end of the season. BATE was lucky that Dinamo Brest could not make home advantage pay in its season opener. They cannot let that happen again this weekend.
