Shakhtyor Soligorsk vs. Dynamo Brest Belarusian Cup semifinal

The cup holder’s grip on the trophy it won last season looks to be loosening, as Shakhtyor Soligorsk will need to score at least two goals to even take this tie to penalties on Wednesday.

It has been a frustrating campaign in the league so far for Dynamo Brest, but manager Sergey Kovalchuk will be hoping that the cup will continue to be a welcome distraction and maybe spur his side into action in its Premier League fixtures.

You can find my thoughts below in this Shakhtyor Soligorsk vs. Dynamo Brest betting preview.

Shakhtyor Soligorsk vs. Dynamo Brest Odds

Shakhtyor Soligorsk to Win-105
The Draw+225
Dynamo Brest to Win+302

With Dynamo Brest knowing that it can afford to lose this second-leg game and still win the tie, the pressure is all on the hosts. That’s why BetOnline makes Shakhtyor Soligorsk the odds-on favorite to win the game. But I’m not sure it will even be able to achieve that result. Dynamo has not played well this season so far but will be able to soak up the pressure here, so the price for a draw looks more tempting.

Match Preview

These two clubs have shared the cup in the last three seasons, with Shakhtyor Soligorsk lifting the trophy last year after back-to-back Dynamo Brest triumphs. After the 2-0 win in the first leg in Brest, the league champions definitely have the upper hand this season.

Two early goals in that game blew Shakhtyor away and may have essentially killed off the tie. Now Dynamo knows that if it can keep its opponents at arm’s length in the second leg, a place in the final is assured. That could then have an effect in the league, where Dynamo’s form has been less than impressive.

Shakhtyor’s league results have been just about as bad so far, with just two wins from its first six games. But the most recent victory was against Dynamo Brest at the weekend. That 2-0 win is exactly what is needed on Wednesday evening, so manager Yuriy Vernydub will be desperately trying to work out how he got his side to contain the league champions.

Brest was largely restricted to unsuccessful long-range efforts in that game, and Shakhtyor fully deserved the win. But it is a tall order asking this team to repeat the trick against a Dynamo team that will be more than happy to sit back and soak up the pressure.

Shakhtyor Soligorsk vs. Dynamo Brest Pick

  • The Draw

Dynamo Brest doesn’t need to do any better than draw here and will still go through to the final. It can even afford to lose 1-0, and everything will still be fine. The number of goals conceded this season will worry the Dynamo manager almost as much as the lack of points gained so far. But this is a team that is able to defend when needed, and that should ensure that this game ends in a stalemate.
