Serie A Predictions, Picks, and Best Bets for June 20, 2020

When Sassuolo beat Brescia 3-0 in early March, nobody could’ve predicted that we wouldn’t see any Serie A action for over three months. But following weeks of deliberation, Italian soccer returns with two fixtures on Saturday.

Here are the games taking place on June 20.

  • Torino vs. Parma
  • Verona vs. Cagliari

Relegation-threatened Torino welcomes Parma to Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino, while Verona and Cagliari face off in a mid-table battle. I share my predictions for both games in this post and look at the best value bets for Saturday’s Serie A matchups.

Let’s start with my predictions.

Torino to Beat Parma

Things were looking up for Torino when the club won their first two games back after the winter break. Moreno Longo’s side was sitting pretty in eighth at the beginning of January and was on course to secure European soccer for a second consecutive season.

However, Torino’s 2019/20 campaign quickly turned sour. Six straight defeats leading up to the unexpected stoppage — including a humiliating 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Atalanta — have left Longo’s men just two points clear of the relegation zone.

On the other hand, Parma has had a steady season up to now. I mean, the team hasn’t exactly set the league alight. But having only gained promotion to the top flight in 2018, manager Roberto D’Aversa will be happy that his team is sitting in the top half of the table.

The Yellow and Blues have picked up some notable victories this season, beating European regulars Roma and Napoli, as well as holding Inter to a draw. But they have struggled against some of the lesser teams in the division. Indeed, Parma suffered a disappointing defeat to second-bottom SPAL in their previous game.

Torino isn’t a bad team; the club has just been on a poor run. The lay-off will have given Longo’s men the opportunity to regroup and come back stronger, so I’m backing Torino to return with a win.

Verona and Cagliari to Draw

Verona has enjoyed an excellent campaign back in Serie A following promotion from the second tier last term. Even the most loyal Verona supporters wouldn’t have expected their team to be pushing for a European spot. But as things stand, Ivan Juric’s side is eighth — one point behind seventh-place Milan.

The newcomer’s success has been built on a solid backline. 20-year-old center-back Marash Kumbulla — who is attracting attention from a host of elite clubs — has forged a formidable partnership with on-loan Napoli man Amir Rrahmani. Only the top three sides in the division have better defensive records than Verona.

There was a point earlier in the season when Cagliari was flying. A remarkable 13-game unbeaten run propelled the club into the UCL places, but the good times didn’t last long. Since then, the Sardinia outfit has plummeted to twelfth after failing to win any of their previous 11 league outings.

Despite the two sides’ contrasting form, there really is very little to separate Verona and Cagliari. There may be three teams between them in the table, but Verona only leads Cagliari by three points. I can see this matchup ending in a draw.

Serie A Picks for Saturday, June 20

Here are my top betting picks for both Serie A games on June 20. Having done some research, I believe these are the best value bets for Saturday’s matchups.

Torino vs. Parma – Under 2.5 Total Goals (1.80)

Both Torino and Parma are among the lowest-scoring sides in Italy’s top tier this term. Only three sides have netted fewer goals than Torino, while Parma is the third-lowest scorer in the top half of the table.

This is likely to be a cagey affair, as Torino will be desperate to end their dismal losing streak. I’m expecting Longo to set his side up to avoid defeat, so I don’t think this will be a high-scoring encounter.

Verona vs. Cagliari – Cagliari to Win Either Half (2.10)

I know that I predicted this game would end level, but wagering on the draw is often a dangerous bet. Cagliari is certainly capable of claiming all three points, but backing the away side to win either half is less risky, and it still offers great value.

Granted, Verona is the favorite at 2.10, while the price for the Cagliari win is 3.40. But given that you can more than double your money by betting on Cagliari to win either half, I recommend going with the slightly safer option.
