Serie A Betting for Matchday 2 – Preview With Odds and Predictions

| August 30, 2019 6:28 am PDT
Serie A Match Day 2 Betting Preview

It was like Italian soccer never went away on Matchday 1 of the new Serie A season. Juventus was in complete control against Parma and did just enough to secure the three points. Meanwhile, goals, red cards, and VAR decisions were in plentiful supply across the rest of the weekend’s fixtures.

Roma showed that it will be an exciting team to watch this season as it shared six goals with Genoa. Napoli went one better by beating Fiorentina 4-3 in a fascinating encounter.

Not all the new summer signings were on show, but Inter backed up its close season spending by beating the newly promoted Lecce 4-0 with a goal from £75 million striker Romelu Lukaku.

As usual, I will be taking a look at every top flight game, including a featured match, from a betting perspective to see if we can find some value in one of the best soccer leagues in Europe.

This week I’ve chosen the Derby della Capitale as my featured game: Lazio vs. Roma.

Featured Game – Lazio vs. Roma

Just two weeks into the season and we already get to see a big derby game. Lazio ended the league season sluggishly last year, concentrating on the Coppa Italia, while Roma failed to qualify for the Champions League. Passion will be high as ever in the Stadio Olimpico for this one.

Here are the latest game odds courtesy of Betway.

Lazio to Win 2.25
The Draw 3.50
Roma to Win 3.10

Lazio is the slight favorite, but home advantage doesn’t mean much here with both clubs sharing the stadium.

Before I make my predictions and picks, I’m going to take a closer look at both teams.

The Biancocelesti started the new season off in fine form with a resounding 3-0 victory away at Sampdoria. This includes two goals from Ciro Immobile, his 100th and 101st in Serie A. This seemed like a tricky opening day fixture for Lazio. However, the Genoa side was no match for Simone Inzaghi’s men.

Sergej Milinković-Savić didn’t manage to get on the score sheet but was instrumental in the victory. And Lazio fans will be heartened to hear that Sergej might sign a contract extension this week after rumors of his departure circulated during summer.

Lazio team looks confident coming into this new season. Although anything can happen in a local derby, the sky-blue side of Rome may well be the happiest once this game is over.

Well, we now know that life is not going to be boring at Roma this season. Six goals were shared in the first game of the campaign. It looks like new boss Paulo Fonseca is willing to put his faith in youth to pick up the points this year.

What’s most disconcerting for the Giallorossi was how they allowed Genoa to get back into the game. Three times when Roma led, the visitors got back into the game.

Edin Dzeko did manage to get a goal, however. He is another big player who decided to stay at the club after it looked like he was scouting other teams over the summer.

Betting Pick and Prediction

A Derby della Capitale is always going to be difficult to call. The passion displayed on the pitch and in the stands makes for an engaging spectacle, but the outcome is nowhere near as predictable.

Lazio started the season in fine form, so I’m going to go for the favorites to sneak a win here. But with the way Roma is playing, there could be a fair few goals to celebrate along the way.

  • Lazio to Win

Now on to how I think the rest of the weekend’s Serie A games will shape up.

Bologna vs. SPAL

Bologna to Win 1.83
The Draw 3.40
SPAL to Win 4.75

The Bologna team was visibly inspired by the appearance of coach Siniša Mihajlović in the dugout on Sunday. Diagnosed with leukemia over the summer, the former player and current coach left the hospital for the first time in 40 days to help his team.

It is not known whether he will be at this game, but there is obviously a fighting spirit at Bologna that starts all the way at the top.

SPAL started very brightly in its opening day fixture at home to last year’s surprise outfit Atalanta. Two-nil up after only 26 minutes, SPAL had taken advantage of some leaky defense to secure its lead. But Atalanta surged back into the game without a hitch. That naivety that could cost SPAL in Bologna, too.

Siniša Mihajlović was the main reason the Rossoblu stayed up last season, and he is still having a massive effect this year – even when very sick. Bologna should be able to get all three points here.

  • Bologna to Win

Milan vs. Brescia

Milan to Win 1.45
The Draw 4.33
Brescia to Win 7.50

It is hard to believe that Milan will play this match as poorly as it did in the season opener against Udinese. There wasn’t a single shot on goal recorded for the Rossoneri.

New head coach Marco Giampaolo has already suggested that he will change his formation to make the most out of last season’s top striker, Krzysztof Piatek.

Brescia stunned Cagliari in Sardinia as it came away with three points and one of the most underrated results of the opening day’s fixtures. An Alfredo Donnarumma penalty was enough to separate the sides. And although the penalty kick decision was disputed, the result was no more than what the promoted club deserved.

Brescia was without the newly signed Mario Balotelli for its first game of the season due to a four-match ban he is currently sitting out. He might have made the difference in Milan, but the home side will need to improve vastly from last week to get points here.

I think they will, but it is not looking so great at the San Siro as the activity in the transfer window suggested.

  • Milan to Win

Juventus vs. Napoli

Juventus to Win 1.90
The Draw 3.30
Napoli to Win 4.50

Another huge game very early on in the season as the reigning champion takes on the team that has come closest to it over the last few seasons. Juve was able to rest many of the new arrivals for the 1-0 win over Parma on Saturday, but there could be a few more changes for the visit of Napoli.

Even a center back pairing of Kostas Manolas and Kalidou Koulibaly was not enough to keep Fiorentina from scoring against Napoli three times last week. But thankfully for the Partenopei, it had more than enough attacking talent of its own. Fortuitous penalty decisions helped as well, but Napoli will be in contention once again this season.

Juventus was in complete control against Parma, but they still didn’t sparkle in its Matchday 1 victory. It seems too much for Napoli to come away from Turin with the win so early in the season, but the price for a draw is tempting.

  • The Draw

Atalanta vs. Torino

Atalanta to Win 1.65
The Draw 3.80
Torino to Win 5.50

After the heroics of last season, it is going to be exciting to see whether Gian Piero Gasperini can repeat the success and push for further glory. The comeback from two goals away at SPAL is encouraging. By keeping the majority of the squad together, Atalanta should be competing once again.

The early rounds of the Europa League might affect the vitality of Torino’s start to this Serie A season. However, the 2-1 victory over Sassuolo showed that this team is looking to repeat last year’s achievements. This will be a good early test for the Granata.

With a few other more high-profile games this weekend, this matchup could fly under the radar. But it promises to be a very good game. If Torino is not too tired from its continental excursions, this could end in a draw.

  • The Draw

Cagliari vs. Inter

Cagliari to Win 5.00
The Draw 3.80
Inter to Win 1.70

Cagliari spent a lot of money in the summer to ensure that it would not have to rely on an impressive home record to stay up once again. But the shock defeat to Brescia on Matchday 1 suggests that there is more work to be done with this squad. The visit of Inter could be another testing evening for the Sardinians.

Antonio Conte has come into Inter to challenge Juventus for the title this season and has been handed a lot of money to put together the squad to do just that. The 4-0 win over Lecce on Monday showed that this is a team that could push further than ever compared to previous seasons.

The Sardegna Arena became something of a fortress last season, but Cagliari has already lost once there this campaign. With Inter in the same mood it showed against Lecce, they should leave with three points, too.

  • Inter to Win

Genoa vs. Fiorentina

Genoa to Win 2.60
The Draw 3.50
Fiorentina to Win 2.62

Genoa barely survived relegation last season after a terrible run of form towards the end of the season. On the other hand, the 3-3 draw against Roma in the season’s opening weekend shows that Genoa has a little bit more bite this campaign. This could be an interesting encounter.

Only the scoreline against Napoli last week could dampen the spirits of Fiorentina fans as they celebrated the beginning of a new era under owner Rocco Commisso. This new, young Viola team should do better than last season. Victories against sides like Genoa will be expected.

There are a lot of good things happening in Florence at the moment, and the signing of Franck Ribery gave Fiorentina another sign of hope this season. This will be tough, however, and I think a draw is the most likely outcome.

  • The Draw

Lecce vs. Hellas Verona

Lecce to Win 1.95
The Draw 3.50
Hellas Verona to Win 4.00

Two newly promoted clubs face each other this week as Hellas make the long trip down to the south of Italy to take on Lecce. The home club was thrashed by an invigorated Inter last week, but they will look to the home advantage to get its first points of the season.

Verona played with ten men for the majority of the opening weekend and still managed a draw against Bologna. It’s that kind of fight that this team will need if it doesn’t want to be involved in a relegation battle. This Verona side should play the same way against Lecce if they don’t want to come away empty-handed.

The spirit of this Verona team cannot be questioned, but Lecce will fancy its chances at home. I think that it could be the first win of the season for the Salentini.

  • Lecce to Win

Sassuolo vs. Sampdoria

Sassuolo to Win 2.37
The Draw 3.50
Sampdoria to Win 2.90

Francesco “Ciccio” Caputo managed to get on the score sheet against Torino but could not find the extra reserve to grab a point for the Neroverdi. It could be a difficult season for Sassuolo who will need to build up the points early to escape the end-of-season relegation scrap.

A 3-0 home defeat to Lazio will not have been the start to the season that Sampdoria expected after a relatively successful campaign last year. There still may be too much pressure on veteran goal king Fabio Quagliarella, but this is a team that could push for a European place if it gets on a good run.

Sampdoria will need to up its game after such a poor opening day performance. But if new coach Eusebio Di Francesco can get this team to play for him quickly, then there could be something for it here.

  • Sampdoria to Win

Udinese vs. Parma

Udinese to Win 2.15
The Draw 3.25
Parma to Win 3.60

Udinese benefitted from some VAR decisions to ensure the victory over Milan last week. But the Zebrette deserved the three points. It looks like the return of Igor Tudor as head coach could be good for the club. Udinese flirted with relegation too frequently last season as well, but they should be more stable this time around.

Although Juventus was never going to lose against Parma on opening day of the season, there were still chances for Roberto D’Aversa’s side to make an impact. Last season’s 14th position finish could well be repeated if not bettered this year.

Parma finishing so high in the table last season after all its recent difficulties was a major achievement of its own. But the fans will expect even more this season. They could come away from Udine disappointed, however.

  • Udinese to Win

Final Words

It is already looking like a fascinating season in Italy. Many hope to see Juventus face a sterner test in the race for the scudetto this year.

Some of the new faces in the league have already made an impact, while some are still waiting to get their seasons going. But it is still very early in the season as the league starts to take shape.

Let me know what you think of my predictions and whether Juventus can be toppled. Remember to check out our recommended soccer betting sites for all your wagers.

Enjoy the games.
