This might have been one of the most important fixtures of the entire season. If both sides had been able to keep up their pressure on Bayern, it might have even been a title decider.

Instead, the perennial champions won the league yet again, and these two have to make do with fighting it out for the runners-up spot. Below, I’ve covered the odds for this match, as well as providing my RB Leipzig vs. Borussia Dortmund prediction and betting pick.

It is a predictably close calling of this fixture from BetOnline, with the home side offered as the slight favorites to win the battle for second place. It will be interesting to see whether either team has the enthusiasm for fighting it out to the bitter end, but any of the match result options could be argued for here.

Leipzig had already lost Timo Werner to the English Premier League next season, and Bayern’s win on Tuesday night meant that any very faint hopes of taking over at the top of the Bundesliga disappeared, too. In the end, a 2-2 draw with Fortuna Dusseldorf only ended up helping the visitor’s fight against relegation.

Although RB Leipzig has only lost one game since the turn of the year, it is the eight draws in that time — and four since the league started up again — that ended its title challenge. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann will no doubt lead his team in the hunt again next year, but it is disappointing how quickly this team faded from the fight.

Dortmund is another club that will have a number of regrets when it looks back on the 2019/20 season. A spate of draws in September and October probably proved to be crucial, but there have also been too many defeats for this team if it really wanted to take over at the top from Bayern.

The shock defeat to Mainz on Wednesday can probably be put down to the fact that the players already knew the title was gone, although the 05ers performed heroically for their three points. But if Lucien Favre can keep hold of his top players, there will probably be another battle at the top of the league next season for Dortmund.

It really depends which set of players is more up for playing out this ultimately meaningless fixture as to who ends up as winners. With little on the line, neither side will be incredibly bothered about battling to get back into the game if it falls behind, and a share of the spoils could be the eventual outcome.
