The PGL Major Stockholm 2021 features the following stages.

  • New Challengers Stage: October 26 – 29
  • New Legends Stage: October 30 – November 2
  • New Champions Stage: November 4 – 7

Let’s explore how each of these would work.

New Challengers Stage

The first stage of the PGL Major 2021 includes 16 teams that will face each other in the CSGO Swiss System. This means that we have five rounds in total and when they are done, eight teams will progress to the New Legends Stage and the other eight will go home.

You need to win three games to advance, while three defeats are enough for elimination.

We already know the squads and the draw for the first round, so let’s check them out.

  • Astralis vs. Copenhagen Flames
  • Team Spirit vs. FaZe Clan
  • ENCE vs. GODSENT
  • PaiN Gaming vs. Entropiq
  • BIG vs. Virtus.pro
  • Movistar Riders vs. Renegades
  • Heroic vs. Tyloo
  • MOUZ vs. Sharks Esports

The matches in the first two rounds are all in the best-of-one format. All advancement or elimination fixtures are in the best-of-three.

New Legends Stage

The top eight teams from the PGL Major 2021 New Challengers Stage progress to the New Legends Stage where the following eight teams will join the show.

  • Ninjas in Pyjamas
  • FURIA Esports
  • Natus Vincere
  • Team Vitality
  • Team Liquid
  • Gambit Esports
  • G2 Esports
  • Evil Geniuses

The format from there on is identical to the previous stage. There will be five rounds of fixtures in the Swiss System and the best eight squads proceed to the next stage, the other eight are knocked out.

Again, all advancement and eliminations matches are in the best-of-three, while everything else is in the best-of-one format.

New Champions Stage

The final stage of the CSGO PGL Major Stockholm 2021 will feature the top eight teams from the previous phase. They face each other in a single-elimination bracket that includes quarterfinals, semifinals, and a Grand Final.

All matches are in the best-of-three format and the teams that lose are eliminated for good. The Grand Final that will determine the winner is scheduled for Sunday, November 7.

  • GODSENT (+10000)
  • Sharks (+30000)
  • TYLOO (+50000)

Based on the prices and the main impressions from all CSGO teams in 2021 so far, I believe we have four main groups of squads when it comes to the PGL Major 2021.

PGL Major 2021 Contenders

There are three teams that stand above the rest when it comes to their performances in 2021. Na’Vi is arguably the main favorite for the PGL Major in Stockholm and that’s only natural considering the squad’s achievements.

The year started with a victory in the BLAST Premier: Global Final 2020 and was followed by more titles, most notably the Intel Extreme Masters XVI – Cologne and the ESL Pro League Season 14.

Natus Vincere was also the first team to qualify for the PGL Major Stockholm 2021. The overall quality is insane all across the board, s1mple is at the top of his game, and the chemistry is obvious. This is the team to beat in Sweden and everyone is aware of that.

One squad that knows how to defeat Na’Vi is Gambit. The Russians just did that in the Intel Extreme Masters Season XVI Fall at the start of October and they will be hoping for more of the same.

With wins in BLAST Premier: Spring Finals 2021 and the Intel Extreme Masters XV – World Championship, Gambit clearly proved they can beat anybody on their day.

The French powerhouse Vitality is the third team that will arrive in Stockholm with the title in mind. The year hasn’t been that good for the organization’s standards, but the French side has victories against pretty much everyone in 2021.

Na’Vi is the only exception, but Vitality pushed them to the limit every single time the teams met. On a good day, the French squad can be unstoppable which is why I put them in the favorites pool.

PGL Major 2021 Dark Horses

The next group consists of dark horses that have plenty of talent but lack the consistency of the main favorites. I believe that the following teams belong here.

  • G2
  • NiP
  • Heroic
  • Liquid
  • Astralis
  • Virtus.pro
  • FaZe Clan

All of the squads above will be targeting the CSGO PGL Major 2021 New Champions Stage and they certainly have the quality to reach it.

The big question is whether they enter the tournament anywhere close to their best. G2 certainly looked well in their latest matches, while we haven’t seen most of the other teams in action in a while.

I’m sure that at least one or two of the teams above will be stronger than expected and will have a deep run. The same applies to the next group.

PGL Major 2021 Sleepers

This one features teams that are decent and might leave a mark, but it would be very surprising to see them winning. I would say that reaching the final stage of the competition will be a huge success for them, but I wouldn’t completely rule them out from something more.

Here are the PGL Major Stockholm 2021 sleepers.

  • FURIA
  • ENCE
  • BIG
  • Spirit
  • MOUZ
  • Entropiq
  • Copenhagen Flames
  • Evil Geniuses
  • Movistar Riders

I believe that all of these squads have decent players and they might be a factor if they are at their best. And yet, their performance in 2021 so far suggests they are not on the level of the likes of Na’Vi, Gambit, or the other leading sides.

I would say that BIG would be my pick if I have to select one team that has a chance of surpassing the expectations. The early stages of the PGL Major will tell us more about the sleepers and whether some of them are ready to shock the favorites.

Outsiders

The rest of the teams are outsiders and I don’t think they have much of a chance. Qualifying for the 2021 PGL Major Stockholm is already a success for them and anything else will be a bonus.

I don’t think they even have a realistic chance to reach the second phase of the competition, so I expect to see paiN Gaming, Renegades, GODSENT, Sharks, and TYLOO eliminated after the New Challengers stage.
