McGregor vs. Poirier 3 Tale of the Tape
Before we get into a bit of analysis of both fighters, let’s check out the tale of the tape for McGregor vs. Poirier 3.

As you can see from the contrasting records above, these two are elite fighters with plenty still left in the tank.
But the advantages look to be mostly in Poirier’s favor ahead of their trilogy fight.
And here’s why.
How Poirier Can Beat McGregor at UFC 264
When Poirier knocked out McGregor in the second round of their rematch at UFC 257, I was stunned.
That might sound strange for someone who predicted a convincing win for “The Diamond” as soon as the fight was rumored. But as it goes, my surprise was down to watching the UFC superstar get knocked out in a UFC fight. This was something that had never happened before.
Will Poirier beat McGregor by KO this time around? I think he can do just that. I won’t offer my betting pick for McGregor vs. Poirier 3 until I have all the facts about the fight to hand. Still, at this point, successive knockout wins for the American is a distinct possibility.
Alongside knocking McGregor out, the other likely way Poirier will end the fight is by submission.
Put simply, Poirier is a beast. And I’m getting kind of blue in the face telling everyone that. His KO win over McGregor in the last bout opened up many eyes to just how devastatingly good the man is, though. Convincing others that he is the better of the two this time around won’t be as difficult.
That’s not to say that a win for Poirier over McGregor is a foregone conclusion. I would lean 60/40 at this stage, so make of that what you will.
Poirier’s Key Strengths and Weaknesses
|Main Strengths||Main Weaknesses|
|Striking||Tense in Early Exchanges|
|Durability||Reckless at Times|
Poirier is the best in the UFC lightweight division. He is Mr. Consitency, too, bringing a level of reliability into the cage seldom seen in the sport.
Consistency and reliability are not considered among the sexier attributes in MMA. I get that. But Poirier counterbalances these with stunning KO power, great wrestling, and a very dangerous submission game.
With that said, Poirier came super close to submitting Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 in September 2019. So please don’t sleep on him winning by sub.
On the other hand, Poirier is not without his weaknesses, as you can see from the table above. But will any of these manifest in his performance on the night?
How McGregor Can Beat Poirier at UFC 264
It’s a case of win or bust for the legendary MMA career of Conor McGregor.
If he beats Poirier, he strolls into a UFC lightweight title fight against Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler’s winner at UFC 262. Not only that, but he becomes redeemed in the eyes of his supporters, as well as the flag bearers of McGregor hype and hysteria in the MMA community.
But lose? Well, he doesn’t want to think about that.
A loss for McGregor would be devastating for his career. Poirier can afford a loss against the Irishman, as his career isn’t as fragile. In other words, the former UFC lightweight champion has built a profile on the back of being this braggadocious knockout artist that rips through the opposition.
He’s turning up to win this fight. McGregor can beat Poirier, as he has done it before. Sure, that came at featherweight, when he was on a rampage and Poirier was struggling. But, psychologically, he knows there is something he can stir in the king of Layafette.
McGregor was doing pretty well in the rematch and landing some big shots. That was before Poirier chopped him down with leg kicks prior to knocking him out. That will give him some confidence in securing a stoppage win.
If the 32-year-old is to beat Poirier, it will be by KO/TKO. There is no other likely pathway to victory for The Notorious one.
Good to hear Dustin, I hope so. As last time you backed up and shot inside the first 30 seconds. I’ll be in the middle from the very go if you want it. You know that. I’ll be ready for the tactics this time too tho.— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) April 6, 2021

McGregor’s Key Strengths and Weaknesses
The following piece covers what you need to know about what McGregor does well and not so well when the cage door closes.
In a nutshell, he has one of the most famous weapons in UFC history in his explosive left hand. If he can plant his feet and land a big shot on Poirier, we could be looking at this trilogy ending 2-1 in favor of the Crumlin-born star.
Can McGregor beat Poirier any other way?
That’s All, Folks!
So that should be enough to get you in the mood for betting on the Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier trilogy.
The best odds for McGregor vs. Poirier 3 look pretty tasty, so I would think about hopping on these before we see the hype and hyperbole chop those prices down to their stubs. However, if you believe holding off a little longer is the way forward, there is nothing wrong with that either.
That’s all for me for now. I’ll leave you with some additional material to help you place your bets on McGregor vs. Poirier 3.
Good luck with your bets.
