Predicting the NFL Head Coach Vacancies for 2022

| January 17, 2022 12:42 pm PDT

The end of every NFL regular season brings a bunch of movement in the coaching and front office departments. This year is no different as we already have seven coaches who have been let go at the conclusion of the 2021-22 NFL regular season.

There have recently been interviews happening already and NFL teams are trying to get their next guy before someone else does. With this much movement among the NFL coaching staffs, this breakdown should help you get an idea of what is going on.

Here are the current head coach vacancies with predictions, as well as other teams that could fire their current head coach.

Chicago Bears

The Bears ended things with the 2018 Coach of the Year award winner in Matt Nagy. Nagy was from the Andy Reid coaching tree and was expected to take their offense to another level.

He may have won the 2018 Coach of the Year award, but that season was dominated by their defense.

Nagy being an offensive minded coach with two very high quarterback draft picks (Mitchell Trubisky, Justin Fields) in his time in Chicago seemed like they had a strong chance for a major improvement. That ended up being a wildly wrong assumption, as the Bears’ offensive numbers have been terrible in Nagy’s time.

Here are the Bears’ offensive rankings under Nagy from 2018 until 2022.

Year Points Per Game Offensive Yards Per Game
2018-2019 (12-4) 25.6 (10th) 344.6 (21st)
2019-2020 (8-8) 17.5 (29th) 296.8 (29th)
2020-2021 (8-8) 22.4 (23rd) 325.9 (28th)
2021-2022 (6-11) 18.3 (27th) 307.4 (24th)

The Bears had an incredibly dominant defense in 2018 and helped the Bears put up good points that season. Offensively they ranked 21st, which is pretty bad. Nagy won the Coach of the Year award because the Bears went 12-4, but he totally didn’t deserve it.

The biggest selling point for the Bears right now is Justin Fields. Fields has a chance to be a franchise quarterback that the Bears have been dying for basically their entire franchise history. He is one of the major reasons why a head coach would want to take the job.

Bears have had tons of interviews or scheduled interviews with coaches Doug Pederson, Brian Flores, Brian Daboll, Leslie Frazier, Matt Eberflus, Nathaniel Hackett, Dan Quinn, Byron Leftwich, Todd Bowles, and likely more.

I would say Brian Daboll and Brian Flores are the two top candidates right now, but there could still be a lot of movement in the odds. Daboll has been incredible in launching Josh Allen and the Bills’ offense into stardom, so he could look to do so again for Justin Fields and the Bears.

  • Prediction – Bills’ Offensive Coordinator, Brain Daboll

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins had the most shocking head coach firing so far this season. They fired Brian Flores after three seasons with Miami, finishing with a record of 5-11, 10-6, and 9-8 (24-25 total).

Flores deserves a lot of credit for the success Miami has had recently. The Dolphins had one of the worst teams on paper basically throughout the last three seasons and Flores appeared to be turning things around.

They had a terrible start to this season and were 1-7 after 8 weeks of play. Since then, they became one of the hottest teams in the NFL and were able to finish 9-8. 9-8 doesn’t look great but when you take their terrible start into consideration, Brian Flores deserves a ton of credit.

He will be a highly sought-after head coach after his unexpected firing. He has already been talking with the Houston Texans and the Chicago Bears, but more teams are likely to have discussions with him.

With the Dolphins firing a successful coach in Flores, that might make them an undesirable location for the higher end coaches. I think they will grab someone more desperate to get a head coaching job rather than someone who will have a lot of options.

Daboll is favored to go to Miami as well, but Kellen Moore, Doug Pederson, Eric Bieniemy, and more are in the mix.

  • Prediction – Former Eagles’ Head Coach, Doug Pederson

New York Giants

The Giants have been terrible recently and they decided to let Joe Judge go after two seasons of being the head coach. The Giants went 6-10 two seasons ago and followed that up with a 4-13 record this season under Judge.

The Giants are probably going to be a very undesirable destination for the top tier head coaches, so landing a top tier coach might be a long shot. They have a young quarterback in Daniel Jones who can give them a little bit of intrigue, but he hasn’t exactly looked great.

They also have some solid playmakers in Saquon Barkley, Kenny Golladay, and Kadarius Toney. They also have a solid defense as well, which can give a defensive minded coach a lot to work with.

The Giants are going to be a tough team to predict when it comes to betting on their next head coach. Apparently Brian Flores could have interest in going there since he is from New York.

The defense they currently have, and decent potential offensively could sell Flores on them just enough.

  • Prediction – Former Dolphins’ Head Coach, Brian Flores

Jacksonville Jaguars

Urban Meyer’s time was an abomination for the Jaguars. He was constantly in the headlines for off the field and on the field issues. Meyer seemed to have no interest in being an NFL head coach and didn’t care who knew it.

The Jaguars have some players that could gain some interest among the head coach candidates. Trevor Lawrence was the number one overall draft pick from last season and is a potential franchise quarterback.

Lawrence will be the biggest selling point as someone could look to capitalize on his potential. They also have some offensive playmakers who could make up for a solid offense before we know it.

The Jags aren’t perfect, but they could look to land someone on a longer deal with their current roster. It also doesn’t hurt that they are in Florida and have amazing weather year-round.

I think one of the talented offensive minded coaches can be a great fit for the Jaguars. Brian Daboll, Eric Bieniemy, Kellen Moore, Byron Leftwich, Nathaniel Hackett, and more could be very interested in the Jaguars’ offensive potential.

Maybe a lateral move from a current Florida coach in the Bucs’ offensive coordinator would make sense here.

  • Prediction – Tampa Bay Buccaneers Offensive Coordinator, Byron Leftwich

Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings have a lot of potential, but they just couldn’t seem to get the job done. They have a ton of talent on both sides of the ball, but they decided to move on from their head coach in Mike Zimmer.

Zimmer didn’t do terrible as the head coach for the Vikings, but mediocrity is not what teams are looking for.

Zimmer has been the head coach for the Vikings for quite some time now. He started all the way back in 2014 and his long tenure finally came to an end. His record in the past 8 seasons has been solid at 72-56-1 (.562 winning percentage).

His record is solid, but the Vikings only made the playoff in 3 out of those 8 seasons. They lost to the Seahawks in the 2015 Wild Card, lost to the Eagles in the 2017 Championship Game, and lost to the 49ers in the Divisional Round.

The Vikings have a top tier offense behind Kirk Cousins, Dalvin Cook, Adam Theilen, Justin Jefferson, and a great offensive line. Their solid offense might mean they want to head in the defensive area to balance things out.

I think Todd Bowles makes sense here because of his heavy blitzing and great defense. That mixed with the Vikings offense could make them a solid team. Although Zimmer was a similar coach in that way could mean it is more of a lateral move than a move forward.

  • Prediction – Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Defensive Coordinator, Todd Bowles

Denver Broncos

Denver has a ton of players on both sides of the ball, but quarterback is their downfall. Vic Fangio was fired for them recently and he even said their division rivals have an advantage due to their top-level quarterbacks.

If the Broncos can land a top tier quarterback like Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers, or a promising rookie, they can become a very underrated target for head coaches.

Landing Wilson or Rodgers aren’t exactly easy, so this offseason will be interesting for Denver. Although it might make them too late for the top head coach candidates.

I think that puts them at a disadvantage and will have to decide on another option here. They could honestly take either an offensive or defensive minded coach, but their quarterback position will be the biggest factor here.

  • Prediction – Dallas Cowboys’ Defensive Coordinator, Dan Quinn

Houston Texans

The Texans are another team who had a bit of a surprise firing. The Texans had probably the worst team constructed this season but were able to still win 4 games. David Culley was the head coach this year and should actually get credit for not being as bad as they could have been.

The drama with the Texans comes with Deshaun Watson. If Watson is just going to sit for another year or more, the Texans won’t be a desirable team to go to. They desperately need to decide with Watson and need to get past it.

Houston seems like they are going to need a lot of time to get back into the playoffs. It would have made a lot of sense to stick with Culley for the time being and try to grab some more players in the meantime.

They decided to move on and try to go with someone else, but it is unclear why. This will be a shot in the dark to predict who will be the head coach.

  • Prediction – Los Angeles Chargers’ Offensive Coordinator, Joe Lombardi

Other Potential Head Coach Firings

This might not be the final list of head coaches to be fired in the NFL. Once the playoffs end, there could be even more openings and odds shakeups. Here are a couple of other teams that could fire their current head coaches and try to land someone better.

  • Carolina Panthers (Matt Rhule)
  • Atlanta Falcons (Arthur Smith)
  • Seattle Seahawks (Pete Carroll)
  • Las Vegas Raiders (Jon Gruden/Rich Bisaccia)

Betting on who becomes the new head coach is something you can do on the best NFL betting sites. If you like a certain fit for a team, why not try and win a bet from it?
