Odds, Previews, and Picks for Betting on A-League Matchday 16

A-League match Day 16 Previews and Picks

Sydney FC was able to sit back and enjoy its bye week and still command a healthy lead of the rest of the A-League as matchday 15 came around. Both Melbourne City and Perth Glory won to keep up the pressure ahead of their meeting this weekend.

But Wellington Phoenix’s unbeaten streak finally came to an end at the hands of Brisbane. Elsewhere, Adelaide and Western United both kept up their chances of a finals appearance with victories over Melbourne Victory and Central Coast Mariners.

Matchday 16 presents some very interesting fixtures. As well as the meeting between the teams in second and third, there is also Sydney’s trip to Melbourne to take on the Victory hot off a big win in the Asian Champions League.

After taking a look at all the games from a betting perspective, here are my A-League matchday 16 top wagers and betting predictions.

Wellington Phoenix vs. Newcastle Jets Betting Pick

Wellington Phoenix to Win 1.85
The Draw 3.75
Newcastle Jets to Win 3.80

The Nix was unable to make it a club-record ten games unbeaten last weekend as it fell to a resurgent Brisbane Roar. Although there were a number of chances in the game, there was not the same level of intensity as in previous weeks, and the 1-0 loss was probably a fair result on the day.

After that disappointment, a home game against the team at the bottom of the table is just what Ufuk Talay and his team would have wanted, and three points will be expected by the Yellow Fever.

Another week, another defeat for the Jets, as Newcastle failed to win for the seventh straight week. It was a stubborn display from the visitors, but Newcastle never really looked like getting anything against a Melbourne City side with eyes on second place at the very least. It was the same old story for Newcastle as they desperately missed the star players that may well have made a difference this season if they had not been injured.

Newcastle must now travel to the New Zealand capital knowing that its hosts will be looking to get right back in the race for the top positions after what has been a very impressive season. The departure of some big names has not had much effect on the Nix as new players have come into the squad and performed admirably.

This should be three more points for the home side.

Pick
  • Wellington Phoenix to Win
    1.85

Melbourne Victory vs. Sydney FC Betting Pick

Melbourne Victory to Win 3.00
The Draw 3.40
Sydney FC to Win 2.25

Matchday 16 sees two of the A-League’s big boys face each other in what should be a cracker at AAMI Park. Back-to-back wins had looked to give the Victory some of its old swagger back, but defeats to Central Coast and Adelaide in successive weeks have put a dampener on thoughts of reaching the finals again this season.

But if Marco Kurz’s side can keep the good form that it showed in the week in the 5-0 thrashing of Bali United in the Asian Champions League, then it might have a chance.

Sydney will have enjoyed the week’s rest that the bye gave it for matchday 15. Even the wins for its closest rivals will not have worried the Sky Blues, who are looking by far the best team in the A-League this season.

That is not to say that this game is a foregone conclusion, however. The fact is that Sydney can take its foot off the pedal slightly at the moment and still be fairly well assured of a Premiers title.

Adam Le Fondre has been the main source of goals this season, but Kostas Barbarouses will be hoping to get one this week against the club he left in the off season.

Sydney is favored to keep its winning streak going here, but I feel that Melbourne Victory will raise its game against its old rivals. The fact that there is such a gap between the two in the table should spur the hosts on even further.

The Victory may not be able to take all three points, but a draw would be a very good outcome.

Pick
  • The Draw
    3.40

Central Coast Mariners vs. Brisbane Roar Betting Pick

Central Coast Mariners to Win 2.75
The Draw 3.50
Brisbane Roar to Win 2.37

Central Coast followed its very good win over Melbourne Victory with a less-than-satisfactory defeat against Western United last weekend. The Mariners had lost the game within the first 21 minutes when they found themselves 3-0 down. A spirited second-half revival was good to see, but it ultimately brought Central Coast no goals, and manager Alen Stajcic will be frustrated that the poor start to the game cost his side dearly. A win would have seen CCM flirting with the top of the table rather than its more common basement position.

Brisbane, on the other hand, enjoyed another good victory over the Phoenix, making it four games unbeaten for Robbie Fowler’s side. The win took the Roar up to seventh and just two points behind Adelaide in the all-important finals positions.

Brad Inman should have kept his impressive goal-scoring run going in the 1-0 win over the Phoenix, but it was sub Dylan Wenzel-Halls who scored with his first real involvement in the game that gave Brisbane the points.

Another victory here would put Brisbane in a good position with less than half of the regular season remaining.

It always seems to be one step forward and at least two steps back for the Mariners. There are some very good players in the squad, and when it all clicks, it is a team that looks like it could take on just about anyone. But that doesn’t happen enough, and I would not be surprised if Brisbane takes all three points from its trip to Gosford.

Pick
  • Brisbane Roar to Win
    2.37

Melbourne City vs. Perth Glory Betting Pick

Melbourne City to Win 2.37
The Draw 3.40
Perth Glory to Win 2.80

It was a comfortable win for Melbourne City last weekend against basement dwellers Newcastle, but this week’s fixture promises to be far tougher for Erick Mombaerts’ side.

This should be the game of the round as the clubs in second and third go head to head to see who will have more chance of getting anywhere near Sydney at the top of the table. Melbourne has been steady rather than spectacular with its soccer this season and could come unstuck against a Perth side that has some very good players of its own.

The main focus of the Glory team is Diego Castro, of course. He is usually instrumental in most of the positive moves by the team, and his strength and poise on the ball is hard to beat. The Perth captain had a number of chances against Western Sydney Wanderers last weekend, but it was Bruno Fornaroli who capitalized on a blunder at the back to score the only goal of the game.

That win kept Perth breathing down Melbourne City’s neck near the top and sets up this one very nicely.

If the game against WSW was anything to go by, this one could be a lively and physical affair as the two teams go all out for the win. I think Perth will have the upper hand, even away from home, and will leapfrog Melbourne to go into second after taking all three points.

Pick
  • Perth Glory to Win
    2.80

Western United vs. Adelaide United Betting Pick

Western United to Win 2.70
The Draw 3.50
Adelaide United to Win 2.40

Scott Macdonald left Western United to join Robbie Fowler in Brisbane before the win against Central Coast, but it will be the possible loss of Alessandro Diamanti through injury that will worry manager Mark Rudan more this week. Macdonald had done a good job for the expansion side at times, but it is the former Italy international that is really the central figure in the team. If Diamanti does miss out here, Western still has the A-League’s highest-ever goal scorer, Besart Berisha, to fall back on, however.

Adelaide is the only team in the A-League not to have drawn a single game this season, but the narrow win over Melbourne Victory last week was much-needed considering Gertjan Verbeek’s side had lost four in a row previously.

Two of those defeats were to Sydney and Perth, but it has been a frustrating season for the Reds, who now sit in sixth position. A win here against its closest rivals would be a very positive move for Adelaide, but I’m not sure there is enough consistency in the team.

It will be interesting to see whether Diamanti plays, and if he doesn’t, how Western United will cope without its talismanic creator. How that goes could be crucial to this game and the rest of the season for Mark Rudan’s side. I’m going to go for the home win here, but Western United could find this season a lot more difficult if Diamanti’s scans come back with bad news.

Pick
  • Western United to Win
    2.70

Final Words

Sydney will hope to come back after a week off and carry on its domination of the A-League, and it is looking to be a battle between the others to see who else will join the Sky Blues in the finals series.

Most of the teams in the league still have a chance of making the knockout phase of the season, so the next few weeks should be fascinating to see how the results go between some of the main contenders.
