Energetik’s surprisingly good start to the season has fallen apart slightly over the last few weeks. But round six gives the Minsk club a great chance to get some more points on the board.

Neman has struggled so far and has only managed the one win all season. The opponents have not even been of the highest caliber, so that would be a worry for a club that has never dropped out of the top flight of Belarusian soccer.

I’m not sure that the results Neman has produced this year warrant such confidence and would be looking at a draw or even an Energetik victory as a more likely outcome here. The odds for those two eventualities look far better value, in my opinion.

Neman Grodno may have been an ever-present in the Belarusian top league, but it has never really achieved anything of note. The closest it came to winning the league was way back in 2002 when it finished second after a playoff game with BATE Borisov. The way the team has started this year suggests that it will be a while yet before it can think of lifting silverware.

In fact, a drop down to the second tier for the first time in its history is looking far more likely. It is three games without a win now, with a defeat to Dinamo Minsk the result last weekend. With little in the way of goals, it could be another frustrating matchday for the hosts here.

Energetik, on the other hand, will be looking at this fixture to regain the form of the first few weeks of the season. Little was expected from one of Minsk’s smaller outfits, but three successive wins saw Energetik top the table, albeit briefly. A lot of that was down to the goals of Uzbekistan U23 international Jasurbek Yakhshiboev. If he can find his scoring boots again, then this could be another win for the visitors

The last two games have seen Energetik struggle to carve out chances of finding the net, though. Neman may not score many, but it is a team that doesn’t concede many, either. If Energetik does get the opportunity on Friday, then it will need to make sure that it takes its chances.

I was very impressed with the way that Energetik started the season, and although a slight dip in form was to be expected, I believe it can come back strongly once again. It may be a case of overachieving, or it could be the start of a concerted effort to push for the European places this year. Either way, Energetik should get back to winning ways.
