NBA Preseason Betting Guide for 2021

| October 3, 2021 7:17 am PDT

The NBA preseason is coming soon and we need to prepare for it before we place our bets. The first game is a showdown between the Lakers and the Nets on October 3rd at 3:30 PM ET.

Preseason betting has some extra spice to it, considering that teams don’t want to risk injury at this point in the season. Some players will get more opportunities than they are used to and could earn themselves more regular season playing time.

If you want to partake in the spicy action, be sure to check out our top NBA betting sites to place your bets.

Here is the 2021 preseason betting guide and what to look for.

Deepest NBA Rosters

These four teams have the most overall depth to their rosters.

  • Los Angeles Lakers
  • Brooklyn Nets
  • Miami Heat
  • New York Knicks

Which team will come out ahead of the odds during preseason?

Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers look to be one of the best teams entering this season, not only because of their star power, but their insane depth as well.

The Lakers went crazy this offseason and added a bunch of solid players to help LeBron James win another ring. The biggest addition was Russell Westbrook, but they also added some backup guys who are going to help out a ton with injuries and overall depth.

The Lakers added Kendrick Nunn, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Wayne Ellington, Rajon Rondo, Trevor Ariza, DeAndre Jordan, Kent Bazemore, and Malik Monk.

Since the Lakers have the oldest roster in the NBA, it is likely the older players won’t get much playing time in the preseason. They have plenty of established players who are going to know their role on the team, leaving a lot of opportunities for their younger guys.

I expect Talen Horton-Tucker (age 20) and Malik Monk (age 23) to carry the load in the preseason after the vets get their minutes in. This is one of the deepest rosters in the NBA and they are going to be starting their quest for another ring in the preseason.

If the chemistry works with Russell Westbrook, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Carmelo Anthony, they would be a nightmare against other teams in the preseason.

The Lakers are looking to be one of the safest teams to bet on for this year in the preseason.

Brooklyn Nets

The Nets are keeping up with the Lakers in terms of star power and depth. Here is a quick breakdown of their roster.

The Nets also have one of the deepest rosters in the NBA, which really highlights this year’s preseason opener. The Nets dealt with a multitude of injuries including Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden last year, so they might limit them even more in the preseason.

They also have other solid vets who will fill out their super team for 2021-22, but their preseason time is probably going to be limited as well.

That includes Blake Griffin, and new additions Lamarcus Aldridge and Paul Millsap.

The Nets have a solid supporting cast that consists of Patty Mills, Bruce Brown, Sekou Doumbouya, Nicolas Claxton, DeAndre’ Bembry, and Joe Harris.

The Nets and Lakers look to be favored in every preseason game besides the first one and are probably going to be extremely difficult to upset.

Miami Heat

The Miami Heat quietly added a good amount of talent this season and don’t seem to be getting a lot of attention.

The Miami Heat has arguably a better roster than they did in 2020, which is the year they went to the NBA Finals.

They added some solid firepower with Kyle Lowry, P.J Tucker, Markieff Morris, and Dewayne Dedmon. They also acquired Victor Oladipo at the trade deadline last year, but he is still recovering from his quad injury.

Head Coach Erik Spoelstra is among one of the best in the league and he knows how to get the most out of his players. The Heat should be a reliable team to bet on for the preseason.

New York Knicks

The Knicks also added and resigned some important players who are going to give their roster a solid boost this year. They look to be another reliable team to bet on for the preseason.

The Knicks added Kemba Walker, Evan Fournier, and resigned Derrick Rose.

I would expect their younger players to try and prove themselves in the preseason, which could make them a solid team to bet on.

Kevin Knox, Obi Toppin, and Immanuel Quickley will be the biggest part of the Knicks preseason.

NBA Preseason Injuries

Klay Thompson is still injured and Steve Kerr seemed to have pushed back his return date to January instead of December.

The Warriors will also be missing their 2nd overall draft pick from 2020, C James Wiseman. Wiseman will also be missing time in the regular season, so there is no way he plays in the preseason.

The Warriors probably won’t send Steph Curry out there for too long, since he hasn’t been the healthiest player in the past couple years either.

The Warriors are looking to be a struggling team in the preseason, which could make for an upset target if they are favored.

Some other big names who are going to be out for the preseason include Kawhi Leonard, Jamal Murray, Pascal Siakam, Patrick Williams, Coby White, T.J Warren, and Mitchell Robinson.

NBA Preseason Potential Upsets

With all of those bigger named players out, there is a ton of potential for upsets. Teams like the Clippers and Nuggets did well in the playoffs without their key players, but this isn’t the playoffs, it is the preseason.

Paul George won’t be playing close to 40 minutes, which means the Clippers are suspect to upsets in this preseason.

The Phoenix Suns could also be without Chris Paul (wrist surgery) and Devin Booker (health and safety protocols) could be sitting for the Suns, so they could be an upset target as well.

Tips for Betting on the NBA Preseason in 2021-22

The preseason is a risky time for bettors, but that doesn’t mean you should avoid it. A big thing to keep an eye out for is live betting.

It is likely that a superstar player like LeBron James will play for around 15-20 minutes in the first half and then sit out for the rest of the game. If the Lakers are up big, you may be able to get a solid live spread and hope for a comeback from their opponent.

A coach could choose to sit any player for any specific reason, which makes this a tough deal. That is why you need to know all about a team’s depth, injuries, and possibilities for an upset.
