Most Likely Gold Medal Winners at the Tokyo Olympics
The Olympic spirit suggests that the games are about participating, unity, and other noble ideas. In reality, most athletes are there to compete as hard as possible, which is understandable. Most of them spent their entire life preparing for this moment, and the audience loves a good fight too.
Some sports at the upcoming Olympics are hard to predict and include many potential medalists, while others are expected to be dominated by a clear favorite.
I share my predictions for the most likely gold medal winners at the 2020 Olympics. I’ve included both individual athletes and teams here. The goal is to give you a hand if you plan to bet on the Olympics with real money.
US Basketball Team
I feel obliged to begin with Team USA that is expected to win the basketball tournament. One could point at the FIBA World Cup 2019 and the poor performance as an argument against that.
However, the squad of the Americans is way stronger this time around. Just take a look at the players included in the two rosters.
|World Cup 2019 Roster||Tokyo Olympics Roster|
|Derrick White||Bam Adebayo|
|Donovan Mitchell||Bradley Beal|
|Joe Harris||Devin Booker|
|Marcus Smart||Kevin Durant|
|Harrison Barnes||Jerami Grant|
|Jaylen Brown||Draymond Green|
|Jayson Tatum||Jrue Holiday|
|Mason Plumlee||Zach LaVine|
|Myles Turner||Damian Lillard|
|Brook Lopez||Kevin Love|
|Khris Middleton||Khris Middleton|
|Kemba Walker||Jayson Tatum|
With all due respect to the guys from the 2019 roster, there were no true superstars in their prime (probably Kemba Walker aside), and most squad members were young. The current group of athletes includes players in the peak of their powers and a lot more leadership. The overall quality and the depth are insane, so I don’t see how any opponent could stop Team USA.
Another gold medal is on the cards, and anything else would be a complete shocker.
- Country: USA
- Sport: Artistic Gymnastics
- Age: 24
Many believe that Simone Biles is the greatest artistic gymnast to ever compete already, and she will have the chance to make her case even stronger in Tokyo.
The American has four gold medals from Rio, and she will be a threat in pretty much every event. Biles struggled slightly at the US Olympic Trials, but make no mistake; she will be at her best when it counts.
The question is not if Biles will win a gold medal at the 2020 Olympics; it’s about the number of titles she can take home. The 24-year-old is the favorite in the all-around individual battle, as well as the team event.
She is also expected to grab at least another gold in the other disciplines. If everything goes right, Biles could very well finish the games with more than three gold medals, and I don’t think anyone would be surprised.
She’s one of the many US athletes expected to win gold, and the country should easily finish on top of the medals table in Tokyo 2020.
- Country: USA
- Sport: Swimming
- Age: 24
Another athlete that should dominate the 2020 Olympics is Caeleb Dressel. The swimmer is trying to follow the footsteps of icons like Mark Spitz and Michael Phelps by shooting at the moon.
Many believe that Dressel will surely win the 100 meters freestyle, and the US relay is expected to fight for gold in the 4 X 100 meters too.
I don’t think that Dressel will come as close to Phelps and Spitz as some people believe, but he is certainly among the most likely gold medal winners at the 2020 Olympics.
- Country: UK
- Sport: Cycling
- Age: 29
Team United Kingdom will be very strong in several sports and cycling is certainly among them. Multiple athletes will be fighting for gold, but Laura Kenny stands out with her four titles from the previous two Olympic Games.
She won both the team pursuit and the omnium in 2012 and 2016. According to a recent interview, Kenny suffered from injuries in the build-up to the 2020 edition, and the delay helped her return to her best. Kenny is a fierce competitor that always rises to the occasion, and she’s young enough to deliver another strong performance in Tokyo. I expect at least one more gold medal for the British cyclist.
- Country: Canada
- Sport: Swimming
- Age: 25
Can anyone stop Kylie Masse on the road to the Olympic title in the 100 meters backstroke event? I think the answer is no. The Canadian earned a bronze medal in Rio, which catapulted her career.
Masse has been unstoppable, and I see her as one of the most likely gold winners in the 2020 Olympics.
- Country: France
- Sport: Judo
- Age: 32
Good luck facing Teddy Riner at the Olympics! The guy has been an absolute monster at the highest level for years now, winning two Olympic gold medals in 2012 and 2016, as well as eight World Championships and a bunch of other titles.
Riner is still 32, an excellent age for fighting sports, and he even plans to compete in the 2024 Olympics. I’m not sure if he will be a favorite then, but he certainly is now. It will be a huge surprise if anyone manages to beat the French judoka.
