MLB Teams That Need to be Active in the 2022 Free Agency

| November 10, 2021 12:21 pm PDT

The Atlanta Braves won the 2021 MLB World Series after a thrilling season. They overcame many obstacles and defeated some tough teams in order to win.

With the season ending on that note, we now enter the free agency period and offseason.

Just because the season is over does not mean that MLB teams can take the winter off. The Free Agency period can be just as important as a playoff matchup.

If you can land some big-name free agents in the offseason, they can help you win a lot of games and maybe even a World Series. If there are a lot of moving pieces in this free agency period, we can also see a shift in the 2022 World Series odds list.

Here are the teams that need to be very active in free agency in order to be competitive in the upcoming MLB season, and possibly win a World Series.

San Diego Padres

The Padres were a team that many thought would be able to at least make the postseason last year. That was not the case, as a big injury to Fernando Tatis seemed to be the dagger in their season.

Tatis missed 30+ games in 2021, but is still one of the finalists for the NL MVP award.

Maybe that was the wakeup call that they needed to be active in free agency this season. Their lineup could not hang with the Dodgers and Giants in 2021, and both of those teams should be solid in 2022 yet again.

The Padres must be way better from top to bottom and grabbing a couple solid players in free agency would be great for them.

OF Tommy Pham, RP Daniel Hudson, and RP Mark Melancon highlight the possible players who could be on the move this offseason. Hudson and Melancon are two very solid bullpen pitchers who are very valuable for competing teams. Pham is a steady outfielder as well and losing him will hurt their outfield depth.

The Padres core of Tatis, Machado, Snell, Darvish, and Musgrove are very solid for them. With the return of Mike Clevinger to the starting rotation, their starting pitching is looking very solid for 2022.

They also have some solid utility players who can help with the length of the MLB season, but they can use some outfield talent/depth.

I would also recommend some bullpen pitchers or another starter because they have some guys who have had injury problems recently.

This team has serious potential and is another team that should buy into the 2022 free agency market. It could give them the firepower needed to bring a World Series ring to San Diego.

BetOnline is giving the Padres +1600 odds to win the World Series next season, and they can cash if they have a solid offseason.

Houston Astros

The Astros have been a competitive team for the past couple years, cheating or not cheating. They made it all the way to the World Series before losing to the Braves.

To make it back or even win the 2022 World Series, they need to be active in free agency.

They have several important players becoming free agents this offseason and losing all of them could hurt them big time. The players they could potentially lose include SS Carlos Correa, SP Justin Verlander, SP Zack Grienke, RP Kendall Graveman, C Martin Maldonaldo, and RP Yimi Garcia.

Verlander missed the entirety of the 2021 season and only made one start in 2020. He has been recovering from Tommy John surgery and has been working his way back.

He has a decision to make regarding the qualifying offer (worth $19 million), so that will be a big part of the Astros offseason.

After seeing their young pitchers perform in the World Series, the Astros should try and re-sign Verlander if he does not accept the qualifying offer.

Their rookies and young pitchers were very inconsistent in the biggest games of the year, and they could have used their ace.

Carlos Correa is a big-name shortstop hitting the market as well as a good amount of other ones. Corey Seager, Javier Baez, Trevor Story, and other shortstops are also hitting the market.

Whoever signs the first contract could be setting the market for their position mates, as this shortstop free agent class is one of the best in recent memory.

If the Astros can’t resign these important players, their hopes for winning the World Series in 2022 will start to slim.

They are currently the second most favored team to win the 2022 World Series (via BetOnline), but that all can change for the worse or for the better with this offseason.

The Astros still have a strong core, but a strong supporting cast is needed to win a ring.

Toronto Blue Jays

If it weren’t for Shoehi Ohtani’s record breaking and historic season, Vladimir Guerrero would have been the AL MVP in 2021.

He is going to be an amazing player throughout his career, but the next step for him and the Blue Jays should be making the postseason.

The Blue Jays have a talented roster, but they are also in one of the toughest divisions in the entire MLB. That means they desperately need to add more firepower to have a chance to make the playoffs and put up a fight with the Rays, Red Sox, and Yankees.

Guerrero can’t do it himself, as Mike Trout is a perfect example of how good one player can be and still miss the postseason.

Some important players the Blue Jays might be losing in free agency include 2B Marcus Semien, OF Corey Dickerson, SP Robbie Ray, RP Kirby Yates, SP Steven Matz, and more.

Out of this group, Semien and Ray are players that the Blue Jays desperately need to resign for 2022 and possibly longer.

Semien played in every single game for the Blue Jays in 2021, registering 115 runs, 102 RBI, 45 home runs, and 131 wRC+. He had an incredible season in his first year with Toronto and the Blue Jays should reward him with another contract.

Semien, Guerrero, and Bichette were a very nice infield together in 2021 and make for a very solid core. Having those three players in your lineup gives your team a solid chance to produce runs.

Robbie Ray was another player to have a breakout season with the Jays. After spending 2015-20 with the Diamondbacks, Ray pitched to his career best ERA of 2.84 (1st in the American League) in his first season with Toronto.

He was also one of seven pitchers who pitched at least 190 innings, leading the pack with a 11.54 K/9, and a 90.1 LOB%.

He is entering the prime of his career and the Blue Jays would be smart to extend him for the next couple years or so.

If they opt to let him go to another team, their rotation will potentially be a weak spot for them in this upcoming season.

The Blue Jays have a chance to be a solid team behind Guerrero and Bichette, so they would be smart to build around them. They should grab multiple players with multi-year contracts and give their dynamic duo a solid supporting cast.

They are long shots to win the 2022 World Series at +1600, but they can be a realistic sleeper team starting right now in free agency.

Atlanta Braves

The Braves are coming off their World Series win, but they have a lot of work to do in the offseason.

A lot of their players they acquired at the trade deadline were impending free agents, so they will either have to look to re-sign them or look for replacements. If they let some of these players go, their hopes of repeating as champions will start to slim.

They are currently the fourth most favored team to win the 2022 World Series, but that is subject to change.

The 2021 Braves players who could leave in free agency include 1B Freddie Freeman, DH/OF Jorge Soler, OF Eddie Rosario, OF Joc Pederson, and more.

These players played a massive role for the Braves and were a big reason why they won the World Series. Resigning these players is probably a big goal of the Braves this offseason.

Freddie Freeman is the most important person that the Braves must bring back. Freddie is the heart and soul of their lineup and is a top tier player well deserving of a hefty extension.

If the Braves opt to let him go in free agency, their fans would be very upset, and it could hurt their playoff chances in a major way.

The return of outfielders Ronald Acuna and Marcell Ozuna next season means that one or more of their outfielders will be playing for another team in 2022.

With that being said, their outfield depth was a big reason why they won the World Series in 2021. It also looks like the DH will be coming to the NL, so another hitter won’t hurt this lineup.

San Francisco Giants

With the news of Buster Posey hanging up the cleats, the Giants have some work to do in order to repeat as regular season champs in 2021.

Posey was their franchise player for a while, so filling his void will be very difficult.

They do however have one of the best catching prospects in the MLB (Joey Bart, 16th ranked prospect on the MLB Pipeline Top 100), so they have a good head start there.

Posey is not the only player this team can lose in 2022. Kris Bryant came over from the Cubs at the trade deadline and he is heading into free agency himself. He can be a very good fit for this Giants team and should be worth one of those huge contracts.

The Giants could also lose Brandon Belt, Kevin Gausman, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood, and more in the offseason. Those players played major roles for the Giants in 2021 and losing them could make this team look vastly different.

The Giants weren’t supposed to be so good last season, but they were. It just proves that they have a knack for good free agent signings and this offseason is another opportunity for them to work their magic.

Maybe they let some players walk, or maybe they re-sign all of them.

They also have one of the best farm systems in the MLB, so if they land some free agents to some long contracts, they could end up having a very strong team for the next decade or so.

Nonetheless, this Giants team should try and be active this offseason to build the best team they possibly can. Having the best record in baseball is not the best, especially when you don’t follow it with a World Series win.

This Giants team should be hungry for more, starting right now. They won the most regular season games in 2021, but their odds have fallen all the way to +1800 for the World Series.

They can be a great value bet, especially if they can keep their roster intact or add some solid players.

Seattle Mariners

Another team with a lot of young talent is the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners have a solid number of top prospects that can be impactful players very soon.

They currently have 5 players in the MLB Pipeline Top 100, 4 of which are within the top 34. Not to mention former top prospect Jarred Kelenic is starting his young and very promising career.

With how good this team looks in their farm system and their young talent, they need to capitalize in free agency. Landing some solid players to help build around their young players would be the key to their future success.

They are at risk of losing Yusei Kikuchi, Kyle Seager, James Paxton, and more this offseason.

With those players being older, I wouldn’t be to upset for the Mariners to let them walk. Right now, they need players who are young and have a bunch of potential.

If they can land some big-name free agents and a solid group of veterans, this Mariners team can be very underrated as soon as next year.

They are a long shot to win the World Series at +4000, but anything is possible for this team.

The MLB 2022 Free Agency Period

This offseason can get wild. We have a lot of talented players heading into the free market and the MLB is seeing very active front offices than usual. Depending on who signs where, we can see the odds for certain bets shift around.

For example, if the Yankees were to land multiple big name players in free agency, they can jump to the top of the leaderboard of the 2022 World Series odds list.

We could have huge contracts going to certain players, not only those big-name shortstops. That position group will have a lot of impact on the MLB power rankings by the time free agency is finished.

We also have a list of players who need to make their big decisions in regard to their qualifying offers.

There should be a lot of movement in the offseason, and we could have a mix up of the odds for next season. This could be a very interesting free agency year, so buckle up for a wild ride.

If you think a certain team can survive the offseason or become a World Series contender, make sure you place you place your bets on the best MLB betting sites.
