A Look At Orlando Magic’s Coaching Staff for 2020-21

Orlando Magic Coaching Staff Analysis for the 2020-21 NBA Season

As John Hammond continues reshaping his roster heading into the 2020-21 campaign, the Orlando Magic coaching staff remains unchanged. Steve Clifford was hired in 2018 and got to handpick his own guys, and that’s where we’re at entering year three of the regime.

Take a look at Magic head coach, along with the rest of his workforce.

Steve Clifford – Head Coach

The 59-year-old former head coach in Charlotte has led Orlando to the playoffs in each of his first two seasons at the helm. The problem is the Magic have experienced quick first-round exits on both occasions (lost 4-1 in the opening round each year).

Simply “getting” to the playoffs won’t be enough if Clifford plans on receiving any sort of extension.

Mike Batiste – Assistant Coach

A former star in the Euro League, Mike Batiste is one of four Magic assistants who Steve Clifford brought with him from the Charlotte Hornets sidelines in 2018.

It’s possible that Batiste eventually leaves the NBA and takes an HC gig with Panathinaikos (Greece), but for now, his assignment is to assist Coach Clifford just outside of Disney World.

Tyrone Corbin – Assistant Coach

Immersed in the National Basketball Association since being drafted as a player in 1985, Tyrone Corbin is on his fourth stint as an assistant head coach. Worth noting, Corbin was appointed as the head coach of the Utah Jazz in 2011, holding that position before Utah decided to part ways in 2014.

Since then, Tyrone has served as an assistant in Sacramento (temporary interim HC) and Phoenix before being lured to Orlando by Clifford in 2018.

Pat Delany – Assistant Coach

After surfacing as a candidate for the Knicks head coaching job, Pat Delany will be back with the Magic as a direct assistant to Steve Clifford.

With that being said, Look for Delany’s name to hit the rumor mill next offseason when another head coaching carousel begins.

Steve Hetzel – Assistant Coach

Steve Hetzel has been assigned the mission of resurrecting Markelle Fultz.

According to sources at hoopshype.com, Hetzel has “been attached to Fultz’s hip” as he hopes to instill confidence into Markelle’s game.

Bruce Kreutzer – Assistant Coach

The 70-year-old former shooting consultant of the 76ers has been working alongside Steve Clifford since 2015.

If there’s someone Steve Hetzel can lean on to help Markelle Fultz get his stroke in order, Kreutzer is that guy.

Lionel Chalmers – Assistant Coach

Hired as the head video coordinator in 2018, Lionel Chalmers is slowly climbing up the food chain in Orlando.

Lionel is the cousin of Mario Chalmers, a former NBA point guard now playing in Greece.

Final Analysis of the Orlando Magic Coaching Staff

The pressure is on for the entire Orlando Magic coaching staff heading into 2021. If improvements aren’t made, it’s more than likely that the 2021-2022 campaign will be the final straw for Clifford and his crew.

Then again, if Markelle Fultz plays like an All-Star and the Magic win a playoff series, the ink comes out for some contract renewals.
