LoL World Championship 2020 Group D Preview

LoL Worlds Main Event 2020 Group D

The League of Legends Worlds 2020 Main Event starts soon and I’m sure that the games in Group D will be among the most anticipated early on. The big favorite for the title Top Esports is here, in the company of another Asian giant like DRX.

FlyQuest is the third member of the group and we expect another team from the Play-In stage. Based on the strength of the contestants there and the regional rules of the LoL Words, MAD Lions is the most likely squad to join to show, so it’s going to be epic.

We will have the chance to watch some of the best mid players in the world fight each other, so the action is guaranteed.

I share my expectations for each team in this LoL Worlds 2020 Group D preview and it all culminates in my predictions for their chances to progress.

Before I start, let me remind you how the format works real quick. The four teams play each other in the round-robin system twice and each match is in the best-of-one format. The top two contestants progress to the Main Event Playoffs.

Top Esports

The last two LoL Worlds champions were from China and no one will be shocked if the next one is from the same country. Top Esports is the most likely winner, according to the betting odds of the leading online sportsbooks.

That’s hardly a shocker since the squad won the LPL Summer 2020 which is by far the strongest regional competition out there. Beating opponents like JD Gaming, Sunning, and the other superteams from China is a strong testimony to the talent of Top Esports.

The team has some of the top LoL players in the world in every position and every member of the roster is exceptional from a mechanical standpoint. Add the strong coordination and the good variety of champions to the mix and it becomes hard to find a weakness.

Top Esports is a dangerous opponent that could go all the way and I only see one problem here. The pressure to perform could get to the head of anyone, so that might be a bit of an issue later on.

I don’t think that the Chinese giant can go out in the group stages, though, so Top Esports should be one of the teams that will progress to the knockouts.

The current roster of DRC or formerly DragonX was assembled at the end of 2019 with one simple task in mind – become the best League of Legends team in the world! The squad had a decent run and finished third in the LCK 2020 Spring and then went one step further in the summer edition.

The DRX members are relatively young, but they have some of the best coaches out there and exceptional game awareness.

Chovy is one of the most dominant mid laners in the world and he’s the guy who sets the pace for his side. His matchup against knight from Top Esports is mouthwatering and the outcome will be crucial for the clash.

I believe that that DRX is certainly better than FlyQuest and every team that could qualify through the Play-In, even MAD Lions. The Koreans should even give Top Esports a good fight, so I expect them to qualify for the next stage of the League of Legends World Championship 2020.

I’m sure that FlyQuest hoped for a better draw and the chances of the team to go through are not very high. We saw some excellent games in the LCS Summer Split, especially in the finals against Team SoloMid, but facing two of the best Asian times won’t be fun.

On top of that, MAD Lions is likely to be the fourth team in Group D and the Europeans are also stronger than FlyQuest. I don’t see how the squad could qualify for the playoffs and every win in the opening stage will be a small miracle.

LoL Worlds 2020 Group D Predictions

There’s little doubt that DRX and Top Esports are the big favorites in this Group D. The two Asian teams have the more talented rosters than FlyQuest and are used to facing top-tier LoL opponents all the time because of how strong their regional tournaments are.

The level is simply not the same in North America, so FlyQuest doesn’t stand a chance. I would say that MAD Lions is more likely to upset the odds, but the team has to win a place in the Main Event first.

That leaves me with little choice, so I have to back the favorites. They are too good to miss on the playoffs of the LoL 2020 Worlds.

  • Top Esports to qualify
  • DRX to qualify

Can’t wait to see who becomes the next LoL world champion. To be honest, I believe, that Team Liquid should win. They didn’t make it to the previous tournaments and they won’t miss their chance this time.
