LoL World Championship 2020 Group C Preview

| September 20, 2020 2:11 am PDT

Many believe that Group C of the LoL Worlds 2020 Main Event is the hardest to predict. It seems like the teams there are on a similar level which could bring us plenty of close games over the course of the tournament.

Fnatic, Gen.G, and Team Solo Mid all have talented squads that will be eager to qualify for the knockouts of the biggest League of Legends competition in the world. On top of that, there is a high probability that LGD Gaming joins the show after the Play-Ins.

I share my thoughts on the chances of each team to progress to the knockouts in this LoL Worlds Group C preview. The post includes my analysis of every organization and predictions.

In theory, we only know three of the teams for sure and the fourth one is not clear yet. However, if LGD Gaming qualifies for the Main Event, it will join Group C because of the regional rules. Since I view the Chinese side as the best in the Play-Ins, I will include my impressions from LGD as well.

And finally, let me remind you that each group of the LoL World Championship consists of four teams that face each other twice in a round-robin format. The best two then proceed to the knockouts of the competition.

Team SoloMid

Many believe that Team SoloMid is the best LoL squad from North America, but that wasn’t the case earlier in 2020. The seven-time LCS winners finished fifth in the regular season and then only improved to the fourth place in the Playoffs.

A change was required and that’s when Spica and Doublelift joined the roster. The duo has been a success and TSM won the summer edition of LCS, earning a place in the 2020 LoL Worlds Main Event.

I believe that the draw was fair to the squad. There were better teams than Fnatic in Pool 2, but Gen.G might be the strongest one from Pool 3. On top of that, Group C is likely to include the LDG which is the best squad from the Play-Ins.

There will be no easy games for TSM, but there are no unbeatable opponents either. One of the keys to success will be the performance of Bjergsen in the middle lane. Many believe his best years behind him, but I’m not so sure.

If the Dane can rise to the occasion, TSM has a chance of going through to the LoL Worlds 2020 Playoffs.

Fnatic

I’m sure that Fnatic loved the fact that they got TSM from Pool 1, but their reaction to Gen.G’s addition to the group tells you everything you need to know.

The European team will be in a tough spot and going through to the next stage won’t be an easy task, especially if LGD joins the show after the Play-Ins. I would argue that Fnatic might the least talented team in Group C.

On the other hand, the roster has been the same for what seems like forever. The guys have excellent chemistry and their experience could help them overcome the mechanical disadvantages.

I believe that Fnatic will certainly be involved in the fight for the knockouts and it won’t be a shock if the team comes out on top.

Gen.G

If there is one team in Group C that is happy with the draw, it must be Gen.G. The Koreans got arguably the weakest teams from Pool 1 and 2, so they are the favorites to progress to the knockouts.

The only downside is once again the threat of LDG, but I’m sure that Gen.G can live with that.

The organization had to go through major roster changes at the end of 2019 after suffering a weak season. The new guys have done well in 2020 and they booked a place in the Worlds after destroying T1 in the LCK 2020 Regional Finals.

I believe that Gen.G is the most talented team in this group and should be able to qualify for the next phase. And yet, every mistake could be fatal in such a company, so staying consistent will be the key to success.

LoL Worlds 2020 Group C Predictions

I expect Group C to produce some of the closest and most dramatic games in the early stage of the 2020 LoL Worlds. All three teams have a chance to progress further and I expect another contender from the Play-In.

I just can’t imagine how LDG Gaming would fail to reach the Main Event and that group is the only option for the team. That would make the task even harder for the other organizations.

I would say that Gen.G and LDG are more talented than the opposition, while TSM and Fnatic have well-rounded rosters and excellent strategy. It’s going to come down to the wire, but I believe that the two Asian teams should be able to progress when it’s all said and done.

  • Gen.G to qualify
  • LDG Gaming to qualify
