LoL World Championship 2020 Group B Preview

If you are looking for the most likely winner of the upcoming LoL Words 2020 Main Event, Group B is probably the best place to check. We have DAMWON Gaming and JD Gaming here, two of the strongest League of Legends teams in the competition.

The third member of the group is Rogue and we are expecting another squad from the Play-Ins. Based on the rules of the tournament, we know for sure that it won’t be LGD Gaming or MAD Lions, two of the big favorites to make it. That leaves a team from the minor regions or Team Liquid.

I don’t think that DAMWON or JDG are afraid of any of them, but more about that later. Before I start my Group B preview, let me clarify the rules once again. There will be four teams facing each other twice in a round-robin format. The best two then proceed to the knockouts.

With that in mind, let’s move on to my Group B analysis and predictions.

South Korea is the most successful country in the history of the League of Legends World Championship with five titles and that number might grow in 2020. One of the teams that could bring the next trophy is DAMWON Gaming.

After a rather mediocre performance in the LCK 2020 Spring, the squad returned stronger than ever to win the summer edition of the league. DAMWON looked unstoppable and even destroyed DRX by 3-0 in the Playoffs.

It looks like the guys have hit top form when it matters the most and they are among the biggest favorites for the championship. The roster is full of talent from top to bottom and most of the members have been playing together for several years.

DAMWON’s style revolves around team fighting and the side has one of the best supports in the world in BeryL. I don’t see how the team could miss on the LoL Words 2020 Playoffs and the only question is if it can beat JDG for the top spot.

One could argue that the talent and mechanical ability of JD Gaming’s squad are not on the same level as DAMWON, but the team is one of the best in the world in terms of strategy and game awareness.

That’s not a surprise for a roster of world-class players that have been together for a year or so. The superstar here once again is the support. LvMao’s ability to read the game and enable his teammates is sublime and the key to success.

We saw that in the LPL this year where JD Gaming won in the spring and finished second in the summer, after an epic clash against Top Esports in a final that went the distance.

I don’t see how JDG could finish third or lower in this group, no matter which team qualifies from the Play-In. It’s either first or second, so a place in the playoffs looks certain for one of the top Chinese LoL Squads.

I really feel for Rogue because the European team is solid and probably would’ve had a chance to qualify in some of the other groups. On the other hand, that’s a direct result from the third place in the LEC Summer Playoffs.

A better performance there would’ve meant a higher pool and easier opponents in the LoL Worlds group stage. As it stands, I don’t see how Rogue could qualify for the knockouts of the tournament.

The team is one of the strongest in Europe and showed immense growth in the latest LEC, but the Chinese giants are simply on another level. Even if Rogue wins a game against one of the favorites, it won’t be enough.

The good news is that the team should be able to handle whatever opponent qualifies from the Play-Ins.

Before I share my prediction for Group B of the LoL Words, let’s speculate a bit about the Play-Ins. We know that Team Liquid or one of the teams from the minor regions will join the group because of the tournament rules.

I don’t think that the North Americans have recovered from their recent struggles to an extent that would make them competitive against the two Asian giants and they should even be the underdog against Rogue, in my opinion.

The other potential candidates don’t seem capable of moving the needle either, so the final member of the group doesn’t matter much.

I expect to see DAWMON and JDG through in all cases, while Rogue is likely going to finish in the third position.

I don’t think I’ve shocked anyone with my League of Legends World Championship Group B preview and predictions, but the Asian sides in this one are just too strong. I won’t be surprised if one of them goes on to win the title.
