LoL World Championship 2020 Group A Preview
The LoL Worlds 2020 is about to start soon and we’ll have the chance to watch the top teams fight for the ultimate prize. They have to go through the group stages first, though, and that won’t be an easy task.
Many believe that Group A is the weakest in the competition and it won’t produce the eventual champion. I’m sure that the teams in it will be more than happy to embrace the underdog role and prove everyone wrong.
They have to reach the knockouts first, though, and I share my thoughts on the chances of each contestant in this LoL Words 2020 Group A preview. The post concludes with my predictions and before we start, let me remind you of the main details about the format.
Four teams face each other using the double round-robin system and every match is in the best-of-one format. The top two progress to the knockouts.
At this point, we know only three of the teams and the fourth one will be clear after the Play-Ins are over. And yet, because of the regional rules, we know for a fact that it has to be Team Liquid or one of the squads from the smaller regions.
There’s a reason why G2 Esports was part of pool one before the draw for the LoL Worlds 2020 Main Event. The team struggled early on this year but found some form when it matters the most and won the LEC Summer Playoffs in a dominant fashion, defeating Fnatic by 3-0 in the final.
That comes on top of another victory in the spring edition of the tournament and it’s clear that G2 Esports is the best Europe has to offer to the League of Legends competitive scene.
The roster of the organization has been pretty much the same for 2 years now and every single member has the talent and experience required to win the LoL Worlds.
G2 came really close last year when the side reached the final before losing against FunPlusPhoenix. I expect another deep run in 2020, but the top Asian teams might be too strong once again.
That’s a problem for the late stages of the tournament, though, and I believe that G2 Esports should be able to win Group A or at least finish second.
The Chinese competitive LoL scene is fierce and every team that makes it to the Worlds can be expected to challenge for the title. Sunning finished third in the LPL Summer Playoffs and the destroyed the likes LGD and Invictus Gaming in the Regional Finals to book a place in the Worlds Main Event.
That says enough about the team’s credentials and talent. The roster has been largely the same for ages, with one addition from the start of 2020, so the cohesion won’t be a problem.
Sunning has registered victories over some of the biggest favorites for the Worlds this year and I expect no fear in the squad. The two games against G2 Esports might be the key to the top spot because Machi is not on the same level.
The only potential could come from the Play-Ins. I believe that Team Liquid would make the battle for the playoffs way more interesting. If one of the organizations from the smaller regions makes it and is sent in Group A, G2 and Sunning should comfortably progress to the knockouts.
Many believe that Machi Esports has no chance of qualifying further and that’s excellent news for the Taiwanese team. There are no huge expectations to succeed, so that means no pressure either.
One of the reasons for that is the relatively weak performance in the first stage of the PCS 2020 Summer that saw Machi finish fourth in the standings. The team improved dramatically in the playoffs to win the tournament and qualify for the Worlds.
Not bad from a roster that was only formed at the start of this year. I believe that the underdog tag could help Machi win some games, but I don’t see how the team qualify for the knockouts. The side simply is not on the same level as G2 Esports and Suning in terms of experience and talent.
Machi likely won’t be in the fight for the next stage for too long, but the team is dangerous enough to screw some of the favorites if they are not careful.
LoL Worlds Group A Predictions
Based on the information we have so far, G2 Esports and Sunning are the most likely teams for the top 2 places in Group A of the League of Legends World Championship 2020.
They have the talent and pedigree to progress to the next stage and while Machi can be dangerous, the lack of consistency and experience on such level will be a problem.
The big question mark at this point is obviously related to the Play-Ins. I believe that LGD Gaming and MAD Lions will make it to the Main Event and both can’t be in Group A. The other favorite is Team Liquid and it has to be the Americans or a squad from the smaller regions.
I don’t think that any of the latter could stop Sunning and G2, but Liquid might be a problem. If the North American organization becomes part of Group A, it should be a three-way battle. I still expect to see the favorites through, but it could be close.
- G2 Esports to qualify
- Sunning to qualify
