Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors vs. Suwon Samsung Bluewings K-League 1

The new K-League 1 season kicks off on Friday as reigning champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors welcome Suwon Samsung Bluewings to the impressive Jeonju World Cup Stadium.

It promises to be an exciting year in South Korea, and it will be interesting to see whether Jeonbuk can go on to win an unprecedented fourth consecutive league title.

I have some thoughts on this match, and I’ve put together a betting preview, complete with my Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors vs. Suwon Samsung Bluewings prediction, below.

Jeonbuk vs. Suwon Odds

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors to Win-138
The Draw+292
Suwon Samsung Bluewings to Win+370

Unsurprisingly, BetOnline has made Jeonbuk the favorite to start the campaign in the way it means to go on and take all three points here. Suwon didn’t have the best of times last season so will want to get off to the best possible start too, but this is a tough fixture at any time of the season. The odds look about right to me, even if Jeonbuk will be fielding a number of new arrivals.

Match Preview

The climax to last season in K-League 1 was almost unbearable as Jeonbuk won the league by a single goal from main rivals Ulsan Hyundai. The Green Warriors were definitely the best team in the country, however, and will be the ones to beat once again in 2020.

Although there have been some departures from the club, new South African striker Lars Veldwijk will want to make an immediate impact, and he will be ably assisted by creative playmaker Kim Bo-kyung, who has returned to the club after playing on loan at Ulsan last year.

If Suwon can stop the attacking moves from Jeonbuk, then it might stand a chance here. But that is a big “if.” Last season was a major disappointment for the Bluewings as it failed to make the top six and eventually finished down in eighth. There have been a number of top players leaving the club as well, so there is no guarantee that Suwon can do any better this year.

K-League 1 top goal scorer Adam Taggart returns, however, and it will be his ability to find the net that might just be able to give Suwon a chance this year and in this game. Jeonbuk is the favorite to win the league again, though, so this is the most difficult first game possible for the Bluewings.

Jeonbuk vs. Suwon Pick

  • Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors to Win

With players such as striker Dejan Damjanovic leaving for Daegu FC and Jeon Se-jin fulfilling his military service at Sangju Sangmu this season, Suwon could struggle to reclaim former glories. There are a few interesting newcomers to the club, but I don’t think they will be a match for the existing players at Jeonbuk, as well as the exciting talent of Kim Bo-kyung coming into the side. Jeonbuk should pick up where it left off last year and take all three points here.
