It must be the admittedly woeful recent form shown by Slutsk that has persuaded MyBookie to price this one so closely, although Gorodeya has been terrible for the majority of the season, too. Even with Slutsk’s recent inability to win a game, I would still have its odds considerably shorter than this and think backing the away team here is probably the way to go.

Gorodeya hasn’t won a single game since the middle of April, but last week’s showing was probably a new low for the club. Smolevichi had not won a game all season but was still able to put four past the Gorodeya keeper in an embarrassing thrashing for this week’s home side.

That result was the worst all season for Gorodeya, and there must now be a question of whether it can do anything to pull itself further up the table and escape a relegation battle. Smolevichi winning also closed the gap between the two and brought the automatic drop starkly into view.

It also means that Slutsk might go into a game actually believing it can win a game again. For a while earlier in the year, there was feeling that BATE’s dominance — and Dynamo Brest’s poor start to the season — might let one of the smaller clubs in at the top. Slutsk filled the void and led the table for a time.

But things have gone sharply downhill in the last month in which Slutsk has picked up just two points from a possible fifteen. The club now sits in sixth, ten points off the top and six from even a European qualification place. This game seems like the perfect opportunity to bounce back into winning ways.

Slutsk might not be playing very well at the moment, but Gorodeya is in a really bad way. There have been no wins at all in the last seven games, and only three have those have even brought in a point to the cause. One of the teams has to have a better day this weekend, and I think it will be Slutsk.
