Two sides in dire need of a win meet on Sunday as Gangwon entertains promoted Gwangju.
Neither club has won a league game since the middle of June, and they also both needed extra time to see off lower-league opposition in the FA Cup in the middle of last week. I break down the odds below, then dive into my Gangwon vs. Gwangju prediction and betting pick.
Gangwon vs. Gwangju Odds
Gangwon to Win+101
Gwangju to Win+279
The home side is handed the favorite tag by BetOnline for Sunday’s game, but it seems as though it is purely because the bookmaker believes that Gwangju’s miserable run of form is more likely to continue, as both teams have looked very ordinary over the last few weeks. That assessment is probably fair, but a bet on the draw might be worth a go as well.
In the early weeks of the season, much was being said about the style of “Byung-soo ball” shown by Gangwon, even if the points were not rolling in. A few wins in the following weeks suggested that this was a club that might be able to challenge at the top. But things have gone very wrong more recently, and Gangwon comes into this one on the back of four consecutive league defeats.
It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what has gone wrong for Gangwon. The free-flowing soccer has continued to be very nice to watch, but the points have not been as forthcoming. The caliber of opponents had been tough, but last weekend’s defeat to Busan was a surprise.
Now Gangwon really needs to beat a Gwangju side that has also struggled in the last few weeks and is finding the top tier difficult after winning K League 2 last season. Felipe has started to score a few goals now, at least, but a run of victories would now be more than ideal for the Yellows.
This would not seem to be an easy way to start that, but even a point away from home would be seen as a positive. The way Incheon is becoming adrift at the bottom of the league — and with Sangju Sangmu’s relegation fate already decided — the rest of the clubs near the bottom can afford to drop a few points this season.
Gangwon vs. Gwangju Prediction and Pick
Gangwon to Win
Nothing has really been going right for Gangwon recently, and even the exciting brand of soccer displayed by the team has not been successful. But I think that this game might be a good opportunity for Kim Byung-soo’s side to pick up a much-needed victory and start thinking about climbing the league once again.
