Gangwon FC vs. FC Seoul K-League 1

Two clubs that fell away at the end of last season meet on the opening weekend of the new K-League 1 campaign on Sunday as Gangwon hosts FC Seoul.

It was a cruel spate of injuries that slowed Gangwon’s progress, while a dip in form due to a lack of midfield talent put paid to FC Seoul’s dreams of breaking into the top two spots last year. This should be an enthralling game between two good sides, and I’ve laid out my Gangwon FC vs. FC Seoul prediction below.

Gangwon FC vs. FC Seoul Latest Odds

Gangwon FC to Win+184
The Draw+240
FC Seoul to Win+150

For two fairly even teams, it is a little bit surprising that BetOnline has not made Gangwon a narrow favorite to win this one, especially at home. FC Seoul is undoubtedly a very good team, but I’m not sure it should really be considered more likely to come away from here with all three points.

Match Preview

It was another sixth-place finish for Gangwon last year, but manager Kim Byung-soo will be looking for his team to progress this season and push for one of the AFC Champions League spots. Having a number of players back from injury will be vital to the chances of the Bears to improve, but whoever is on the pitch, the style of soccer is sure to be as attractive as ever.

Kim Ji-hyun should also be back from injury and looking to impress once again after picking up the Young Player of the Year Award last season. If Gangwon can keep its players healthy and win some early points, there might be the chance of this club challenging for honors.

If Gangwon is to succeed this year, then it will need to be beating clubs such as FC Seoul. In many ways, these two sides have the same aspirations for the season ahead and will look to returning players to fulfill those goals. Brazilian striker Adriano is one that FC Seoul will be relying on to score the goals that keeps it in the upper reaches of the division.

With Aleksandar Pesic remaining at the club, FC Seoul has a fearsome frontline that might be able to spur the rest of the team to new heights. There are a number of additions to what was a threadbare midfield as well, so the future is looking bright for FC Seoul.

Gangwon FC vs. FC Seoul Pick

  • The Draw

This game could go either way if the truth were told. It seems just as likely to me that Gangwon kicks off the start of the season with a win as it would be for FC Seoul to pick up the points here. That is why the draw seems the right way to go — especially with the odds looking more favorable for that outcome than a win for either side.
