Tampa Bay Downs Picks 5/1

Tampa Bay Downs has a lineup of eight races on both dirt and turf scheduled for Friday, May 1, 2020.

Forecast in Tampa Bay for Friday calls for nothing but blue skies, temps in the mid-70s, zero chance of rain, and winds at a mild 10 mph.

I take a look below at the three richest turf races on the card for May 1, but be sure to check our list of horse racing betting sites for the full lineup of Tampa Bay Downs races, entries, odds, and wager options.

My Tampa Bay Downs picks and tips for selected races are below. Post time for the first race on Friday, May 1, 2020, is 12:24 PM (EDT).

  • Lion Charmer, A Suarez, 5/1
  • Channeledslongshot, R Mena, 20/1
  • California Sun, SCRATCHED
  • Hold the Spice, D P Butler, 15/1
  • Taos, S Camacho, 9/5
  • Drillomatic, D Centeno, 7/2
  • Hubba Bubba, W A Garcia, 15/1
  • Lord Dragon, A A Gallardo, 4/1

Race 3 Prediction and Pick

It’s hard to find a better horse-jockey combination than the 9/5 favorite, Taos, ridden by Samy Camacho. Hard, but not impossible. I like the second-favored horse in this match, Drillomatic, ridden by veteran jockey Daniel Centeno, at 7/2. Drillomatic has a better earnings record than Taos.

Race 3 Tip

At 15/1, Hubba Bubba ridden by Walter Garcia is the one to watch. He has the same starts record as the third-favorite, and coming out of the starting gate among the favorites might just inspire this colt to success.

Pick
  • Drillomatic
    7/2

RACE 7

  • Post Time: 3:27 PM
  • Purse: $16,000
  • Type: CLAIMING
  • Distance: 1 mile and 40 yards (dirt)
  • Conditions: For Fillies And Mares Four Years Old And Upward. If deemed inadvisable by management to run this race over the turf course, it will be run on the main track at One Mile and Forty Yards

Race 7 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • Callie California, S Camacho, 10/1
  • Igottawhiteface, D Centeno, 4/1
  • Alydarius, SCRATCHED
  • Viva Forever, D P Butler, 6/1
  • Colonels Daughter, A Suarez, 5/1
  • Barrel of Destiny, SCRATCHED
  • Haniel, SCRATCHED
  • Better Yet, H Villa-Gomez, 8/1
  • Cape Laa Di Da, SCRATCHED
  • Fun Paddy, SCRATCHED
  • Shes Dynomite, S Camacho, 7/2
  • Ashley’s Rose, R Mena, 20/1
  • Little Code, SCRATCHED
  • Marmalade, A A Gallardo, 9/2

Race 7 Prediction and Pick

A move to dirt and a number of scratches brings my favorite in this race out of the “also eligibles” into the fray. I like the seven-year-old, ridden by Antonio Gallardo, at 9/2. Marmalade has had an impressive career so far, with 35 finishes in the money (16 of those wins) in 52 career starts.

Race 7 Tip

Not the longest odds, but at 6/1, a win by six-year-old mare Viva Forever ridden by veteran jockey Dean Butler would still be satisfying. Viva Forever has more career starts (37) than any of her competition—and 21 of those were money finishes, with 11 wins among them.

Pick
  • Marmalade
    9/2

RACE 8

  • Post Time: 4 PM
  • Purse: $20,000
  • Type: ALLOWANCE
  • Distance: 1 mile and 40 yards (dirt)
  • Conditions: For Fillies And Mares Four Years Old And Upward Which Have Never Won A Race Other Than Maiden, Claiming, Or Starter Or Which Have Never Won Two Races. If deemed inadvisable by management to run this race over the turf course, it will be run on the main track at One Mile and Forty Yards

Race 8 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • Agi’s Cait, H Hernandez, 6/1
  • Foggy Flight, T B Mejia, 20/1
  • Sweetly Maid, SCRATCHED
  • Stormy D, SCRATCHED
  • Marnie Girl, W A Garcia, 10/1
  • Designing, D Centeno, 8/1
  • Mahkato, W Martinez, 12/1
  • Connectivity, S Spieth, 5/2
  • Venetian Princess, A Suarez, 12/1
  • Flighty Almighty, SCRATCHED
  • Be Nimble, A Santos, 8/1
  • Fashion’s Star, SCRATCHED
  • Peaceful Feeling, SCRATCHED
  • Music of Life, SCRATCHED

Race 8 Prediction and Pick

I believe the 5/2 favorite, Connectivity, ridden by Scott Spieth, will cross the finish line first. Connectivity’s career records speak for themselves: money in six of nine career starts, three of those wins.

Race 8 Tip

None of the thoroughbreds running at longer moneyline odds here impress enough to risk two bucks, so save your money; tomorrow’s another day.

Pick
  • Connectivity
    5/2
