Post time for the first race at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, May 2, 2020 is 12:45 PM (EDT).

My picks and tips for the races are below.

RACE 9 – Honey Ryder Stakes

  • Post Time: 4:53 PM
  • Purse: $75,000
  • Type: STAKES
  • Distance 1-1/16 miles (turf, rail at 96 feet)
  • Fillies, Three Years Old. If deemed inadvisable to run this race over the turf course, it will be run on the main track at One Mile and One Sixteenth.

Race 9 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • 1 Envoutante, D Davis, 8/5
  • 2 Highland Glory, L Saez, 9/2
  • 3 Mimina’s Team, E J Zayas, 6/1
  • 4 Micheline, J Bravo, 15/1
  • 5 Onyx, M A Vasquez, 20/1
  • 6 Stunning Sky, T Gaffalione, 15/1
  • 7 La Rusia, H I Berrios, 30/1
  • 8 Diamonds Are A, N Juarez, 30/1
  • 9 Astoria Kitten, E Jaramillo, 12/1
  • 10 Ivyetsu, C Landeros, 12/1
  • 11 Bajan Girl, Rajiv Maragh, 15/1
  • 12 Seducer, I Ortiz, Jr., 6/1

Race 9 Prediction and Pick

Envoutante, in the pole position, is the favorite in this race at 8/5. This filly hasn’t had more than three career starts, and yeah, she’s moneyed in all of them. But I like the second-favorite in this race, Highland Glory, with Luis Saez aboard. Highland Glory has four career starts, with three in the money, but two of those have been firsts. Advantage: Highland Glory.

Race 9 Tip

A real longshot here at 20/1, Onyx hasn’t won all of her six career starts, but she hasn’t settled for any but first place in three of them. Let’s hope veteran jockey Miguel Vasquez helps Onyx maintain her high standards.

Pick
  • Highland Glory
    9/2

RACE 10 – Big Drama Stakes

  • Post Time: 5:25 PM
  • Purse: $100,000
  • Type: STAKES
  • Distance: 7 furlongs
  • Florida-Bred Three Year Olds And Upward.

Race 10 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • 1 With Verve, M A Vasquez, (SCRATCHED)
  • 2 Last Judgment, T Gaffalione, 9/2
  • 3 Network Effect, I Ortiz, Jr., 2/1
  • 4 Garter and Tie, E Jaramillo, 12/1
  • 5 Red Crescent, N Juarez, 6/1
  • 6 He Hate Me, L Saez, 5/2
  • 7 Noble Drama, Joe Bravo, 8/1
  • 8 Royal Squeeze, E J Zayas, 10/1

Race 10 Prediction and Pick

The four-year-old colt Network Effect is the favorite in this race at 2/1. To be honest, I tried several of the entries on for size, playing with their numbers, scoping workouts, etc., only to find at the end that I couldn’t argue against the moneyline here. So it’s Network Effect, with Irad Ortiz, Jr. aboard.

Race 10 Tip

Another 20/1 longshot has a chance in this race: With Verve, ridden by Miguel Vasquez. The pole position certainly helps, but so does the veteran piloting. Oh, and this three-year-old gelding has moneyed in five of his eight career starts—and won in four.

Pick
  • Network Effect
    2/1

RACE 11 – English Channel Stakes

  • Post Time: 5:57 PM
  • Purse: $75,000
  • Type: STAKES
  • Distance: 1-1/16 miles (turf, rail at 96 feet)
  • Three Year Olds. If deemed inadvisable to run this race over the turf course, it will be run on the main track at One Mile and One Sixteenth.

Race 11 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • 1 Express Pharoah, L Reyes, 20/1
  • 2 Justinthenickotime, E Jaramillo, 20/1
  • 3 Doc Boy, J Bravo, 12/1
  • 4 Gufo, I Ortiz, Jr., 3/1
  • 5 Buy Me Candy, C Landeros, SCRATCHED
  • 6 Summer to Remember, L Saez, 9/2
  • 7 South Bend, M A Vasquez, 4/1
  • 8 Proven Strategies, D Davis, 6/1
  • 9 Don Juan Kitten, T Gaffalione, 15/1
  • 10 Island Commish, Victor Lebron, 8/1
  • 11 Fame to Famous, S Gonzalez, 30/1
  • 12 Ever Dangerous, E J Zayas, 10/1

Race 11 Prediction and Pick

Despite the presence of any number of star jockeys and trainers with horses in this race, I’m going with South Bend, the third-favored horse at 4/1. Piloted in this race by veteran jockey Miguel Vasquez, South Bend has eight career starts, six money finishes in the money (three of those wins).

Race 11 Tip

Not a huge longshot here, but 8/1 moneyline odds on Island Commish belies the solid career this colt has had—try six starts, five money finishes, four of them wins on for size. Throw in veteran jockey Victor Lebron Lopez and his own record for wins & earnings, and well—you’re welcome.

Pick
  • South Bend
    4/1
