Free Horse Racing Picks for Oaklawn Races on Friday, April 17, 2020

Oaklawn continues its “Racing Festival of the South” this Friday, April 17, 2020, with some of the richest races in the US, including the Rainbow Miss Stakes and, of course, the Rainbow Stakes.

I’ll take a look at the field for each of these stakes races and more, but let’s have a look at the weather forecast first.

Predictions for Oaklawn in Hot Springs, Arkansas, for April 17 say temps will be in the mid-60s, with scattered thunderstorms (60% chance of precipitation) and mild winds. With the likelihood of rain, it’s possible we’ll see some surprises at the finish line.

By the way, be sure to check out the entire list of races and entries at one of our recommended horse racing betting sites.

The first of my Oaklawn picks for today is on race 5.

RACE 5 (Rainbow Miss Stakes)

  • Post Time: 3:06 PM
  • Purse: $100,000
  • Type: STAKES
  • Distance: 6 furlongs
  • Conditions: For Fillies, Three Year Olds Which Were Bred in Arkansas and Qualify Under Rules Governing Same

Race 5 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • Hissy Missy, A Birzer, 20/1
  • The Mary Rose, M Garcia, 3/1
  • Julie Arkansas, K E Bedford, 20/1
  • Lucky Every Day, D Cohen, 15/1
  • Choctaw Charlie, J Rosario, 7/2
  • Proud Victoria, R Santana Jr., 5/2
  • Get One More, L S Quinonez, 8/1
  • Sekani, D Cannon, 3/1

Race 5 Prediction and Pick

Everybody seems to like Proud Victoria, ridden by Ricardo Santa Jr., but my money is on Choctaw Charlie at 7/2, mostly because Joel Rosario is riding her, and Rosario has the better win record.

Pick
  • Choctaw Charlie
    7/2

RACE 8

  • Post Time: 4:38 PM
  • Purse: $61,000
  • Type: ALLOWANCE OPTIONAL CLAIMING
  • Distance: 6 furlongs
  • Conditions: For Four Year Olds and Upward Which Have Not Won $40,000 Other Than Maiden, Claiming, Starter, or State Bred Since October 17, 2019, or Claiming Price $50,000

Race 8 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • Gordy Florida, A Birzer, 15/1
  • Curate, F De La Cruz, 7/2
  • Early Mischief, B J Hernandez, Jr., 9/2
  • Touching Rainbows, T Baze, 12/1
  • Mojovation, O Mojica, 10/1
  • Puttheglassdown, D Cohen, 4/1
  • Boyfriend Material, J V Bridgmohan, 6/1
  • Zipp On By, M Mena, 6/1
  • Ezmosh, M Garcia, 20/1
  • Colonel Klink, J Talamo, 20/1
  • Home Run Maker, W De La Cruz, 15/1
  • Operation Stevie, R A Vazquez, 15/1

Race 8 Prediction and Pick

Curate, Puttheglassdown, and Early Mischief are close favorites in this race, but I’m giving the edge to Puttheglassdown ridden by David Cohen. Curate certainly has a slight edge in career wins, but not enough to make a difference, and Early Mischief is likewise a solid maybe.

Pick
  • Puttheglassdown
    4/1

RACE 9 (Rainbow Stakes)

  • Post Time: 5:09 PM
  • Purse: $100,000
  • Type: STAKES
  • Distance: 6 furlongs
  • Conditions: Three Year Olds Which Were Bred in Arkansas and Qualify Under The Rules Governing Same

Race 9 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • Hamazing Wisdom, L S Quinonez, 15/1
  • Captain Don, W De La Cruz, 4/1
  • Chicken Hawk, R E Eramia, 15/1
  • Implicator, M Mena, 12/1
  • Jimmie T, B J Hernandez, Jr., 15/1
  • Tempt Fate, C J Lanerie, 7/2
  • Man in the Can, J Rosario, 8/1
  • Ten Buds, F De La Cruz, 15/1
  • Piece of Work, D Cohen, 20/1
  • Zaino Boyz, J Talamo, 8/5

Race 9 Prediction and Pick

This is the second stakes race of the day, and the competition for that $100K is going to be fierce. There are three very likely suspects in this race, including favorite Zaino Boyz at 8/5, Tempt Fate at 7/2, and Captain Don at 4/1. I don’t think Zaino Boyz’s record warrants the moneyline odds, but what do I know?

Okay, what I know—or at least what I believe—is that Captain Don with Walter De La Cruz onboard is the better choice to win the Rainbow Stakes. Sure, Zaino Boyz has three wins among his seven starts, but both Captain Don and Tempt Fate achieved solid wins against good competitors, and the two had fewer starts in which to achieve that.

Oh, and Walter De La Cruz has a better record for first-place finishes than do the jockeys on Zaino Boyz and Tempt Fate—Joseph Talamo and Corey J. Lanerie, respectively.

Pick
  • Captain Don
    4/1
