Free Horse Racing Picks for Fonner Park on Tuesday, April 14, 2020

The weatherman says Grand Island, Nebraska, will be chilly and windy on Tuesday—that’s a high of 49 degrees and 20 mph winds, respectively. Did I mention partly cloudy? Yeah, it’s gonna be partly cloudy, too. Not horrible weather, but it does make me wonder if the jockeys at Fonner Park wear colored Carhartts instead of silks…

The last three races at Fonner Park on April 14, 2020, are the ones I’ll be taking a closer look at. The 8th race is the Runza Stakes. The Runza—a stakes race for fillies and mares three years old and upward—was originally scheduled for the day before Easter but was shifted to this week and with a purse slightly lightened, reflecting the absence of spectators.

The Dowd Mile, another Fonner Park race that was originally scheduled for April 11, is now running as the last race on Wednesday, April 15, 2020.

Post time for the first race at Fonner Park on April 14, 2020, is 4 PM (CDT).

RACE 7

  • Post Time: 6:42 PM (CDT)
  • Purse: $8,400
  • Type: ALLOWANCE OPTIONAL CLAIMING
  • Distance: 6 furlongs (dirt)
  • Conditions: For Three Year Olds and Upward Which Have Never Won Four Races or Claiming Price $10,000

Race 7 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • 1 Mallory’s Bandit, D. Wood, 12/1
  • 2 Overanalyzer, A. Martinez, 5/2
  • 3 Be My Shadow, C. Fackler, 8/1
  • 4 Seville’swonderboy, J. L. Olesiak, 10/1
  • 5 Legendary Larry (LA), R. J. Carpio, 6/1
  • 6 Southernaire, J Journet, 12/1
  • 7 Chilango, R. Martinez, 15/1
  • 8 Scooter’s Boy, N. Haar, 4/1
  • 9 Wild Drive, M. T. Luark, 6/1
  • 10 Golden Bullet, E McNeil, 10/1

Race 7 Prediction and Pick

Overanalyzer is the favorite in this race, and while I have an eye on Scooter’s Boy at 4/1, I’m going to stick with Overanaylzer. Both the favorite and the second have two wins in 2020 and a singleton win in 2019, but Overanalyzer has better career earnings because he’s finished in the money more often. On the jockey front, both Armando Martinez (aboard Overanalyzer) and Nathan Haar (riding Scooter’s Boy) are experienced veterans, but Martinez has a few years more than Haar.

Pick
  • Overanalyzer
    5/2

RACE 8 (Runza Stakes)

  • Post Time: 7:09 PM
  • Purse: $10,000
  • Type: Stakes
  • Distance: 6 furlongs (dirt)
  • Conditions: For Fillies and Mares, Three Year Olds and Upward

Race 8 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • 1 Kool Kate, J. L. Olesiak, 5/2
  • 2 Dixie Flyer, D. Wood, 8/1
  • 3 Matapan, J Journet, 6/1
  • 4 Stella Marie, E McNeil, 12/1
  • 5 Chub’s Charmer, N. Haar, 10/1
  • 6 Love at Night, C. Fackler, 7/2
  • 7 I’mabarnkat, L. R. Rodriguez, 10/1
  • 8 Betty Jean, S A Bethke, 15/1
  • 9 Eaton’s Memory, A. Martinez, 9/2

Race 8 Prediction and Pick

Kool Kate is the favored mare in this running of the Runza Stakes, but she has a few obstacles to victory, including Love at Night, a mare with 13 firsts in her 20-race career. Still, Kool Kate is no slouch in the wins department, having chalked up 10 in her 24 career starts. She’s also earned more than Love at Night, a crude but fair method of judging thoroughbreds. I’d say this race is a coin flip between the two, but I’m picking Kool Kate because Jake L. Olesiak is the more experienced jockey, though Chris Fackler is no slouch.

If you’re looking for a longshot pick, try I’mabarnkat with Luis Ramon Rodriguez aboard. I’mabarnkat has a better record than her current 10/1 odds in this race indicate.

Pick
  • Kool Kate
    5/2

RACE 9

  • Post Time: 7:36 PM
  • Purse: $9,200
  • Type: ALLOWANCE
  • Distance: 6 furlongs (dirt)
  • Conditions: For Three Year Olds and Upward

Race 9 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • 1 Hotfoot, B. McNeil, 8/1
  • 2 Bandwidth, D. Wood, 12/1
  • 3 Heisayankee, J. Journet, 8/1
  • 4 Cruz’n Jack, T. Hynes, 15/1
  • 5 Itsallaboutyou, C. Fackler, 12/1
  • 6 Holding Fast, A. Martinez, 4/1
  • 7 Ourbestfriend, J. L. Olesiak, 5/2
  • 8 War Eagle’s Return, M. T. Luark, 20/1
  • 9 Executive Decree, N. Haar, 5/1
  • 10 London Legacy, S. A. Bethke, 6/1

Race 9 Prediction and Pick

Ourbestfriend, Holding Fast, and Executive Decree are the top three thoroughbreds favored to win this last race of the day. I’m going with Executive Decree here (with Nathan Haar aboard), simply because the gelding has the advantage of experience over his ever-so-slightly younger competitors. Plus, he’s crossed the finish line first more often than they have.

By the way, you longshot lovers should stay away from War Eagle’s Return. I know 20/1 sounds lucrative, and it is—if the horse wins. That’s just w-a-y unlikely here, even with Mike Luark at the reins.

Pick
  • Executive Decree
    5/1
