Thistledown Racino Picks for Tuesday, June 23, 2020

Thoroughbred racing at Thistledown Racino continues Tuesday, June 23, 2020, with an eight-race card of mostly claiming and maiden races.

The Midwest is all about thunderstorms this week, and that is certainly true for North Randall, Ohio. The forecast for Tuesday calls for thunderstorms and an 80% chance of rain, temps in the mid-70s, and winds around 14 mph.

I cover the top three races here, but you can always find the complete list of Thistledown Racino’s scheduled races at our recommended horse racing betting sites.

Post time for the first race is 12:50 PM (EDT). My picks and betting tips for Thistledown on Tuesday follow.

Race 5 Prediction and Pick

I suspect strongly that the money finishes in this race will be some combination of the top three moneyline favorites, although not necessarily in the order presented. Still, I’m betting on a win from the 3/1 favorite Golden Afleet, with Luis A. Gonzalez in the irons. This five-year-old gelding moneyed in 17 of his 35 career starts, six of them wins.

Race 5 Tip

I don’t see any profitable longshots in this race, and even the shorter odds don’t look good against the moneyline favorites.

Pick
  • Golden Afleet
    3/1

RACE 6

  • Post Time: 3:20 PM
  • Purse: $20,000
  • Type: MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT
  • Distance: 5 furlongs
  • Conditions: For Maidens, Two Years Old

Race 6 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • 1 Brilliant Journey, A Santos, 5/2
  • 1A Alexandria, A Santos, 5/2
  • 2 Royalandtoulouse, L R Rivera, 8/1
  • 3 Latin Spice, Y L Correa, 7/2
  • 4 Tribute to Tom, T D Houghton, 6/1
  • 5 Uptown, E Barbaran, 9/2
  • 6 Nicky Two Shoes, L Machado, 3/1

Coupled Entries – 1 – Brilliant Journey, 1A – Alexandria

Race 6 Prediction and Pick

I know this is a maiden race for two-year-olds, and as such requires “darts in the dark” handicapping, but I don’t see any way either of the two coupled entries could warrant 5/2 odds. A much stronger possibility, and the one I’ll put my money on, is the 9/2 Uptown with veteran Eric Barbaran aboard. This colt has a decent history of workout breezes, and Barbaran’s the top jockey in this race.

Sure to give Uptown some competition is Latin Spice (7/2), piloted by Yarmarie Correa. Latin Spice has done some competent breezing in workouts, but it’s Correa’s solid win stats as well as her 5 lb. apprentice allowance that suggests there might be a win there. Still, I believe Uptown will prevail.

Race 6 Tip

I don’t see any long-odds entries worthy of the risk.

Pick
  • Uptown
    9/2

RACE 7

  • Post Time: 3:50 PM
  • Purse: $23,000
  • Type: ALLOWANCE
  • Distance: 6 furlongs
  • Conditions: For Three Year Olds And Upward Which Have Never Won Three Races

Race 7 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • 1 Skytown Cat, J J Velez, 5/2
  • 1A Dr. Zarnett, R Feliciano, 5/2
  • 2 Zeroed In, E Barbaran, 3/1
  • 3 Labyrinth, H L Rosario, Jr., 8/1
  • 4 Jamaican Magic, E Paucar, 7/2
  • 5 Baritone, F Salazar Becerra, 10/1
  • 6 Here Comes Kyle, G Corrales, 6/1
  • 7 Peanuts Perfection, R Mejias, 6/1

A – Coupled Entries – 1 – Skytown Cat, 1A – Dr. Zarnett

Race 7 Prediction and Pick

I’m going with Peanuts Perfections (6/1), with Ricardo Mejias in the irons. While Mejias is one of the better journeyman jockeys in this race, it’s the five-year-old gelding Peanuts Perfection himself that sells the win: four money finishes in his five career starts, two of those wins.

Race 7 Tip

Longest odds I’ll take a risk for in this race are 8/1 for Labyrinth, ridden by Hector L. Rosario Jr. This four-year-old gelding moneyed 13 times in his 21 career starts, two of them wins.

Pick
  • Peanuts Perfection
    6/1
