Free Horse Racing Picks and Betting Tips for Belmont Park – Thursday, July 9, 2020

| July 9, 2020 12:01 am PDT

Belmont Park features a nine-race card for Thursday, July 9, 2020, with a full slate of maiden, claiming, and allowance matches.

The forecast in Elmont, New York Thursday calls for mostly sunny skies with a slight (10%) chance of rain, temperatures in the mid-80s, and winds around 13 mph.

I cover the richest three races here, but you can always find the complete list of Belmont Park races at our leading sites for wagering on horse racing.

Post time for the first race at Belmont Park on Thursday is 1:15 PM (EDT). Let’s take a look at my predictions, picks, and tips.

RACE 3

  • Post Time: 2:23 PM
  • Purse: $66,000
  • Type: ALLOWANCE
  • Distance: 1-1/4 miles (turf)
  • Conditions: For Fillies And Mares Three Years Old And Upward Which Have Never Won $10,000 Other Than Maiden, Claiming, Starter Or State Bred Allowance Or Which Have Never Won Two Races

Race 3 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • 1 Wicked Amber, L Cardenas, 30/1
  • 2 Whatdoesasharksay, K Carmouche, 4/1
  • 3 No Mo Temper, J Alvarado, 8/1
  • 4 Ebony, I Ortiz, Jr., 1/1
  • 5 Hungry Kitten, J L Ortiz, 3/1
  • 6 Setting the Mood, J R Velazquez, 9/2

Race 3 Prediction and Pick

Far be it from me to think any horse but the 1/1 favorite will win this race—I’m sticking with Ebony, ridden by top jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. This four-year-old filly moneyed in five of her eight career starts.

Race 3 Tip

In any other field—one with a more equitable distribution of jockeys with varying skill levels—I might recommend a show ticket on the 30/1 longshot Wicked Amber, particularly because of apprentice jockey Luis Cardena’s seven-pound allowance. But not this one. Keep your longshot money in your pocket.

Pick
  • Ebony
    1/1

RACE 7

  • Post Time: 4:32 PM
  • Purse: $66,000
  • Type: ALLOWANCE OPTIONAL CLAIMING
  • Distance: 1-1/8 miles (turf)
  • Conditions: For Three Year Olds Which Have Never Won $10,000 Once Other Than Maiden, Claiming, Starter Or State Bred Allowance Or Which Have Never Won Two Races Or Claiming Price $80,000

Race 7 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • 1 Our Country, M Franco, 9/2
  • 2 Assiduously, I Ortiz, Jr., 6/1
  • 3 On Base, J Castellano, 5/1
  • 4 Shamrocket, J Alvarado, 4/1
  • 5 No Word, J L Ortiz, 2/1
  • 6 Buy Me Candy, J Lezcano, 8/1
  • 7 Will Sing for Wine, J R Velazquez, 8/1
  • 8 Arithmetic, SCRATCHED

Race 7 Prediction and Pick

I’m sticking with the moneyline favorite again, this time the 2/1 No Word, with Jose L. Ortiz in the irons. This three-year-old colt finished in the money five times out of six career starts.

Race 7 Tip

I see no long odds in this race worth the risk.

Pick
  • No Word
    2/1

RACE 8

  • Post Time: 5:04 PM
  • Purse: $66,000
  • Type: ALLOWANCE
  • Distance: 1 mile
  • Conditions: For Fillies And Mares Three Years Old And Upward Which Have Never Won $10,000 Other Than Maiden, Claiming, Starter Or State Bred Allowance Or Which Have Never Won Two Races

Race 8 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • 1 Cobra Sophie, B Hernandez, 10/1
  • 1A Excess Capacity, I Ortiz, Jr., 10/1
  • 2 Grand Cru Classe, J R Velazquez, 2/1
  • 3 The Great Johanna, K Carmouche, 8/1
  • 4 Dovey Lovey, H K Harkie, 20/1
  • 5 Mrs. Danvers, J L Ortiz, 3/5
  • 6 Maiden Beauty, D Davis, 12/1

A – Coupled Entries – 1 – Cobra Sophie, 1A – Excess Capacity

Race 8 Prediction and Pick

I have to agree with the moneyline again—I’m going with the 3/5 favorite Mrs. Danvers, with Joel L. Ortiz aboard. This three-year-old filly moneyed in all three of her career starts and won one of them.

Race 8 Tip

Longest odds I’d recommend a show ticket for are the coupled entries of Cobra Sophie and Excess Capacity, ridden respectively by Brian J. Hernandez and Irad Ortiz Jr. Cobra Sophie is a six-year-old mare that finished in the money for 16 of her 35 starts, with three of them wins. Excess Capacity is a four-year-old filly with nine money finishes in 16 career starts, four of those wins.

Incidentally, forget about Dovey Lovey, the 20/1 actual longshot here—that just isn’t going to happen.

Pick
  • Mrs. Danvers
    3/5
