Fonner Park Picks 5/12

Fonner Park thoroughbred racing continues on Tuesday, May 12, 2020, with an eight-race card of mostly maiden, allowance, and claiming races.

The forecast in Grand Island, Nebraska, for Tuesday says to look for cloudy skies, a high in the low 50s, 20% chance of rain, and winds around 16 mph.

Remember that you can always find the full list of races, entries, jockeys, and wagering options at one of our recommended horse racing betting sites.

Tuesday’s Fonner Park betting picks are below. Post time for the first race is 4 PM (CDT).

  • Post Time: 4:27 PM
  • Purse: $7,000
  • Distance: 1 mile
  • Conditions: For Three Year Olds And Upward Which Have Never Won Two Races

Race 2 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • 1 Mascarpone, C Fackler, 6/1
  • 2 Praise Be to God, S A Bethke, 10/1
  • 3 Captain John, F Arrieta, 6/1
  • 4 Mingo Born, SCRATCHED
  • 5 Best Trick Yet, R Martinez, 7/2
  • 6 Eastside Boy, J L Olesiak, 3/1
  • 7 Banana Pepper, A Martinez, 5/2

Race 2 Prediction and Pick

The three outside horses are the three favorites in this race, with Banana Pepper, ridden by Armando Martinez, as the 5/2 moneyline favorite. I personally like the second-favored horse, Eastside Boy, at 3/1, with veteran jockey Jake Olesiak in the irons. Not only does Jake have a better wins/WPS score, but Eastside Boy has moneyed seven times in his 16 career starts.

Race 2 Tip

Only real longshot in this race is Praise Be to God at 10/1, piloted by Scott Bethke. Unfortunately, this five-year-old gelding scored his only win (and only money finish out of seven starts) back in 2018. Bethke has a good record, but I don’t think it’s enough to pull Praise Be to God out of his slump.

  • Eastside Boy

  • Post Time: 5:21 PM
  • Purse: $8,800
  • Distance: 6 furlongs
  • Conditions: For Certified Nebraska Bred Fillies And Mares Three Years Old And Upward Which Have Never Won Three Races Or Claiming Price $7,500

Race 4 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • 1 Chamber Doors, F Arrieta, 9/2
  • 2 Ubetcha Ima Bumper, C Fackler, 6/1
  • 3 P R Girl Crush, A Martinez, 15/1
  • 4 Hold Fast Kat, N Haar, 10/1
  • 5 Judge On the Run, J L Olesiak, 5/2
  • 6 Trepi’s Trpl Crown, D Wood, 8/1
  • 7 Mine for a Song, M T Luark, 10/1
  • 8 Jamacian Me Money, R Martinez, 12/1
  • 9 Lovesaflyin, S A Bethke, 7/2

Race 4 Prediction and Pick

I’m going with the third-favored horse in this race, and my reasons are obvious. At 9/2, Chamber Doors has it all: Pole position, solid record of starts (8 money finishes, three of them wins), and Francisco Arietta, the only jockey at Fonner Park scoring higher in Wins/WPS than Olesiak. Could be a nail-biter, but Chamber Doors will prevail.

Race 4 Tip

All of the probable winners in this match are among the top three moneyline choices, so save your longshot money.

  • Chamber Doors

  • Post Time: 7:09 PM
  • Purse: $8,400
  • Distance: 6 furlongs
  • Conditions: For Three Year Olds And Upward Which Have Never Won Four Races Or Claiming Price $10,000

Race 8 Runners and Odds Forecast

  • 1 Luckynsuccessful, J Journet, 12/1
  • 2 Dun Sober, E McNeil, 8/1
  • 3 Top of the Page, J L Olesiak, 8/1
  • 4 Spoon Boss, D Wood, 6/1
  • 5 For the Hustle, C Fackler, 20/1
  • 6 Masterful Stride, B McNeil, 15/1
  • 7 Lovethatcause, N Haar, 5/2
  • 8 Knight Disruptor, A Martinez, 5/1
  • 9 Mallory’s Bandit, F Arrieta, 4/1
  • 10 London Legacy, S A Bethke, 12/1

Race 8 Prediction and Pick

I’m sticking with the 5/2 moneyline favorite in this race, Lovethatcause, with Nathan Haar in the irons. Lovethatcause is no slouch: Out of 22 career starts, he’s moneyed in 18, with 4 of those wins.

Race 8 Tip

At 12/1, Jarred Journet’s mount, Luckynsuccessful, might be just that, what with the pole position and a solid record of career starts—14 starts, 9 money finishes, 4 of which were wins. Certainly worth a look. Incidentally, the other 12/1 longshot—London Legacy—has one of the better starting records in this field but has raced only once in 2020, and his last win was nearly a year ago. Put your longshot money on Luckynsuccessful.

  • Lovethatcause
