FFA Cup Odds and Predictions for 2021

| April 12, 2021 10:24 am PDT

The pandemic deprived us of the FFA Cup last year, as the Australian soccer calendar was given a shake-up. 18 months on from Adelaide United’s 4-0 thrashing of Melbourne City in the 2019 final, the FFA Cup is back!

The preliminary rounds kicked off back in February, with over 700 teams originally entering the tournament.

There is still a long way to go before we reach the business end of the competition, but you can already bet on the winner of the 2021 FFA Cup.

Since its inception in 2014, the FFA Cup has been dominated by A-League clubs, with Adelaide winning three of the six titles. Still, there are multiple NPL sides aiming to upset the FFA Cup odds this year.

In this 2021 FFA Cup betting preview, I look at the bookmakers’ winner odds, analyze the favorites and sleepers, and share my FFA Cup predictions for 2021.

Here are the current odds for the 2021 FFA Cup winner. You should check out a few of the top-rated soccer betting sites to shop around for the best prices before placing your wagers.

Unsurprisingly, all 12 A-League teams are at the top of the bookies’ 2021 FFA Cup odds list. Melbourne City (6.00) and Sydney FC (6.00) are the current joint favorites, with three-time champion Adelaide United (9.00) close behind.

Having lost in two finals over the years, Perth Glory (10.00) is up there, too. Melbourne Victory (13.00) lifted the trophy back in 2015, although the fallen giant is struggling this season.

The highest priced A-League side is Wellington Phoenix (26.00). After that, the odds take a big leap, with NPL clubs Wollongong, Heidelberg, Sydney Olympic, and Sydney United all priced at 51.00.

More specials and props will become available as the tournament unfolds, so make sure you keep an eye out for those.

Previous FFA Cup Winners

Before we look at the favorites and sleepers for the 2021 FFA Cup, let’s take a quick glance at the competition’s history. Studying the past winners and finalists will ultimately give us a better chance of landing our FFA Cup bets.

FFA CUP WINNERS (2014-2019)
Team Titles Runner-up
Adelaide United 3 (2014, 2018, 2019) 1 (2017)
Sydeny FC 1 (2017) 1 (2018)
Melbourne City 1 (2016) 1 (2019)
Melbourne Victory 1 (2015)
Perth Glory 1 (2014, 2015)

There may have only been six editions of the tournament, yet Adelaide has triumphed on three occasions.

Having won the inaugural competition, the Reds have reached each of the last three finals – winning the previous two.

Sydney FC and Melbourne City each have one triumph and one final loss to their name, while Perth reached the first two finals but came away with nothing on both occasions.

Right, let’s check out this year’s contenders.

Analyzing the 2021 FFA Cup Betting Favorites

Below, I evaluate the frontrunners to win the FFA Cup in 2021.

Can Melbourne City Make Amends for 2019?

If Melbourne City’s recent A-League form is anything to go by, Patrick Kisnorbo’s men stand a genuine chance of going all the way in the FFA Cup this year.

Indeed, a six-match winning streak across February and March has thrust the club into title contention.

After finishing second on the A-League ladder and losing in the Grand Final last season, City is clearly eager for success in 2021. With Jamie Maclaren firing on all cylinders, Kisnorbo’s side will be difficult to stop.

Is Sydney FC a Genuine Contender?

It is no secret that Sydney FC has made an indifferent start to the 2020/21 campaign. Following another year of A-League domination, the Sky Blues have struggled for consistency this season and have found goals hard to come by.

Of course, you’d be foolish write off the defending A-League champions when it comes to betting on the winner of the 2021 FFA Cup. But if their attacking problems persist, they could come unstuck against the stronger teams in the competition.

Will Adelaide Win Three in a Row?

Like City, Adelaide also enjoyed a six-game winning run recently. The Reds didn’t get off to the best of starts this season, although it feels like they are growing into the campaign.

The return of Craig Goodwin has been huge for the South Australian outfit this year. The creative winger was around when the Reds clinched the second of their three FFA Cup triumphs in 2018 – and he is destined to play a key role in Adelaide’s push for a fourth title.

Can the Glory Finally Lift the Trophy?

When you consider the Glory’s recent form, it is difficult to imagine them breaking their FFA Cup curse in 2021. The Western Australians have been wildly unpredictable so far this term, making it extremely tough to predict how their campaign will unfold.

Perth reached back-to-back finals in 2014 and 2015, although a lot has changed since then. The current squad certainly boasts enough quality to succeed, yet a lack of consistency could ultimately cost the Glory.

Does Brisbane Have What it Takes?

Brisbane is another team that has struggled for consistency throughout the 2020/21 campaign. By the time the Round of 32 rolls around, the Roar may be in a better place. But based on current form, I can’t see them challenging the FFA Cup frontrunners.

If Dylan Wenzel-Halls can hit the target on a regular basis, Brisbane could go deep into the competition. But when the young forward isn’t performing well, his side invariably struggles.

2021 FFA Cup Sleepers to Consider

Let’s check out some of the outsiders that could upset the FFA Cup odds in 2021.

Is Wellington Worth Backing at 26.00?

In my eyes, Wellington’s long odds are worth considering. Let’s not forget that the Nix finished third in the A-League last season – and they are currently showing big signs of improvement following a slow start to 2021.

The A-League ladder is wide open this year, meaning any side from the top-flight stands a chance of going far in the FFA Cup. Even placing a small wager on the Phoenix could land you a tasty profit come the end of the campaign.

Can Wollongong Topple the A-League Giants?

No team from outside the A-League has ever won the FFA Cup. NPL side Brisbane Strikers managed to reach the semi-finals last time around, but clubs from the lower tiers of Australian soccer have always struggled to compete with the top-flight teams.

However, Wollongong will be quietly confident of challenging the A-League clubs this year. Having reached the Round of 32 on two occasions (2014, 2016), the Wolves were crowned National Premier League champions in 2019 – proving they are one of the strongest NPL sides around.

Will Bentleigh Greens Make Waves Again?

The Greens stunned Australian soccer by going all the way to the semi-finals of the inaugural FFA Cup and have since featured regularly in the latter stages of the tournament. After reaching the quarter-finals in 2016, Bentleigh qualified for the semi-finals again in 2018 – losing 2-0 to Adelaide.

The Melbourne-based NPL outfit is one of only six state league teams to have eliminated A-League opposition in the FFA Cup. That statistic is undoubtedly worth noting when it comes to betting on the FFA Cup in 2021.

Who Will Win the 2021 FFA Cup?

As much as I would love to see an NPL team buck the trend of A-League winners in the FFA Cup, it is difficult to imagine that happening anytime soon.

At the end of the day, the gulf between the Australian top-flight and the other divisions in the country is vast, so expecting the likes of Wollongong and Bentleigh Greens to challenge for the trophy is a big ask.

As things stand, I really like the look of Melbourne City (6.00) and Adelaide United (9.00). City is arguably the strongest team in Australia right now, while Adelaide’s FFA Cup history is difficult to ignore.

With the preliminary rounds still ongoing, the A-League teams won’t enter the competition until July. The final is currently scheduled for October 30, meaning we still have plenty of time to bet on the FFA Cup winner in 2021.

Having said that, if you can find early value in the 2021 FFA Cup winner odds, you could take home a tasty profit!

Wow! The A-League has been unbelievably exciting this season, hasn’t it? Western United’s 5-4 win over Perth Glory will surely go down as one of the greatest matches in A-League history, while City’s 6-0 thrashing of Victory in the recent...
