Fantasy Premier League Tips for Gameweek 23 – Best Transfers, Sleepers, and Player Rankings

Bruno Fernandes and Jack Harrison were the unlikely heroes of Gameweek 22. Bruno scored twice against Aston Villa before notching two assists against Brentford, while Harrison netted his first career hat-trick as Leeds beat West Ham.
We haven’t got time to dwell on Gameweek 22, though, as the Premier League action resumes on Friday, January 21.
In this post, I will take you through the best Fantasy Premier League players for Gameweek 23. I cover all the top FPL players for Gameweek 23, along with a handful of sleepers to consider.
I also share my Gameweek 23 FPL player rankings at the end of this piece, so make sure you stick around for those.
Top Players for FPL Gameweek 23
Let’s kick things off by looking at the best players for FPL Gameweek 23. In my eyes, the four players in this section are must-have picks for the upcoming round.
Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester City (£12.3m)
Kevin De Bruyne is back! Having missed a handful of games at the end of 2021 due to COVID-19, the midfield maestro appears to be back to his best.
After bagging a brace in Manchester City’s 7-0 thrashing of Leeds, De Bruyne scored against Leicester City before assisting against Brenford. He also scored in last weekend’s win over Chelsea, meaning he has chalked up four goals and an assist across the past six games.
This weekend, Pep Guardiola’s men come up against the Saints, who they crushed 5-2 last season. Since De Bruyne scored twice in that game, he is one of the best FPL players for Gameweek 23.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool (£8.4m)
Behind Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold is the highest-scoring player in Fantasy Premier League. The Liverpool wing-back has recorded two goals and ten assists in 19 games this term, racking up plenty of clean sheet points along the way.
TAA has registered a goal and three assists in his previous five appearances. As one of the Reds’ most creative players, he should enjoy a ton of success against Crystal Palace’s shaky backline this weekend.
Joao Cancelo, Manchester City (£7.0m)
Just like Alexander-Arnold, Joao Cancelo is enjoying a phenomenal season. Not only does he have six goal involvements to his name, but he is also part of a Man City defense that has kept a whopping 13 clean sheets this term.
If you haven’t already got Cancelo in your team, now is the perfect time to bring him in. Man City has some favorable fixtures on the horizon, with Brentford and Norwich City coming after Southampton.
Alexandre Lacazette, Arsenal (£8.4m)
In terms of forwards, Alexandre Lacazette is among the top FPL picks for Gameweek 23. Why? Because Arsenal welcomes bottom-of-the-table Burnley to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
In addition to the favorable fixture, Lacazette’s numbers have skyrocketed recently. The Frenchman has bagged two goals and three assists across his last five Premier League outings, setting himself up nicely for the visit of Burnley.
Best FPL Sleepers to Target for Gameweek 23
It’s time to check out the top sleepers for FPL Gameweek 23. I have included four differential options here, all of whom boast a low ownership percentage.
Jacob Ramsey, Aston Villa (£4.6m)
Jacob Ramsey has taken his game to another level since the arrival of Steven Gerrard. The 20-year-old has started eight of Aston Villa’s previous nine Premier League games, picking up plenty of FPL points in the process.
Following an impressive ten-point haul against Norwich, the young midfielder scored and assisted in Villa’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United last weekend – securing 12 points as a result.
A lot of FPL managers will be keen to transfer in other Villa midfielders like Philippe Coutinho (£7.0m), Emi Buendia (£6.2m), and John McGinn (£5.8). But at just £4.6m, Ramsey’s ownership is only 2.1%. That makes him an excellent differential option.
Jack Harrison, Leeds United (£5.5m)
Believe it not, Jack Harrison failed to score across his first 15 league outings this season – contributing just a single assist along the way. All of a sudden, he is one of the most sought-after FPL assets.
The Leeds winger has netted four goals in his last two appearances, including a hat-trick against West Ham in the previous round. He costs £5.5m is owned by 1.4% of FPL managers.
Chris Wood, Newcastle United (£6.7m)
Allain Saint-Maximin is among the most popular forwards in the game right now. In fact, only five forwards have a higher ownership than Newcastle’s French trickster. But Chris Wood’s arrival has changed everything.
? | MOVING TARGET
— Fantasy Football Scout (@FFScout) January 19, 2022
10+ goals in each of his last four seasons… but only three so far in 2021/22.
With some favourable fixtures ahead, Chris Wood's move to Newcastle is assessed from an #FPL perspective by Magpies fan @SkontoRigga ⤵️#GW23 #GW22https://t.co/v1Cgdswgkb
Wood swapped Burnley for Newcastle earlier this month and is set to be the focal point in Eddie Howe’s forward line. With the Magpies facing Leeds’ leaky defense this weekend, Wood is bound to get multiple opportunities to score.
Aymeric Laporte, Manchester City (£5.6m)
You may be surprised to learn that Aymeric Laporte’s ownership currently stands at just 6.4%. For a player who is a regular in the Premier League’s tightest defense, that is not a big percentage at all.
With Cancelo (£7.0m) at 44.1% ownership and Ruben Dias (£6.3m) at 27.9%, Laporte is undoubtedly the best Man City defender if you’re looking to move away from the template and climb up your mini leagues.
FPL Gameweek 23 Player Rankings
Let’s wrap things up with my FPL player rankings for Gameweek 23. In this section, I look at the top five goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and forwards for the upcoming round.
Best Goalkeepers for FPL Gameweek 23
- Aaron Ramsdale, Arsenal (£5.1m)
- Ederson, Manchester City (£6.1m)
- Alisson, Liverpool (£6.0m)
- Jose Sa, Wolves (£5.2m)
- Illan Meslier, Leeds United (£4.80)
Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale is the best FPL goalkeeper for Gameweek 23. The young shot-stopper has conceded just 16 goals in 17 league games this season, keeping nine clean sheets in the process. With lowly Burnley up next, another shutout is on the cards.
Representing Man City and Liverpool, respectively, Ederson and Alisson are obvious picks. They are undoubtedly the top two goalkeepers in the league right now.
That said, Jose Sa is the highest-scoring goalkeeper in FPL this season. The Wolves gloveman has kept eight clean sheets and has played a key role in helping his team to achieve the second-best defensive record in the division.
FPL Gameweek 23 Best Defenders
- Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool (£8.4m)
- Joao Cancelo, Manchester City (£7.0m)
- Kieran Tierney, Arsenal (£5.0m)
- Ruben Dias, Manchester City (£6.3m)
- Conor Coady, Wolves (£4.6m)
I’ve already spoken about TAA and Cancelo. Those two are must-have picks at the moment and will likely remain in most FPL teams for the remainder of the campaign.
Kieran Tierney is among the best defenders for FPL Gameweek 23, having produced a series of standout displays of late. The Arsenal left-back has notched a goal and three assists across his past six outings, meaning he should score points against Burnley this weekend.
Conor Coady is another excellent defensive option. Not only is he part of Wolves’ steely backline, but he has also chipped in with a couple of goals this term.
Top FPL Midfielders for Gameweek 23
- Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester City (£12.3m)
- Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal (£5.4m)
- Diogo Jota, Liverpool (£8.4m)
- Raheem Sterling, Manchester City (£10.7m)
- Raphinha, Leeds United (£6.5m)
De Bruyne definitely comes first when it comes to examining the best midfielders for FPL Gameweek 23, but there are plenty of other attractive avenues to explore.
Having racked up four goals and two assists in his last eight EPL games, Gabriel Martinelli will be licking his lips at the prospect of exploiting Burnley on Sunday. Liverpool’s Diogo Jota is a great option, too, with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane away at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Raheem Sterling has scored six goals in his previous nine league outings, so don’t sleep on him. Raphinha also looks set to enjoy plenty of success this weekend, with struggling Newcastle travelling to Elland Road.
Best Forwards for FPL Gameweek 23
- Alexandre Lacazette, Arsenal (£8.4m)
- Emanuel Dennis, Watford (£6.1m)
- Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United (£12.5m)
- Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Everton (£7.9m)
- Chris Wood, Newcastle United (£6.7m)
Alongside Lacazette, Emanuel Dennis is one of the best FPL forwards for Gameweek 23. The Watford star is the second-highest scoring forward in the game, having chalked up eight goals and five assists this season.
Cristiano Ronaldo is always a solid option. Although he is currently on the road back from injury, he will fancy his chances of scoring against a West Ham defense that shipped three goals against Leeds in the previous round.
You know the forward options aren’t great when Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Chris Wood make it into the top five. Still, they stand a decent chance of picking up FPL points this weekend.
Looking Ahead to FPL Gameweek 23
That concludes my look at the best FPL players for Gameweek 23. Hopefully, my selections live up to expectations and pick up plenty of points this weekend!
Remember – Gameweek 23 gets underway this Friday, with Watford and Norwich facing off at Vicarage Road. On Sunday, London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham wrap up the weekend’s action at Stamford Bridge.
