- Nicholas Latifi (+300000)
According to the Azerbaijan GP odds at BetOnline, Max Verstappen (+115) and Charles Leclerc (+175) are destined to battle it out in a two-horse race in Baku.
Ultimately, it is difficult to argue with the bookmakers’ viewpoint here. Verstappen and Leclerc are separated by just nine points at the top of the World Drivers’ Championship standings, having won six races between them this year.
After snatching P2 in Monaco, Carlos Sainz (+800) is expected to give a good account of himself in Baku. The Ferrari man has already achieved four podiums in 2022, but he has yet to take the chequered flag. Can he register his first victory of the season?
The Mercedes duo of George Russell (+2800) and Lewis Hamilton (+3300) bridge the gap between the favorites and outsiders, who are priced between +10000 and +300000.
Previous F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix Winners
Before we analyze the favorites and potential sleepers for the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, it makes sense to analyze the history of the race. I mean, using stats and trends for F1 betting is never a bad idea.
AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX HISTORY | ||
---|---|---|
Year | Winner | Constructor |
2017 | Daniel Ricciardo | Red Bull |
2018 | Lewis Hamilton | Mercedes |
2019 | Valtteri Bottas | Mercedes |
2020 | Not Held | |
2021 | Sergio Perez | Red Bull |
The inaugural Azerbaijan GP took place in 2017. Daniel Ricciardo won the first race before Lewis Hamilton, and Valtteri Bottas dominated for Mercedes in 2018 and 2019.
The 2020 Azerbaijan GP was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the race returned to the F1 calendar last year. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez triumphed in 2021. Could he go back-to-back in 2022?
2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix Betting Favorites
If the 2022 Azerbaijan betting odds are anything to go by, Verstappen and Leclerc are the obvious frontrunners for P1 in Baku. Let’s take a closer look at the Azerbaijan GP betting favorites to find out who stands a greater chance of winning.
Max Verstappen (+115)
Verstappen comes into the Azerbaijan GP on the back of a third-place finish in Monaco. Still, he remains at the summit of the bookies’ 2022 World Drivers’ Championship odds.
The reigning champion has won four of this season’s seven races and managed three consecutive victories in Emilia-Romagna, Miami, and Catalonia. As a result, he finds himself in a pole position to defend his crown.
- Max Verstappen (Red Bull) – 125
- Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) – 116
- Sergio Perez (Red Bull) – 110
- George Russell (Mercedes) – 84
- Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) – 83
- Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) – 50
It’s fair to say that Verstappen endured a difficult start to the season. Despite triumphing in Saudi Arabia, he was forced to retire in Bahrain and Australia due to mechanical issues. But those problems are firmly in the past.
The defending champ has registered four straight podiums and is well and truly back on track. It’s no wonder that he tops the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix odds.
Charles Leclerc (+175)
While Verstappen’s season has improved drastically in recent weeks, Leclerc’s campaign has taken a turn for the worse.
Leclerc won two of the first three races in 2022, securing P1 in Bahrain and Australia. He also finished second in Saudi Arabia, meaning he kicked off the year with three successive top-two finishes.
However, the Ferrari man has only managed to achieve one podium across the previous four races. After finishing sixth in Italy, he claimed P2 in Miami before recording a DNF in Spain. Last time out, he dropped from pole to P4 in Monaco.

Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto has conceded that the team made a mistake with Leclerc’s strategy in Monaco. The driver was called into the pits on three occasions, resulting in a loss of places.
Having said all that, Leclerc is one of the Azerbaijan GP favorites for a reason. In fact, there are multiple reasons why he can triumph in Baku. If he rediscovers his early-season form, he will challenge for P1 on Sunday.
Could Anyone Upset the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix Odds?
Perez was priced at a tasty +1800 to win the Monaco Grand Prix. As it turned out, he made a mockery of the F1 odds. So, can anyone upset the odds for the Azerbaijan GP? It’s time to check out the potential sleepers.
Sergio Perez (+600)
The Formula 1 oddsmakers have taken notice of Perez’s Monaco GP victory. The Mexican was priced at +1800 to triumph last time out, but he is priced at +600 to take the chequered flag in Baku.
Perez is still among the Azerbaijan Grand Prix outsiders despite the sizeable odds drop. I guess that tells you everything you need to know about the dominance of Verstappen and Leclerc.

— Sky Sports F1 (@SkySportsF1) May 29, 2022
That said, Perez’s consistency has been hugely impressive this year. Aside from a DNF in the opening race of the season, the Red Bull driver has yet to finish outside the top four. He even notched three P2 finishes in four races before winning in Monaco.
Let’s not forget that Perez also won the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. He knows what it takes to succeed in Baku, so you’d be foolish to disregard him this time around.
Carlos Sainz (+800)
Like Perez, Sainz’s odds have plummeted since the last race. The Spaniard was priced at +1600 to win the Monaco GP, but he is priced at +800 to finish atop the podium in Azerbaijan. Why? Because he clinched P2 last time out.
Sainz started the season with finishes of P2 and P3 before failing to finish the next two races. Since then, however, the 27-year-old has registered finishes of P3, P4, and P2.
This year, only one driver – Verstappen – has achieved more podiums than Sainz’s four. Having finished second on two occasions, it is surely only a matter of time before the Ferrari man secures his first victory of 2022.
George Russell (+2800)
Believe it or not, Russell racked up his seventh straight top-five finish last time out. That is not a coincidence. I know I spoke about Perez’s consistency, but Russell has arguably been the most consistent driver this year.
The young Englishman has taken to life at Mercedes like a duck to water, continuously outperforming Hamilton in the other Mercedes. But has he got what it takes to clinch his maiden F1 race win?
HIGHLIGHTING RUSSELL’S CONSISTENCY IN 2022
- Bahrain Grand Prix: P4
- Saudia Arabia Grand Prix: P5
- Australian Grand Prix: P3
- Emilia Romagna Grand Prix: P4
- Miami Grand Prix: P5
- Spanish Grand Prix: P3
- Monaco Grand Prix: P5
Russell finds himself fourth in the World Drivers’ Championship standings thanks to his consistency. Not only does he sit above his teammate, but he also sits above Ferrari’s Sainz.
Although the gap between Russell and the three frontrunners is substantial, the 24-year-old remains within touching distance of Verstappen, Leclerc, and Perez. This suggests that he is capable of challenging for P1 in Baku.
Lewis Hamilton (+3300)
It is no secret that Hamilton is enduring a disappointing season. Following a series of below-par displays, the Mercedes star finds himself sixth in the standings – two points ahead of Lando Norris and a whopping 75 points behind Verstappen.
Remarkably, the seven-time champion has failed to make it onto the podium since the opening race of the campaign. He even finished all the way down in P13 in Italy, emphasizing his struggles.
Still, this is a man who secured eight race wins last season. He has also claimed six of the previous eight World Championships, so you can never write him off.
There is no denying that Hamilton is one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time. If his team can provide him with a competitive car, he will surely challenge the title contenders once again.
My 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix Prediction
Verstappen and Leclerc have been the bookmakers’ out-and-out favorites for the past few races. Granted, they are still heavily favored to triumph in Azerbaijan. But the gap between the frontrunners and the chasing pack has shortened.
The chaotic Monaco Grand Prix saw Perez take the chequered flag and Sainz snatch P2, while Verstappen and Leclerc finished third and fourth, respectively. Will we see more unexpected drama in Baku?
It is worth noting that Monaco and the Baku City Circuit are both street circuits. With back-to-back street races on the 2022 Formula 1 schedule, we can use information from the previous race to aid our Azerbaijan Grand Prix predictions.
Not only did Perez win the Monaco GP, but he also won the 2021 Azerbaijan GP. On top of that, the Mexican has finished outside the top two on just one occasion in the past five races.
That is my 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix prediction. If you’re looking for more Formula 1 betting tips, why not explore the best F1 betting strategies?
