There are two mouth-watering ties for us to enjoying in the English Premier League on Wednesday, with three of the current top five — Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United — in action. At the other end of the table, West Ham will be aiming to secure their top-flight safety on July 22.
Let’s begin by looking at Wednesday’s EPL schedule.
Manchester United vs. West Ham United
Liverpool vs. Chelsea
Following Leicester’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday, in-form Man Utd has the chance to break into the top four this week. Meanwhile, Chelsea will be hoping to cling onto their Champions League spot by coming away from Anfield with a positive result.
You can find my predictions for both of Wednesday’s Premier League games below. I also share my EPL betting picks for July 22 at the end of this post, so make sure you hang around for those.
Man Utd to Beat West Ham
Manchester United’s remarkable unbeaten run was finally brought to an end on Sunday. The Red Devils went 19 games without defeat in all competitions, but a 3-1 FA Cup semi-final loss to Chelsea proved that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side is actually beatable.
However, it’s safe to say Solskjaer didn’t field his strongest XI last time out. The manager is clearly prioritizing a top-four spot in the league over a domestic cup triumph, with in-form trio Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, and Mason Greenwood all starting on the substitute bench in their previous outing. Still, Man Utd will be eager to extend their 12-game unbeaten streak in the EPL, so Solskjaer will surely revert back to his favored lineup on Wednesday.
West Ham virtually secured their top-flight status with a convincing 3-1 victory over relegation-rival Watford last week. The Hammers’ unstoppable first-half performance saw the team race into a three-goal lead before the break, with red-hot forward Michail Antonio netting his seventh goal in his last five appearances.
Due to their superior goal difference, West Ham will almost certainly be playing Premier League soccer again next season. However, with safety secured, it’s inevitable that the team’s performance levels will drop off slightly. I’m backing Man Utd to take advantage of this and move into the Champions League places with yet another win.
Liverpool to Beat Chelsea
No matter how much they deny it, Liverpool’s players and coaching staff would have been desperate to finish the campaign with 100 points to their name. Only one team — Manchester City — has ever achieved the century landmark before, so the Reds will no doubt be disappointed that they won’t be capping off their outstanding season with a record-breaking points total.
It could be argued that Jurgen Klopp’s side should already be on 100 points by now. The newly-crowned champion has been nowhere near their best since the restart, losing to Man City and Arsenal while drawing with Everton and Burnley. However, it goes without saying that Klopp will want his players to finish the campaign on a high.
Chelsea will come into this game brimming with confidence after ending Man Utd’s unbeaten run. But given the testing circumstances, the London club will be even happier about reaching the FA Cup final. It’s been a tough season for Frank Lampard’s young side, but the Blues have exceeded all expectations.
A win for Chelsea at Anfield would see the team book their spot in next season’s Champions League, but Liverpool certainly won’t be willing to hand the Blues the victory. In fact, I’m expecting the home side to end their mini-slump with a statement win on Wednesday.
EPL Picks for Wednesday, July 22
Here are my betting picks for Wednesday’s Premier League games.
Man Utd vs. West Ham – Over 2.5 Man Utd Goals (1.91)
Needless to say, the bookies think that Man Utd (1.20) will win this game with ease. But betting on the home side to win doesn’t offer much value here. You can get huge odds of 11.00 for the West Ham win, and I can see that price tempting the riskier punters out there. However, I’m backing United to score over 2.5 goals.
Only the bottom three teams have a poorer defensive record than West Ham this term, while Man Utd has racked up heaps of high-scoring victories since the resumption. I’m expecting Martial (six goals in six games) and Greenwood (four goals in five games) to be restored to the team on Wednesday, so you have to fear the worst for the Hammers.
Liverpool vs. Chelsea – Liverpool to Win (2.00)
Yes, Liverpool has hit an iffy spell. But let’s not forget just how good Klopp’s men have been this term. They have only lost three of their 36 league games this season and have blown away pretty much every team in their path. With that in mind, odds of 2.00 for the home win seem extremely generous to me.
Chelsea (3.50) may have recorded a number of impressive results since the restart, but it is no secret that the Blues have been very inconsistent throughout 2019/20. The mammoth 30-point gulf between these two sides suggests that Liverpool should win this game comfortably.
