Early NBA 2021 Championship Betting Odds Analyzed

The NBA 2020 season just finished and we don’t know when the next campaign will start yet. The early signs are that it should begin in January 2021, but it could be later according to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.

That’s not a problem for most betting sites that have already released their early NBA 2021 Finals odds. You can find them all in this post, alongside my analysis of which prices look too low and which are too high.

Early Odds for the 2021 NBA Finals

The NBA odds above are available at BetOnline, one of the top betting sites for the league. As you can see, the LA teams are leading the way and that was the case last year too. I don’t think anyone is too shocked, but let’s move on to my analysis to see which prices are too low and which are too high.

Who’s Odds Are Too High

I believe that the early NBA 2021 Finals odds for several teams are way too high and probably deserve a small wager at this point. Let’s take a look at them.

Boston Celtics

The price for the Boston Celtics to win the title currently is +1200 which looks very tempting for several reasons. First of all, this team just reached the 2020 Eastern Conference Final and put up a good fight against the Miami Heat.

That was achieved despite the relatively quiet postseason performance by one of the team’s biggest stars Kemba Walker and the young age of the other leaders Jaylon Brown and Jayson Tatum who are 23 and 22 respectively.

Both showed excellent potential and I would argue they are on the brink of becoming true superstars. All three of Boston’s main men could and should be better in 2021, so the team certainly is a huge threat in the East.

Let’s not forget that Danny Ainge is one of the better GMs in the league, so we could see smart deals that could improve the Celtics even further. All things considered, it’s a team that should be aiming at the Championship in 2021.

Miami Heat

The Miami Heat just reached the NBA Finals and took a strong Lakers team to six games despite struggling with injuries in the series. The franchise will come back next year with a similar roster and several young players that could improve dramatically.

The likes of Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro, and Kendrick Nunn have barely started their basketball careers, so they should be better next season.

I’m pretty sure that the Heat will find a way to keep Goran Dragic and they have one of the best coaches in the league in Erik Spoelstra. Make no mistake, Miami will be back in 2021 and they will be hungry for another go at the NBA title.

Denver Nuggets

One of the teams that certainly shocked the NBA last season were the Nuggets. Denver came back from 3-1 twice during the playoffs which is unheard of. The likes of Jokic and Murray are already NBA superstars and they are both extremely clutch.

The team has a young talent like Michael Porter Junior that could explore very soon too and another guy with a high ceiling in Bol Bol.

On top of that, we saw how hard the Nuggets played in the postseason. Every member of the roster was doing his best on both ends of the floor and that’s simply part of this team’s mentality right now. There’s no reason to expect anything else and Denver certainly will be strong in the upcoming NBA season.

Honorable Mentions

I believe that two other teams deserve a mention here, even if one of them looks miles behind the title. First of all, the odds for the Mavericks currently sit at +2500 and that’s the team that has the next generational talent in the league.

Players like Luka Doncic are bound to win championships, so it’s only a matter of time before he leads a franchise to the NBA Finals. It might be too early, but you never know with a guy that’s so talented.

I will probably raise some eyebrows with my next suggestion, but getting +25000 for the Spurs looks insane. That’s a team that almost made it to the playoffs in 2020 and still has one of the best coaches in the league.

Sure, the roster doesn’t have the talent to fight for the title right now, but the current price equals a probability of 0.4%. I would say that’s way too low for an organization like the Spurs.

Who’s Odds Are Too Low

After exploring the potential value bets, it’s time to look at the wagers that you should probably avoid. I believe the early NBA 2021 Finals odds for several teams are just too low.

Los Angelis Clippers

There’s little doubt that the LA Clippers have a talented roster, but 2020 exposed many problems. The lack of proper playmakers meant that the offense had to rely on a lot of isolations from guys like Kawhi, Paul George, and Lou Williams. That doesn’t work well in the playoffs, as we clearly saw this season.

On top of that, there are plenty of teams in the Western Conference that should improve. The Warriors should be back, the Nuggets should be better, and the Mavericks are certainly a threat.

I also believe that the atmosphere in the Clippers might be rotten after this year’s failure which is always a problem. Doc Rivers might be gone, but Paul George allegedly shocked his teammates with a weird speech after their elimination and the overall sensation is the franchise lacks harmony.

The talent is there and the Clippers will be dangerous, but +600 is simply too low for a team with so many issues.

Golden State Warriors

The Warriors are one of the hardest teams to evaluate right now, but I believe that people might be overestimating the team. Sure, Klay Thompson and Steph Curry will be back and the team has the number two pick in the 2020 draft.

However, both missed so much time that you can’t simply count on the same efficiency when they come back, at least not immediately. The Warriors are likely to be a solid team and they should be able to reach the playoffs comfortably, but they are not the third-best NBA franchise right now, as the odds suggest.

Brooklyn Nets

The Brooklyn Nets are another team that is supposed to make a huge jump thanks to the return of two superstar players. And yet, Kyrie Irving is no leader and Kevin Durant is coming back after the type of injury that has ruined countless careers.

There’s also a big question mark on whether Steve Nash can be a good coach and the early signs are that his two main men don’t take him too seriously. Honestly, for all of their talent, I don’t think that the Nets are among the realistic title contenders right now, so backing them at +1200 doesn’t make sense.

Final Words

There is a lot of time until the NBA regular season starts and there will be changes in the rosters before that. And yet, I believe that some of the early odds are off the mark. Do you agree with my assessment or do you think I might be wrong?

I’m always open to other opinions, so feel free to share your own observations in the comments section below.
