Clyde Edwards-Helaire Draft Prediction – Where Will the LSU Star Be Selected?
The running back position has been incredibly devalued in the NFL in recent years, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t elite talents each year.
It’s not different going into the 2020 NFL Draft, where D’Andre Swift and Jonathan Taylor figure to be the first backs selected.
Most NFL sportsbooks have the likelihood of a running back going in round one iffy at best, but this is actually an underrated class behind the top options.
LSU stud Clyde Edwards-Helaire is part of that crazy depth, as the Tigers rusher blew up in 2019 with 1,414 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns. Edwards-Helaire also ran for 6.6 yards per carry and displayed elite versatility with 55 catches as a receiver.
The point? Clyde Edwards-Helaire is a feature back talent and can be had in round two or later.
Numerous teams should be interested in plucking him off the draft board, and I’ve got three landing spots in particular that make sense. You can find my Clyde Edwards-Helaire draft projection below.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Pick 45
The Bucs let Peyton Barber walk in free agency, which is totally cool since he wasn’t very good. They do have Ronald Jones II, who actually flashed nice ability as a runner and receiver in 2019.
The problem? Jones is a bit of a problem in pass protection. It’s also unclear if he could revert to his woefully inefficient 2018 production.
Tampa Bay just lured Hall of Famers like Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski to Florida. Ensuring their running back room isn’t awful is probably something they need to consider.
Pittsburgh Steelers – Pick 49
There are a lot of Steelers fans on Twitter suggesting Pittsburgh needs to trade for Leonard Fournette.
That’s not impossible or even a bad idea, but the Steelers didn’t make the cut for Leonard Fournette trade suitors when I looked at where he could go.
If the Steelers don’t pull the trigger on a deal like that, they should probably do something. James Conner and Jaylen Samuels are good, but the latter is more of a scat-back, and Conner has shown an inability to stay healthy.
Spending a day two pick on a versatile back like Clyde Edwards-Helaire wouldn’t be a bad idea.
Los Angeles Rams – Pick 57
Lastly, we have the Rams, who banished Todd Gurley to the skies this offseason. Now they’re looking at Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown and wondering what they’ve just done.
It was probably the right call (and those dudes can play), but do they have a true feature back on their hands? That’s a big no, my friends.
Bringing in at least one more viable pair of legs should help ease the pain. Clyde Edwards-Helaire could work beautifully in a running back by committee, or he could just rise up and take over this backfield.
Which NFL Team Will Select Clyde Edwards-Helaire?
Clyde Edwards-Helaire is versatile, balanced, and explosive. He has all the tools to be a true feature back at the next level, and if NFL teams cared about running backs more, he’d be discussed at a higher rate.
Unfortunately, he’ll slide to round two at best and round three at worst. His talent should demand interest throughout the process, but I think his best landing spot is with the Rams at 57 overall.
LA has a fine running back room, but it lacks experience and star power. Clyde Edwards-Helaire gives them a grinder who can catch passes and spring big plays. He’ll make Rams fans forget about Todd Gurley in a hurry.
You can’t bet on where Clyde Edwards-Helaire will be drafted at the moment, but there are all kinds of props available. For the best sportsbooks to use for such wagers, check out our list of the best sites for betting on the NFL.
