Can Cardinals QB Kyler Murray Win NFL MVP in 2020?
The race for the 2020 NFL MVP has already started, even if it’s still unclear if/when the actual season will commence.
Lamar Jackson is ready to defend his title, while Patrick Mahomes is waiting in the wings, hoping to take back the crown that was his just two years ago.
A newcomer could be the real threat, however. Arizona Cardinals second-year dual-threat passer Kyler Murray flashed insane upside as a rookie in 2019 and may be up for taking the baton.
Both Jackson and Mahomes exploded in their second NFL seasons. Could Murray follow suit and be the perfect bet to win this year? Here are 3 reasons why Kyler Murray can win the 2020 NFL MVP.
Repeat NFL MVP Winners Aren’t Normal
One reason we can look to Kyler Murray and other viable contenders is the fact that players don’t typically win the NFL MVP in consecutive seasons.
I’ve gone on record detailing the reasons why Lamar Jackson won’t repeat as NFL MVP, and that’s a big reason why.
It’s difficult to stay healthy, get assistance from your supporting cast, have a great team year, and put up the record-broaching stats that work together to get you a league MVP.
Doing it two years in a row, well, that just doesn’t happen. It has happened, but the NFL hasn’t seen anyone win back-to-back MVP trophies since Peyton Manning in 2008/2009.
Several players have won multiple league MVPs, but the league has seen a repeat NFL MVP winner just six times in history.
Kyler Murray Has Good NFL MVP Odds
Another reason why you should consider betting on Kyler Murray to win the 2020 NFL MVP? The oddsmakers already list him as a viable option.
Murray was pretty good as a rookie in 2019, and he stands to only get better now that he has a full season behind him. The top NFL betting sites have Murray looking like a very interesting bet at +1000.
That gives him the fourth-best NFL MVP odds for 2020, which suggests he may be a real threat.
He Could Put Up Amazing Numbers
Murray was already proving his worth as a rookie last year when he led some ferocious comebacks and put up strong numbers. His final stat line included 3,722 passing yards, 24 total touchdowns, and 544 more yards on the ground.
There is exceptional playmaking ability here, both with Murray’s escapability and rushing as well as a truly special arm. Murray can do significant damage as a runner, but he’s a pure passer who completed 64% of his passes with just 12 picks in his first year on the job.
Now his weapons got better, too.
The team landed DeAndre Hopkins in a trade, which gives Murray a true go-to star at wide receiver. It makes his supporting cast deeper, too, with an aging Larry Fitzgerald asked to do less and speedsters like Christian Kirk and Andy Isabella suddenly tough to track down the field.
If Murray doesn’t win the NFL MVP, I won’t be completely shocked. I will be if he doesn’t enjoy a huge statistical jump, however.
Will Kyler Murray Win the 2020 NFL MVP?
I’ve been looking at Kyler Murray as a potential NFL MVP winner since last season ended. Arizona trading for DeAndre Hopkins this offseason only made him more appealing.
Murray’s odds have changed, though. Back when I took a look at my favorite 2020 NFL MVP sleepers, he had +2000 odds. Now he’s at +1000 just about everywhere you can bet on who will win the NFL MVP award.
That doesn’t mean he’ll win, of course. Our own Michael Wynn insists that honor will go to Patrick Mahomes.
Others think Lamar Jackson will buck the MVP trend and repeat as the champ. It’s also possible Tom Brady, Drew Brees, or even Aaron Rodgers go off despite their advanced age.
Mahomes would still be my pick, just because the +600 odds for the best player in the NFL feels like a steal.
That said, Kyler Murray put up strong stats in his first year, and he and his team are getting better. He’ll be a name to watch, and if you don’t mind a little risk, he’s certainly worth a flier bet at his +1000 price.
