Even people who don’t know much about football know about the Super Bowl ring. It’s an in-your-face symbol of the American Dream, a way to shout, “I’ve made it…what have you done?” without raising your voice.

There is nothing subtle about these rings, and even players admit that they are so huge they are hard to wear, and so they tend to be sported only on special occasions.

But there’s no denying that a Super Bowl ring is impressive, somehow more impressive than a trophy. Maybe it’s the 200-plus diamonds on each ring. Who knows?

So how much does a Super Bowl ring cost? Here’s some info on one of the most famous pieces of jewelry in the world.

The players on the winning team get Super Bowl rings, of course. But most people are surprised to know that the team that lost also gets rings. The two teams will receive rings of different styles, but all the rings are still huge and impressive.

Because the AFC conference champion and the NFC conference champion are the two teams that meet and duke it out in the Super Bowl, the team who loses the Super Bowl is still their conference champion. Thus, their ring is often called the Conference Champ Ring.

As to the members of the winning Super Bowl team, even benched and injured players can receive a ring. The NFL reportedly gives more than 100 rings to the winning team.

As noted above, the NFL awards more than 100 rings to the winning team to be handed out to the players’ roster. However, the winning team can—and does—pay for extra Super Bowl rings to be handed out amongst the staff, owners, coaches, and sometimes even the cheerleaders.

Anyone who went to high school in the United States has heard of Jostens, the jewelry designer that makes class rings for graduating seniors. Class rings are large, chunky, and seem to have as many symbols, letters, and bling as possible.

Therefore, it should come as no surprise that Jostens has also made chunky, super-blingy Super Bowl rings (that can dwarf the hand of the largest linebacker) for many of the 54 games.

Other designers have also supplied Super Bowl rings, including super-jeweler Tiffany & Co.

According to CNN, the NFL pays $5,000 per ring.

That may not sound like much at first, but when you multiply that by 100 rings, you’re at half a million dollars already. And the NFL buys more than 100 rings for the winning team; the number is around 150, in fact. So you’re looking at a cost of around $750,000 paid by the NFL, every year.

And you wonder why tickets to even regular-season games are so expensive!

Football has become increasingly popular, flashy, and certainly more expensive. Costs have spiked on everything from paying players to trying to get a ticket to a game, and so have value and costs of the Super Bowl rings.

As a hint to how the Super Bowl ring itself has evolved, CNN reports that the first Super Bowl ring had only one diamond. Currently, each ring can have more than 200 diamonds.
